Background
Xiao Wu lives near the Lake of Life under the protection of Da Ming and Er Ming. When Sun Wukong arrives seeking the hidden master beneath the lake, she is seated on Er Ming’s shoulder and immediately questions the unfamiliar monkey about his origins. Excluded from Da Ming and Er Ming’s secret discussion, she throws a tantrum until Da Ming agrees to seek permission to reveal the lake’s secrets to her. 6
Her mother, Xiao Rou, has already undergone Transformation and entered human society. Xiao Wu is eager for news of her and is curious about the outside world, making Wukong’s stories especially fascinating to her. 7
Xiao Wu joins Da Ming, Er Ming, and Cai Lin in guarding Wukong when he attempts his Hundred-Thousand-Year Heavenly Tribulation. She considers his decision to face the tribulation before Transformation dangerously reckless, but is relieved when he survives. 14 16
After Wukong becomes human, Xiao Wu helps celebrate his Transformation and stays at the Lake of Life while he stabilizes his body. She becomes especially fond of his cooking, his company, and the prospect of one day joining him in human society after her own Transformation. 17 18 20
When Xiao Rou returns to the Lake of Life, Xiao Wu introduces Wukong to her mother. She becomes jealous when Wukong’s friendly rapport with Xiao Rou risks changing their seniority dynamic, and later reacts possessively when Xiao Rou gives him attention. 41 42
