Ch. 381Hell Will
Plot points and events
- In Hell’s Sixth Layer, the Blood Demon rushes through the Gate from the Fifth Layer, only to be caught in a vast field of destructive energy.
- Er Dongsheng reveals that this is not the Destruction Demon Domain he used in the Material Plane, but the true Purgatory. The destruction obeys him, trapping the Blood Demon while allowing Er Dongsheng to approach.
- Er Dongsheng deduces that the Blood Demon is connected to Behemoth, Beelzebub, and Mephistopheles—and identifies him as the Hell Will, the hidden force that rules Hell.
- The Blood Demon admits that powerful emotions once made him manifest as three Hell Overlords: pride as Mephistopheles, envy as Beelzebub, and greed as Behemoth. He resents the being that reshaped and distributed Hell’s Authorities, leaving him unable to claim supreme rule.
- Er Dongsheng questions why the Blood Demon manipulated events instead of taking the Authorities himself. The Blood Demon counters by asking how Er Dongsheng learned to touch the Chain of Causality, suggesting it is key to claiming an Authority.
- Before Er Dongsheng can press him further, the Blood Demon breaks free with a burst of bloody light. A massive Bone Claw tears through the boundary between the Sixth and Seventh layers, and a terrifying figure emerges.
Character developments and interactions
- Er Dongsheng demonstrates mastery of the true Purgatory and calmly pieces together the Blood Demon’s identity. He prioritizes learning the truth over killing his captive, though he remains eager to test the Blood Demon’s hidden strength.
- The Blood Demon/Hell Will shifts from resistance to bitter confession, revealing his anger and history. He then turns the interrogation back on Er Dongsheng, hinting that Er’s connection to causality is unusual.
- Lilith, Alastair, and the other Overlords are stunned by the revelations. They had believed Behemoth was dead and cannot understand how the Overlords could be facets of one being.
Significant themes
- Identity and fragmentation: The Overlords may be distinct manifestations of one underlying will, shaped by Hell’s strongest emotions.
- Power, authority, and control: Hell’s Authorities are treated as forces that can be reshaped, divided, and seized.
- Resentment and thwarted ambition: The Blood Demon’s rage stems from being made powerful yet denied the sovereignty he believes he deserved.
- Uncertainty and hidden causes: Er Dongsheng’s questions about the Blood Demon’s motives—and the Blood Demon’s question about the Chain of Causality—leave the true plan unresolved.
