Ch. 481The Sovereign Reigns
Chapter Summary
- The Highland Wizards surrender: Unable to face Diabolo’s overwhelming power, Sancast and Helim give up rather than let the young apprentices die. The remaining Highland resistance is crushed, ending the Wizards’ long-standing rule over the Northern Frontier. Diabolo declares his dominion, and his name spreads throughout the region.
- Diabolo’s reign begins: The chapter identifies January 1 of the Dark Calendar as the start of his rule over the entire Northern Frontier. The former Wizard order has been replaced by a new power structure centered on the Demon God, his forces, and competing factions.
- The Wizards cautiously gather: At a celebration in the Holy City, Sancast and Helim meet with other Wizards. The group fears Diabolo, the Heavenly Demon Squad, and its leader, the Heavenly Demon King. Some Wizards resent the Heavenly Demons’ brutality and hope Nesser’s efforts will give them a chance to advance beyond their vulnerable status.
- Sancast and Helim’s political plan stalls: They had hoped to build a third faction independent of both Nesser’s Demonkin and the Heavenly Demons. But the gathered Wizards are too cautious to commit, preferring not to antagonize either side. The two leaders decide they must proceed slowly.
- Nesser confronts a Heavenly Demon: Elsewhere, Nesser—now transformed with demonic features—insists that his Demon-Human Plan will continue and claims Diabolo will support it. The Heavenly Demon opposes him, invoking the backing of Baal and the Destruction Squad. After the confrontation, Nesser wonders what the Destroyers are and what power they represent.
Character Developments and Interactions
- Sancast and Helim move from defeated leaders to wary political survivors. Sancast’s stated concern for the apprentices is mixed with his fear of death, while both men struggle with the loss of their former status.
- The Wizards are divided between resentment of their conquerors and the desire to survive or gain power. Their fear makes them reluctant to support any independent movement.
- Nesser emerges as an ambitious advocate for the Demon-Human Plan, willing to challenge the Heavenly Demons and confident that Diabolo may back him.
- The Heavenly Demons are portrayed as feared enforcers, and their faction’s threats reveal a larger power struggle extending beyond Diabolo’s Northern Frontier rule.
Significant Themes
- Conquest and the end of an era: The Highland Wizards’ surrender marks the collapse of an ancient order and the beginning of Diabolo’s rule.
- Fear, survival, and compromised motives: Sancast’s surrender and the Wizards’ political caution show how fear shapes both personal choices and collective action.
- Factional rivalry and uncertain power: The chapter sets the Demonkin, Heavenly Demons, Wizards, and the mysterious Destruction Squad against one another, suggesting that Diabolo’s victory has not ended conflict—it has changed its form.
