After Ayame gave birth to twins, Hiruzen assigned Tonbo to investigate missing intelligence teams in Amegakure and introduced him to Shimura Danzō.

• Hayama Shirakumo’s team learned that Kumogakure squads had attacked trade caravans, protected the survivors, and continued patrolling until a relief squad arrived.
• Tobitake Tonbo returned to Konoha, where he was promoted to Full Jōnin and appointed captain of the Analysis Division.
• Tonbo tested Iruka’s skills, taught him the sound-based Eight Fragrances of Fire Genjutsu, and later took over the Analysis Division while studying new techniques.

• Danzo sent Tobitake Tonbo to gather intelligence in Amegakure, where Tonbo discovered Nagato’s rain-based sensing and spent half a year undercover as Hayakawa.
• Pain ambushed Tonbo and his team as they fled, but Tonbo used decoys and genjutsu to help his companions escape and trap the Six Paths of Pain.
• The Spiral Man attacked Teksen Shiso, Murakumo, and Genkei, killing Genkei before Shiso and Murakumo held him off until Konoha reinforcements arrived.
• Tonbo returned to Konoha and reported on Amegakure, Nagato, and the Spiral Man, then reunited with his family and welcomed Naruto into their home.
