Ch. 241Scorpions
Plot points and events
- Werther’s group encounters a polar bear who can speak. He introduces himself as Ham, a member of the Snow Bear Tribe, and explains that a small device fused beneath his neck changed his throat and taught him human language.
- Werther offers to buy the device, hoping it might let Tuski speak, but Ham says it cannot be removed and would be useless as scrap.
- After Werther gives Ham Sea King meat, Ham tells him that his tribe searched for similar devices on the Third Layer. At its entrance, a swarm of Frost Scorpions killed the entire tribe; Ham alone survived.
- Ham warns that the scorpions can absorb the surrounding cold and release freezing gas. Despite the danger, Werther asks Ham to lead them to the entrance.
- They reach a towering snow mountain containing the passage to the Third Layer. The area is even colder than the surrounding frozen desert, making the journey especially dangerous for Werther and Tuski.
Character developments and interactions
- Werther shows compassion by feeding Ham, but remains focused on reaching the Third Layer and finding technology that could help Tuski speak.
- Ham shifts from wary and hungry to trusting and grateful. His account of his tribe’s destruction reveals his guilt and grief, though he agrees to guide Werther’s group despite his fears.
- Tuski is the reason Werther takes special interest in Ham’s device; his wish to speak is understood even though he does not voice it.
- Anita examines Ham with playful curiosity, repeatedly poking him. Ham tries to look intimidating, but his effort comes across as comical.
