Ch. 201Arlong Attacks
Plot points and events
- Arlong meets Marine Colonel Nezumi and buys his cooperation with chests full of treasure. Nezumi greedily accepts, agreeing to protect Arlong’s interests.
- Nezumi’s deputy, Shus, enters to report that Ye Chen has been seen in Cocoyasi Village. Discovering the bribe, Shus realizes Nezumi has betrayed his duty. Nezumi shoots him to silence him.
- At Bellemere’s home, Ye Chen says he will stay until the Marines arrive. Nami insists he must be handed over so she can collect his 50-million-Beli bounty; Ye Chen jokes that he plans to recruit her and settles down for a nap.
- While Bellemere goes to buy food, Arlong and his crew arrive in Cocoyasi Village. Arlong declares the village his and demolishes a three-story building, while his men begin rampaging through the streets.
Character developments and interactions
- Arlong shows both calculated pragmatism and open brutality: he uses wealth to secure Nezumi’s help, then terrorizes the villagers to establish control.
- Nezumi is revealed as corrupt and murderous, choosing money and self-preservation over his Marine duties and killing Shus to conceal his betrayal.
- Shus acts uprightly by trying to report Ye Chen’s sighting, but his honesty puts him in danger.
- Ye Chen remains relaxed and confident despite being under guard, while teasing Nami about joining his crew.
- Nami stays focused on the bounty and treats Ye Chen as a captive, though she and Nojiko are visibly wary of him. Bellemere leaves them to watch him, unaware that Arlong’s attack is beginning.
Significant themes
- Corruption and betrayal: Nezumi’s bribe exposes how easily authority can be bought—and how corruption endangers those who try to oppose it.
- Power through fear: Arlong combines political influence with physical violence to claim the village.
- Competing motives and loyalties: Nami’s pursuit of the bounty contrasts with Ye Chen’s playful recruitment offer, while the family’s immediate concern for safety is interrupted by the looming threat to their home.
