Ch. 81The Only Chance
Plot points and events
- Despite his severe injuries, Ye Chen saves Sandersonia from an ambush. The remaining Dragon Guards and prison guards are defeated when the slaves fight together.
- The newly freed slaves celebrate, but Ye Chen insists they must also rescue prisoners in the other three areas before the Marines arrive.
- Many refuse to risk going back and leave. Others stay with Ye Chen, including Sandersonia and Marigold, despite his worsening condition.
- Poison is spreading through Ye Chen’s wounds and turning his blood black, but he pushes on to Area A. With the Ten Dragon Guards drawn elsewhere, the group begins freeing its prisoners.
- The Marines are already mobilizing. Vice Admiral Simon approaches Area C with thirty thousand troops, and the slaves who fled Ye Chen encounter his force. He orders his men to kill them if necessary and let none escape.
Character developments and interactions
- Ye Chen shows selflessness and determination, putting the rescue of others ahead of his own survival.
- Sandersonia and Marigold worry over Ye Chen’s injuries and try to stop him from continuing, but ultimately accompany him.
- The freed slaves divide between those who choose immediate escape and those who join the effort to free the remaining prisoners. In Area A, shared suffering outweighs old resentment toward Ye Chen, once feared for killing slaves in the Beast Arena.
- Vice Admiral Simon is introduced as a ruthless threat, willing to use lethal force to contain the uprising.
Significant themes
- Freedom and solidarity: The slaves’ common desire to reclaim their humanity brings former enemies together.
- Self-sacrifice and moral choice: Ye Chen risks everything for people who may not return the favor.
- Urgency and hope: The rescue is a race against the Marines, and the group’s brief victory may be the start of a much larger danger.
