Background / History
Denolan came from a village later devastated by the curse; when he returned, he found every resident dead. He initially sought money to flee Canfor, help Fanafuna, and avenge the people he had lost. 21 31
While sheltering from Black Snow in an abandoned stone temple, Denolan searched the corpses of a cursed caravan and found two Dragonblood Rings, a parchment formula, and a bag of gold. He hid the formula and attempted to divert Tiadam’s bandits with the visible gold, but Tiadam took both rings and coerced and abused him. Fanafuna witnessed the aftermath and recognized that he had been forced into the situation. 3
The parchment proved to contain a method for refining Dragonblood Gems. Rather than surrender it to Oyana and her associates, Denolan decided to use his exclusive knowledge as leverage for wealth, protection, and independence. 6
Appearance
Denolan is a young human man with short golden hair. Tiadam notes that his hair carries a faint scent of bread and butter. 3
- Usually presents himself as a timid, plainly dressed country youth.
- Is described as a farmer’s son. 33
- Wore a Central Asian-style cap and noble clothing when attending Veil Nas’s banquet. 35
Personality
Denolan is anxious, soft-spoken, and prone to stammering, especially around violence, wealth, and powerful magic users. His fear is genuine: he considers himself an ordinary person with neither magical talent nor the means to confront the dangers surrounding Canfor. 31 39 47
Despite this, he is observant and improvisational. He concealed the Dragonblood formula from Tiadam’s gang, used gold to distract them, and later scattered more than four hundred silver coins to save Yalila from a group of thugs. 3 11
His desire for wealth and escape gradually grows into greater ambition. Tiadam’s declaration that they could become kings inspires Denolan to want kingship for himself, though his immediate priorities remain survival, Dragonblood refinement, and protecting those close to him. 29 35
Abilities & Skills
Dragonblood Gem Refinement
Denolan possesses the formula and practical knowledge needed to refine dragon blood into Dragonblood Gems—compressed solid weapons containing powerful elemental energy. 6 31
- Gathered materials including cinnabar, mercury, lizard eggs, and snakeskin. 29
- Used the formula to seek cooperation with Oyana, Eliyi, Dilanna, and Veil Nas. 22 40
- Dragonblood Gems can potentially repel an army of thousands when their stored energy is released. 31
- Refinement is among the nation’s banned alchemical arts. 31
- Cannot complete the process without dragon blood and other inaccessible materials. 29
Survival Ingenuity
Denolan survives largely through caution, deception, and quick decisions rather than combat power.
- Hid a parchment in his boot and concealed Dragonblood Rings on his person when Tiadam’s bandits approached. 3
- Used a bag of gold to redirect the bandits’ attention away from his concealed valuables. 3
- Sacrificed his holy-water earnings to distract dozens of thugs and extract Yalila from danger. 11
- Purchased an elemental-resistant warhammer and received a Mithril dagger from a goblin blacksmith, though he lacked the experience to judge their suitability for a formal banquet. 32 33
Latent Connection to Destiny
After Eliyi attacked him with divine magic, darkness emerged from Denolan’s body and identified itself as “Destiny.” Eliyi subsequently described him as the Child of Destiny. 13 29
- The nature, origin, and capabilities of the entity remain unknown.
- Denolan has not shown conscious control over Destiny’s power. 13
Magical Aptitude
Denolan has little or no demonstrated magical talent. Dilanna confined him within the Chaos Mirror to test his aptitude; he remained inside overnight, which Eliyi explains indicates extremely weak spell strength. 39
- Cannot rely on magic in confrontations with mages, witches, or demons.
- Eliyi warns him to be especially careful around powerful supernatural beings. 39
Equipment / Items
- Dragonblood Gem formula — A parchment containing the refining method; the basis of Denolan’s business ambitions and a source of danger from those who want to exploit it. 6 22
- Twin Lantern — A battered emerald-green lantern bought from Oyana; it gives off a faint green light and later draws Klauna’s interest. 22 39 47
- Elemental-resistant warhammer — A heavy weapon bought in Canfor’s Upper District. 32 33
- Mithril dagger — A free gift from the goblin blacksmith, later confiscated by Tiadam before the banquet. 32 33
Relationships
- Tiadam — Initially robbed and abused Denolan during the caravan incident. Eliyi later forces them into a Dragonblood Gem partnership; their relationship develops into mutual reliance and loyalty despite Tiadam’s threats, recklessness, and history as a bandit. 3 30 33 46 47
- Fanafuna — Travel companion and someone Denolan wants to help escape Canfor. She witnessed Tiadam’s coercion of Denolan and understood that he had not acted willingly. 3 21
- Eliyi — Rescued Denolan after finding him collapsed in an alley, then placed him under his protection while involving him in the Dragonblood Gem business. 14 31 40
- Oyana — Denolan approached her seeking cooperation, but she and her associates manipulated him into giving up the Dragonblood formula. 6 22
- Yalila — Denolan rescued her from black-market thugs at the cost of his silver coins. Their early interactions were hostile and full of mutual insults. 11 12
- Archmage Dilanna — Tested Denolan’s magical aptitude by trapping him in the Chaos Mirror, ostensibly while considering whether he could become her apprentice. 36 39
- Destiny — An unknown conscious darkness residing within Denolan’s body. 13
Story Role / Major Arcs
Canfor Survivor
Denolan enters the story as a vulnerable survivor navigating cursed Canfor during Black Snow. After Tiadam’s assault and the loss of the Dragonblood Rings, he retains the formula parchment and begins treating it as his only route to safety and prosperity. 3 6
Holy Water and the Black Market
He collects undiluted holy water after Phantom Thief Bernard’s attack, hoping to protect his village through winter. He later sells second-grade holy water for one Kralimaya Gold Coin, only to lose its silver equivalent while rescuing Yalila. 6 11
Dragonblood Venture
After Eliyi saves him, Denolan becomes dependent on Eliyi’s protection and seeks to repay him through Dragonblood refinement. Tiadam explains that the gems are forbidden weapons rather than ordinary jewelry, exposing the scale of the scheme Denolan has entered. 30 31
Partnership with Tiadam
Eliyi locks Denolan and Tiadam together to handle the Dragonblood business. Though Tiadam initially intimidates Denolan and mistrusts him over the concealed Mithril dagger, the two increasingly act as partners: traveling together, attending Veil Nas’s banquet, and supporting one another in crises. 30 33 35
Chaos Mirror and Heroic Trial
Dilanna’s Chaos Mirror test confirms Denolan’s poor magical aptitude. Nevertheless, he rejects the idea that thousands of lives should be sacrificed merely to create a Hero, openly condemning Dilanna and Eliyi’s plan to use Tiadam against Canfor’s undead alone. 39 40
Battle Against the Giant Dead
Denolan remains beside Tiadam when they confront the Giant Dead, despite believing himself too weak to contribute. He frames their bond as a business partnership, but his refusal to flee strengthens Tiadam’s resolve. 46 47
After Tiadam awakens the Holy Sword’s power and destroys the Giant Dead, Denolan survives the battle and is carried away with him by Klauna. 49
Trivia
- Denolan’s name is said to mean “beginning” in ancient times. 14
- He dreams of becoming a king after Tiadam jokingly declares that they will one day rule a land. 35
- He mistakenly interprets Eliyi’s “1v51” remark as Tiadam surviving a battle against fifty-one Forest Elves, leading him to imagine Tiadam grievously wounded before finding him exhausted for an entirely different reason. 39
