Background
Rosa awoke after more than three centuries of hibernation as an enormous serpentine being whose body no longer fit inside her castle. Her movement collapsed the structure, shook the earth, and terrified the expedition assembled to subjugate her. Her roar raised undead beneath the remaining adventurers, while her presence drained Elrina Forest into the Rotting Forest. 1
Hero Ocast ultimately slew Rosa, but her death devastated the surrounding region rather than restoring it. Poisonous blood fell over nearby villages, killing hundreds immediately and contaminating the land, water, and food; the lingering curse later manifested as Black Snow and widespread disease. 2
Ten years later, Rosa returned in a drastically weakened elderly form. She had lost her castle, wealth, influence, and most of her former strength, while former subordinate Nushashaer had allegedly betrayed her and offered much of her wealth to the Northern Old Gods. Talatala and the remaining slime monsters nevertheless renewed their loyalty, hoping Rosa would eventually recover. 7
Appearance
Rosa’s true form is a colossal blue-red scaled serpent whose winding body can fill an entire castle. In her weakened present state, she usually appears as a plump, deeply wrinkled old woman with white hair and green eyes. 1 14
- Her gigantic divine body produces earthquakes with ordinary movement. 1 7
- Her breath can release poisonous Decaying Energy that corrodes the ground. 7
- Her elderly appearance is often mistaken for that of an ordinary homeless or eccentric countrywoman. 2 14
- She is physically exhausted by travel despite her divine status and frequently relies on Leichina to carry her. 9 14
Personality
Rosa is theatrical, arrogant, and intensely attached to her titles. She repeatedly introduces herself as an ancient evil god, Lord of Decay, and the Demon King who devoured seven worlds—even when the people around her dismiss her as a delusional old woman. 2 4
Her grandiosity is undercut by her materialism and appetite. She mourns her lost magical bathtub, demands luxury and respect from impoverished villagers, and can be distracted from rage by food or cookies. 7 22 She is also shamelessly opportunistic, readily seeking shelter, money, servants, and investment for her plans. 2 21
Despite calling herself evil, Rosa does not consistently seek destruction. She hesitates to attack dragons that have not personally offended her, claims to want comfort rather than world-ending conquest, and becomes invested in rebuilding Labi Village. 7 14 22 Her concern can still take coercive forms, particularly when she exploits Leichina’s desire to become human and see his family again. 13
Abilities & Skills
Decaying Divine Power
Rosa wields yellow-green Decaying Divine Power, an ancient force associated with rot, poison, undead, and environmental corruption. 7 10
- Her roar can summon undead from beneath her enemies. 1
- Her breath produces corrosive poisonous gas. 7
- Her power can contaminate snow, soil, water, food, and living bodies. 2 8
- She can sense unusual energy within other beings, as shown when she notices an abnormal force in the dragon Bilila’s brain. 9
- Her power is currently severely depleted; she states that full recovery may take centuries. 12
Rosa Kevin’s Curse
Rosa’s lingering curse remains active even after her supposed death and has turned Elrina Forest and Canfor into plague-stricken wastelands. 2 3
- It causes Black Snow, poisonous mud, crop failure, physical tumors, decay, and eventual death. 2 4
- It rendered much of Elrina Forest incapable of sustaining life and displaced large numbers of Forest Elves. 26
- Holy water can relieve some symptoms, but supplies are inadequate and the curse is exceptionally difficult to remove. 3 13
- Pervi’s attempts to cure it with holy water, communion, divine blood, old-god magic, and priestly prayer all fail. 13
- Enchanted weapons cannot protect humans from the curse; divine purification is required. 32
Undead Transformation
Rosa can use her divine power to create special undead rather than ordinary necromantic zombies. 10
- She resurrected Leichina as a high-level zombie who retains his soul, memories, personality, and capacity for growth. 10
- Leichina can detach and reattach his body parts without dying. 10
- A zombie created through her depleted power must remain within roughly fifteen feet of Rosa or lose consciousness. 10
- Rosa cannot yet restore all of Labi Village’s dead; she needs more recovered divine power before attempting such a feat. 12
Divine Durability and Appetite
Rosa can consume cursed food without purification or apparent illness, including an entire pot of contaminated potato porridge. 2
- She survived being thrown from Barrier Mountain by Bilila, though she was left humiliated, muddy, and hungry. 9
- After three days of eating contaminated potatoes and corn in an inn storeroom, she reports that some of her divine power has returned. 17
- Her physical condition remains poor enough that ordinary climbing and long-distance walking exhaust her. 9 14
Relationships
- Ocast — Hero who led the expedition that supposedly killed Rosa ten years before the present story; his victory left Rosa’s curse behind across Elrina Forest and nearby settlements. 1 2
- Emonled — Demon servant who acted as Rosa’s informant during the punitive expedition; he remained calm and sardonic even while facing the heroes. 1
- Talatala — Loyal slime servant and descendant of Tatapila, King of Mud. Talatala encourages Rosa’s restoration, manages the slime monsters’ loyalty, and helps conceal troubling truths from Leichina. 7 50
- Leichina — Rosa’s unwilling zombie servant. Their relationship is built on constant insults, physical comedy, and forced proximity, but they travel together and gradually develop familiarity. 10 14
- Denolan — An increasingly affectionate acquaintance who treats Rosa like a troublesome grandmother; he calms her with cookies and learns of her plan to rebuild Labi Village. 22
- Eliyi — A calculating negotiator who calls Rosa “Little Auntie,” borrows Leichina from her, and later agrees to provide resources and people for Labi Village’s reconstruction. 17 33
- Nushashaer — Former subordinate who allegedly betrayed Rosa after her defeat and transferred her wealth to the Northern Old Gods. 7
- Li Laar and Mimilar — Common Dragon parents whose family occupies treasure Rosa considers her own. Their youngest son Bilila humiliates Rosa and throws her from Barrier Mountain. 9
Story Role / Major Arcs
Punitive Expedition
Rosa serves as the overwhelming target of Ocast’s expedition. Her awakening transforms Elrina Forest into a battlefield, raises undead against the heroes, and forces multiple defenders to sacrifice themselves so Ocast can confront her. 1
Return as the “Old Hag”
After being presumed dead for ten years, Rosa reappears at Leichina and Fanafuna’s ruined inn. Her immunity to cursed food supports her claim that she is the legendary Demon King, although her hunger, poverty, and behavior make her seem more absurd than terrifying. 2 4
Failed Dragon Claim
Encouraged by Talatala, Rosa attempts to reclaim treasure from five Common Dragons north of Elrina Forest. Her confrontation ends in humiliation when Bilila verbally overwhelms her and flicks her off the mountain. 7 9
Leichina’s Resurrection
After finding Labi Village destroyed, Rosa resurrects Leichina as a soul-bearing zombie and declares him her servant. The transformation binds him to her through a fifteen-foot consciousness limit, establishing their hostile partnership. 10
Rebuilding Labi Village
Provoked by Leichina’s skepticism, Rosa adopts rebuilding Labi Village as a challenge worthy of an Evil God. She later seeks funding, labor, political allies, and people to relocate there, treating reconstruction as both a personal project and the restoration of her Demon King reputation. 12 21 33
Return of the Demon King’s Influence
As Rosa’s power slowly recovers, her presence becomes more consequential across Canfor. Her curse continues to shape the city’s politics, religion, refugee crisis, and supernatural conflicts, while her surviving servants and growing forces suggest the beginning of a renewed Demon King faction. 17 23 50
Trivia
- Rosa describes “Evil God” as her race and “Demon King” as her profession. 12
- She bought her former castle from Prince Dracula for 120,000 gold coins, chiefly mourning the loss of its magical massage bathtub. 7
- Rosa considers herself civilized and initially objects to attacking dragons who have not directly provoked her. 7
- She sold Oyana a Twin Lantern as a “divine artifact,” but it later proved useless. 21
- Her hunger is powerful enough to override threats, humiliation, and her own declarations of divine dignity. 2 9 22
