Background / History

Previous Life and Rebirth

Avilan was the leader of the Despair Fortress Guild in the virtual game Myth. After the guild’s destruction, he swallowed a full bottle of sleeping pills, intending to spend his final moments inside the game. Instead, he awakened in the ruined guild hall, where Despair Fortress and its NPCs had become real. 2

Arthur, the guild’s level-100 guardian NPC and chief steward, was the only NPC to survive the guild’s fall. Avilan initially struggled to accept that Arthur could think, speak, and reason independently. 2

Defense of Despair Fortress

When adventurers invaded the fortress, Avilan ordered Arthur to raise the alert level to maximum and allowed the intruders to enter a prepared trap. Arthur’s skeleton army slaughtered most of the force, while Avilan discovered an unsettling excitement at the sight of blood. 3

After seizing Agonsi’s Silver Badge, Avilan identified it as proof of membership in the Radiant Knights, Despair Fortress’s longtime enemy guild. The discovery led him to suspect that other Myth players—or people from his former world—had also crossed into this world. 4 5

He cruelly forced Eddie and Agonsi to fight for survival, then later resurrected Allen, Lippy, and Agonsi with Minor Radiant Resurrection. Their revival confirmed that Myth’s equipment and magical laws still functioned in reality. 4 6

Rebuilding a Demon Fortress

Recognizing Despair Fortress’s lack of manpower, resources, and intelligence, Avilan began using corpses and Demonic Beasts as blood sacrifices to summon Horned Demons. He assigned them to salvage resources, reinforce the forest, and rebuild the fortress. 5 10

He resurrected Admiral Zhou Yu and entrusted her with restoring the Gold Pool and infiltrating neighboring powers. Under Zhou Yu’s administration, Despair Fortress shifted from simple survival toward economic recovery, intelligence gathering, and territorial expansion. 8

After the South District was partially restored, Avilan formally declared his goal of making Despair Fortress an eternal legend and spreading the name “Demon King Avilan” across the world. 13

The Identity of “Aslan”

To move among humans without revealing his true nature, Avilan adopted white mage robes and the identity of the light-element mage “Aslan.” His demonic tail could not be removed, however, because it regulates his demonic essence; losing it would reduce his strength by at least half. 7

As Aslan, he rescued Wellington and Anxi from Blood Church knights, then used the incident to establish goodwill with Chika Village. He later accepted the siblings as followers after discovering Anxi’s exceptional light-element aptitude. 21 22 29

Avilan also met Cameron, the War Readiness Commander of Vought Province, while concealing his identity. Their discussion gave Avilan crucial intelligence about local power limits: most humans cannot exceed Level 50 without a special class and divine baptism. 27 28

Commerce, Expansion, and Rule

Avilan turned Despair Fortress’s surplus food, forging capacity, and standardized equipment into commercial leverage. He supplied Essin City with weapons, armor, and grain while using the trade network to expand his influence without exposing the fortress’s demonic origins. 31 34 36

He and Zhou Yu planned satellite settlements around Despair Fortress, including Chika Village as an eastern trial settlement. He also ordered the construction of a southern settlement near the ocean to monitor the dangerous waters and Sea Folk. 33 48

When Allen and his companions fled Despair Fortress to see their families, Avilan spared them and ordered Moning Village relocated to Chika Village. He treated mercy, fear, and relocation as tools to secure both loyalty and manpower. 49

Appearance

Avilan usually possesses an ordinary Eastern human appearance, with a trace of weariness in his eyes, short black hair, and a black rune between his brows. The rune seals his true demonic body. 8 49

  • Often wears white mage robes with gold trim and a silver cross to present himself as a holy light-element mage. 7
  • Has a living demonic tail that reacts to his emotions; he normally coils and fastens it around his waist. 7
  • Wears simple white formal clothing when acting openly as the lord of Despair Fortress. 49
  • Uses hoods, masks, and false identities to conceal his appearance and nature from outsiders. 8 27

Personality

Avilan began as a despairing man who viewed death as easier than life. After arriving in the new world, he became increasingly drawn to violence and bloodshed, which he attributes in part to the instincts of his demon body. He remains aware of this change and believes those instincts should be controlled rather than accepted as his true self. 2 5 16

As a ruler, Avilan is pragmatic, calculating, and highly adaptable. He evaluates people, resources, military power, and political conditions in terms of how they can strengthen Despair Fortress. He is willing to use intimidation, mass killing, slavery, coercion, and psychological manipulation when he considers them useful. 15 31 39

Despite his cruelty, Avilan retains attachments that complicate his self-image. He remembers his former friends with loneliness, values Shen Jiecōng’s dream of restoring Despair Fortress, and shows unusual patience and affection toward Anxi and Wellington. 7 9 49

He is also uncomfortable with the godlike worship demanded by Despair Fortress’s hierarchy. Although he maintains a severe public image as a sovereign, he privately finds the rigid ceremonies and constant kneeling exhausting. 6 14

Abilities & Skills

Demon Lord Physiology

Avilan’s hidden-class Demon Lord body grants him overwhelming physical strength, high magical power, immense spiritual pressure, and powerful resistances.

  • Denting a throne made of rare materials with a single punch despite hurting his own hand. 2
  • Forcing surviving adventurers to the ground through spiritual pressure alone. 4
  • Defeating Adahua, a close-range swordsman, with a single punch despite appearing to be a mage. 26
  • Withstanding the Venomous Giant Snake’s corrosive venom with almost no effect. 10
  • Possesses a demonic tail essential to balancing his demonic essence; removing it would cut his strength by at least half. 7

Light and Modified Magic

Although his primary class is warrior-based, Avilan can wield high-level light magic through his equipment and accumulated attributes. He also modifies spells by combining elemental principles.

  • Wind Blade — His highest-level known spell at the time of the Blood Church attack; it instantly killed a Third-Tier Great Swordsman. 21
  • Radiant Bullet — A compressed Light Bullet accelerated with wind magic for greater speed and penetration. 21
  • Radiant Bullet, Rapid Fire — Used to slaughter or mutilate fleeing Blood Church knights; repeated use raised the skill to Level 2. 26
  • Dragon Thunder — A Level 40 lightning spell that forms a thunder dragon; it can be countered by a skilled melee fighter. 25
  • Flame Shield — Protected Wellington and Anxi from a black-armored knight’s killing blow. 21
  • Light Threads — Bound the Venomous Giant Snake before Avilan killed it with his staff. 10

Demon Summoning

Avilan can open the Demon Realm Gate and create demons through sacrifice.

  • Blood sacrifices create permanent, conscious demons; unsacrificed summons last only three days and possess little independent thought. 10
  • He may summon demons only three times per day. 10
  • The strength of a summoned demon depends on the strength of the sacrificed creature. 10
  • Sacrificed more than five hundred catties of Venomous Giant Snake flesh and blood to summon three Horned Demons. 10
  • Used battlefield corpses to summon more than a dozen Horned Demon Commanders, over three hundred Horned Demons, and the Level 35 Horned Demon Lord Aranda. 28

Light Spirit Summoning

Avilan can create Light Spirit Swordsmen from corpses.

  • A Light Spirit Swordsman is approximately Level 35, with high offense and extreme speed but low defense. 22
  • Light Spirit Swordsmen are vulnerable to dark magic. 22
  • Their summoning contracts enforce absolute obedience, even if ordered to die. 22
  • Avilan named two swordsmen Light Wolf and Light Tiger, raising them to the fourth tier and assigning them to guard Wellington and Anxi. 29

Resurrection

Through the Ring of Radiant Protection, Avilan can use Minor Radiant Resurrection to restore the dead.

  • The spell can be used three times per day. 6
  • Each resurrected target loses ten levels. 6
  • Avilan revived Allen, Lippy, and Agonsi to test whether Myth’s game systems still applied in reality. 6

Naming and Aptitude Assessment

Avilan can bestow names that trigger magical evolution and can assess growth potential with an Aptitude Crystal.

  • Naming Mole Xiu caused the Ratkin’s body to evolve while continuously consuming Avilan’s mana. 12
  • The Aptitude Crystal identifies elemental affinity, physical and magical aptitude, and growth potential. 29
  • He identified Anxi as a light-element talent with 0.98 growth and exceptional magical aptitude. 29
  • He implanted Energy Seeds into Wellington and Anxi to accelerate their early cultivation. 36

Combat Knowledge

Avilan’s experience as a former Myth player gives him broad understanding of melee classes, magical systems, equipment, and combat techniques.

  • His discussion of melee combat impressed Cameron, a Level 49 Great Swordsman. 28
  • Demonstrated the Level 30 sword skill Triple Strike, cutting a boulder into four pieces. 33
  • Developed magical technology based on Shadow Bullet penetration, contributing to the creation of specialized Rifle Mages. 46

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Light Spear Staff — Level-100, Gold-quality staff used while posing as a light mage. 7
  • Ring of Radiant Protection — Level-80 Legendary ring containing Minor Radiant Resurrection. 6
  • White mage robes — Holy-looking robes used to disguise Avilan’s demonic identity. 7
  • Infinite Backpacks — Carries multiple storage backpacks, each with a maximum capacity of 1,000 kilograms. 22
  • Aptitude Crystal — Crystal ball used to measure attributes and growth potential. 28 29
  • Low-grade recovery potions — Disposable healing items capable of restoring wounds, health, and stamina. 22

Relationships

  • Arthur — Avilan’s chief steward, former guild guardian NPC, and utterly loyal Death Knight enforcer. Avilan relies on Arthur’s management knowledge but remains wary of the fortress’s ingrained ideology. 2 6 31
  • Zhou Yu — Resurrected admiral, principal strategist, and administrator of Despair Fortress. Avilan trusts her with economic recovery, infiltration, logistics, and expansion planning. 8 33 48
  • Mi Yue — Resurrected Blood Queen and commander whose bloodkin abilities support fortress defense, surveillance, and nighttime warfare. 14 36
  • Aranda — Level 35 Horned Demon Lord summoned by Avilan and placed in command of the Horned Demon Legion. 28
  • Wellington and Anxi — Rescued siblings whom Avilan accepts as followers and students. His affection for them preserves some of his remaining sympathy toward humans. 21 29 49
  • Allen, Eddie, Agonsi, and Lippy — Adventurers first tortured and imprisoned by Avilan, then resurrected and incorporated into Despair Fortress’s labor and administration. 4 6 13
  • Cameron — War Readiness Commander whom Avilan meets as “Aslan.” Their conversations provide Avilan with valuable intelligence about human power systems. 27 28
  • Shen Jiecōng — Avilan’s former college roommate and the designer of Despair Fortress. Avilan vows to restore the fortress partly to fulfill Shen’s dream. 6 7 9
