Background / History

Tsunade is a descendant of the First Hokage, Senju Hashirama. The deaths of her younger brother Nawaki and her lover Dan, the rejection of her proposal to assign medical ninja to squads during the Second Great Ninja War, and her resulting hemophobia left her weary of war and disillusioned with Konoha’s leadership. She also came to resent Sarutobi Hiruzen, her former teacher. 11 12

Asuma first encounters her drunk in a tavern. His deliberate attempt to connect with her through the losses of Konoha’s fallen ninja brings out her guarded sympathy and leads her to take him home. 11

Asuma encourages Tsunade to pursue the healing potential of her grandfather while finding a way to apply it to others. Their discussion turns to the Yin Seal, chakra storage, and the need for a medical technique capable of regenerating organs. 12

After Asuma keeps a promise made while drunk, Tsunade begins teaching him fūinjutsu and medical ninjutsu. She provides her extensive collection of texts, later teaches him the Healing Technique, Mystical Palm Technique, and the completed Hundred Healings Technique. 19 20 27 35
