Background / History

Academy Years and Sakumo’s Survival

Kakashi joins Asuma’s childhood training group alongside Kurenai, Obito, and Guy. He is among the few children who continue exercising after the others leave to play. Sakumo has taught him swordsmanship since childhood, though Asuma’s newly acquired sword skills surprise him during an Academy spar 4 5 6.

Asuma’s intervention saves Sakumo’s life and changes Kakashi’s development. With his father still alive, Kakashi’s personality is less extreme than Asuma expected. He later joins Minato’s team with Obito and Rin 6 13.

Chidori and Rin’s Apparent Death

Asuma helps Kakashi develop Chidori by discussing its principles, testing it against a Shadow Clone, and identifying its visual limitations. Sakumo contributes Lightning Chakra control techniques, while Minato explains the physical and perceptual demands of high-speed attacks. Asuma later guides Kakashi through a low-intensity Lightning Chakra exercise intended to improve dynamic vision 15 37 75.

During a Mist ninja encirclement, Kakashi tries to protect Rin despite nearly depleted chakra. Rin deliberately runs into his Chidori to prevent the Three-Tails implanted inside her from being released in Konoha. The strike also breaks the cursed seal on her heart. Asuma rescues both of them, and Rin’s survival is concealed while Konoha investigates Madara’s manipulation of Obito 115 116.

Rin subsequently enters the Hokage’s Anbu under the codename Sen. Asuma entrusts her continued training to Kakashi, who discovers that her physical strength has become formidable enough to make their spars difficult 122.

Special Training and Teaching

Kakashi attends Asuma’s Jōnin Special Training Class and helps lead its afternoon reaction exercises. In the Forest of Death assessment, he overcomes traps and Anbu opponents before defeating Rin without using his full strength. Minato assigns him to protect Kushina during her pregnancy, when her jinchūriki seal is vulnerable. Kakashi completes the assignment on October 9, Konoha Year 48 143 156.

The Daimyo’s Mansion

Minato selects Kakashi to replace Sakumo at the Fire Daimyo’s Mansion. The mission is publicly framed as protection against Akatsuki, but its political purpose is to place the daimyo’s armed forces under Konoha’s influence. As a child, he persists with training after most classmates stop; as an adult, he retains a dry, cutting manner even when speaking to the much more powerful Asuma. He openly rejects the prospect of becoming Fifth Hokage because he does not want Minato’s exhausting workload while Asuma enjoys greater freedom 4 207.

His confidence is tempered by respect for genuine expertise. He acknowledges the gap between himself and Sakumo, and declines to teach Zhi Yin after recognizing the older man’s superior swordsmanship without chakra 44 212.
