Background / History

Qu Shan arrives in the Eastern Wilderness as an envoy sent by the Lord of the Great Wilderness to inspect the region and investigate the spread of Baleful Qi-corrupted beasts. He encounters Feng Xu while the latter is absorbing Baleful Qi from beast corpses, then assists the coalition of over a hundred tribes in finishing its extermination campaign. He is struck by the eastern tribes’ rapid growth, their named leaders, writing system, cultivation methods, and coordinated military force. 42

He visits the Wind-Fire Tribe’s Blood Pool and Vermilion Ridge, where its durable housing, sanitation, communal facilities, refined food, grain reserves, and workshops overturn his expectations of a remote tribe. Qu Shan negotiates grain-for-demon-corpse exchanges and later secures a trade for complete Dharma Artifact sets. 43 44

At Bamboo Mountain Academy, Qu Shan learns the basic thousand characters in a single day and recognizes writing as vital to preserving knowledge. In a private discussion with Feng Xu, he explains that the Human Race was dispersed to reduce internal conflict and survive the threat of the Heavenly Wolf Demon Race. He then invites Feng Xu to the Central Wilderness, warning that war and Baleful Demon activity are escalating. 45

After Feng Xu reaches the Central Wilderness, Qu Shan welcomes him personally, arranges his lodging, and repeatedly urges Lord Yunfeng to recognize Feng Xu’s value. He helps provide workers for Feng Xu’s granary and Blood Pool projects, then undergoes the Blood Pool breakthrough process himself. 49 52

Appearance

Qu Shan is a middle-aged man who initially wears simple animal-hide clothing. Despite his high cultivation, his hides are poorly stitched and less refined than the clothing worn in the Eastern Wilderness. 42

He is also blunt and politically aware. Qu Shan repeatedly calls out Feng Xu’s evasiveness, urges him to speak honestly before Yunfeng, and understands that the Central Wilderness cannot rely on personal cultivation alone to resolve its disorder. 43 50 His strongest trait is his confidence in Feng Xu: he persistently argues that Feng Xu’s talents concern the future of the Human Race and should be put to use. 46 49
