Background

Feng Sui was the chief of the tribe that became the Wind-Fire Tribe after Feng Xu created surnames and personal names for its members. Feng Xu named him for the tribe’s defining use of fire, while the collective surname “Feng” reflected the relationship between wind and flame. 3

After witnessing Feng Xu’s advances in pottery, writing, and organization, Feng Sui publicly appointed him the tribe’s wise man and ordered the tribe to follow his arrangements. He nevertheless remained responsible for the community’s security, staying behind when Feng Xu and Feng Xi departed to trade because former tribespeople might return to raid the settlement. 3 4

As the tribe expanded, Feng Sui developed practical expertise independent of Feng Xu. He improved brick firing to an eighty-percent success rate and took charge of the larger pottery kiln while Feng Xu focused on new projects. 23

Personality

Feng Sui is protective, straightforward, and strongly duty-bound. His concern for Feng Xu repeatedly conflicts with Feng Xu’s willingness to take risks, but he accepts difficult responsibilities when the tribe needs him to remain behind. 4

He is cautious about threats beyond the tribe’s current strength. Although Feng Xu viewed Wild Boar Ridge as a valuable future base, Feng Sui warned that a terrifying roar heard there sixty years earlier had once made him consider abandoning the area. 24

As the tribe prospers, Feng Sui becomes an effective and welcoming administrator. He warmly integrates newcomers, oversees work during Feng Xu’s seclusion, and readily offers Wind-Fire construction assistance to the Central Wilderness Tribe. 34 43
