• Baleful Qi is a form of turbid qi comparable to Pure Spiritual Qi in being usable as a cultivation resource, but it is vastly more dangerous for ordinary users 56 58.
• It tears apart flesh, disrupts the mind, and can force severe victims into mutation or madness 38.
• It does not naturally dissipate after infecting a host; it transfers between corpses, survivors, and living creatures, requiring cremation and quarantine to limit its spread 37.
• Once embedded deeply—especially in bone—Baleful Qi is extremely difficult to extract. The World-Cleansing White Lotus is described as the only known means of truly purifying it; other methods suppress, seal, or relocate it 38.
• It conflicts violently with Dharma power and can consume or transform mana on contact 38 54.

Corruption and Mutation

Baleful Qi changes a host’s behavior and physiology, driving it toward aggression, bloodlust, and self-destructive action.

• Corrupted Flower Jade Bees developed blood-feeding behavior and rapidly drained victims’ vital energy and blood 37.
• Tainted beasts attack despite broken limbs, grave wounds, or fatal injuries, appearing insensible to pain 40 41.
• Fierce Beasts contaminated by Baleful Qi are termed Baleful Fiends, while corrupted Demon Beasts are called Baleful Demons 59.

• During the extermination effort, he observes that the Qi appears to act more on destructive instinct than strategic thought, driving swarms blindly into traps 40.
• Later Baleful Qi encountered in a True Immortal beast core actively breaks through Feng Xu’s seals and enters his body, seeming conscious and hostile 54.

Containment and Cultivation

Nine-Turn Origin Art

The Nine-Turn Origin Art is the primary method Feng Xu uses to endure and absorb Baleful Qi.

• The art uses Baleful Qi’s destructive nature to temper the body through repeated destruction and restoration 38.
• Feng Xu merges part of his Primordial Spirit into his flesh before absorbing Qi, allowing him to remove most contamination from Kunmu and other survivors 38.
• The method is extremely dangerous and unsuitable for widespread human use; failure can destroy one’s foundation or lead to corruption 38 56.
• Feng Xu inscribes the technique onto Kunmu as a Battle Mark so she can gradually manage the Baleful Qi remaining in her bones 38.

Baleful Core

Feng Xu seals absorbed Baleful Qi in a condensed core rather than allowing it to mingle with his Dharma power.

• The core was created after direct suppression proved impossible due to the conflict between Baleful Qi and Dharma power 38.
• Refinement increases the Qi’s purity but also increases the danger of further compression and absorption 40.
• A Seven-Turn core contains pure destructive power, but this is not equivalent to mastering the Destruction Law, which requires Dao comprehension 54.

History

Vermilion Ridge Outbreak

Baleful Qi first becomes a major regional crisis when it mutates Flower Jade Bees into a vast bloodsucking swarm. The insects kill more than three hundred people at the Wind-Fire Tribe and leave hundreds wounded, forcing Feng Xu to order corpse burning and survivor isolation 37.

Feng Xu uses the Nine-Turn Origin Art to extract Baleful Qi from Kunmu, the other wounded, and the cremation site. Unable to expel the accumulated Qi, he condenses it into his first Baleful Core and reaches Late Earth Immortal during the process 38.

Poison Bee Extermination

Investigation reveals a massive bee colony stretching across a cliff more than a thousand zhang high and twenty li wide. Feng Xu identifies its relentless feeding, reproduction, and exhaustion as consequences of Baleful Qi’s control 39.

Feng Xu’s group destroys much of the swarm with smoke-and-fire pit traps, then strips the remaining bees of Baleful Qi. Most die after reverting to Flower Jade Bees, while a weakened remnant is preserved for future honey production 40.

Regional Beast Horde

After the swarm’s destruction, Baleful Qi-corrupted beasts converge on Vermilion Ridge in an organized-looking horde. More than a hundred tribes later join an encirclement campaign targeting only contaminated beasts, while Feng Xu follows the fighting to absorb residual Qi from corpses 40 42.

The campaign reveals that the contamination is not confined to the Eastern Great Wilderness. Qu Shan confirms that unusually dangerous Baleful Demons have appeared across the wilderness and are spreading rapidly 45.

Central Wilderness Conspiracy

A Mid True Immortal beast core delivered for refinement contains deliberately planted Baleful Qi, though its flesh and blood show no corruption. Feng Xu survives the trap and refines the Qi into a Seven-Turn Baleful Core, leading Yunfeng to suspect internal sabotage within the Human Race 54.

Feng Xu and Commander Zeng later discover a hidden realm containing True Immortal Baleful Beasts. The conspirators behind the site seek to capture Feng Xu alive and learn his method for controlling Baleful Qi 56.

Feng Xu marks concealed Baleful Qi nests throughout the Central Wilderness, enabling Yunfeng and Deputy Commander Chen to conduct a coordinated purge. In response, a hidden commander forcibly fuses Captain Shi with a corrupted beast, creating a Fusion Baleful Fiend that retains Shi’s speech, emotions, and suffering 57 60.
