Background
Garchomp was originally a Gible born in a cold laboratory, where it was treated as an experimental object rather than a living partner. When Heiduo found it, his immediate relief and affection gave it its first experience of warmth, forming the basis of its unusually deep attachment to him 499.
It evolved from Gabite into Garchomp after nearly half a year under Heiduo's care. The evolution dramatically increased its speed, combat ability, and capacity for flight; it soon became capable of carrying Heiduo through the air 141 144. By the Dragon King Festival, it was already one of the tournament's most feared combatants, defeating Dragonair, Kingdra, Flygon, Dragonite, and Alolan Exeggutor with overwhelming force 349 351 354 359 363.
Its Level Seven Outrage breakthrough during the festival created an unprecedented ability with severe drawbacks. Garchomp initially became frightened by Heiduo's frustration over its altered condition, but their private reconciliation deepened their bond and increased its Friendship 360 361. Continued training eventually allowed it to develop Outrage into a self-created Level Eight state and later fully master New Outrage 541 787.
Kiley later gifted Heiduo Garchompite, which Garchomp instinctively sensed and eagerly pursued. It Mega Evolved successfully on Route 16, retaining its self-control despite the transformation's immense power 583 584.
Appearance
Garchomp is an enormous, powerfully built bipedal dragon with crimson coloration, golden vertical pupils, broad fin-blades, and a predatory aura. It is notably larger and more muscular than Cynthia's female Garchomp, with a notch in its dorsal fin 187.
- Its fin-blades can be used as claws, shields, and cutting weapons 359 363.
- Its Lorenzini Ampullae are highly developed sensory organs that detect pheromones and allow it to notice targets before Heiduo can 583.
- It can tuck in its arms and fins, propel itself with airflow, and fly like a jet 141 678.
- Mega Evolution gives it crimson scythe-like arm blades, additional chest teeth, knee blades, a longer bladed tail, and a sharper jawline 584.
Personality
Garchomp is intensely loyal to Heiduo and views him as its most important companion. It is emotionally sensitive to his approval, becoming jealous when excluded from battles and distressed when it believes it has disappointed him 188 361.
Despite its intimidating appearance, it retains a youthful and sometimes childish temperament. It enjoys praise, becomes sulky when denied battle opportunities, and dislikes techniques it considers undignified—particularly spinning Sand Tomb tactics 188 395. It also has a competitive streak, especially toward powerful teammates and opponents.
As it matured, Garchomp became more leader-like within the team. It willingly gave younger Pokémon chances to battle, praised Swampert's performance, and patiently helped Charmander train 284 361. It is normally fair-minded and does not bully weaker companions, though it can become frighteningly aggressive when defending Heiduo or facing hostile opponents 361 363.
Abilities & Skills
Rough Skin
Garchomp's original Ability damages opponents that strike it with forceful physical contact.
- Krookodile injured its jaws after using Crunch on Garchomp 287.
- Rough Skin contributed to Krookodile's defeat after it attacked Garchomp with Outrage 500.
- The Ability makes direct close-range exchanges dangerous even for physically powerful opponents 287.
Sand Force
After Mega Evolving, Garchomp's Rough Skin changed into Sand Force, allowing it to enhance Ground-, Rock-, and Steel-type attacks under Sandstorm-like conditions 584.
- It can create Pseudo-Sandstorm conditions through its own sand and terrain manipulation 637.
- It manipulates sand, rocks, soil, and lava as shields, restraints, and projectiles 637 638.
- It used Sand Force and Earthquake to imprison Magcargo inside an airtight stone sphere before destroying it with Dragon Claw 638.
New Outrage
New Outrage is Garchomp's unique evolved form of Outrage. It developed beyond the normal move's restrictions and eventually became one of its strongest techniques 541 787.
- Raises Attack, Defense, endurance, and Dragon-type move activation speed 541.
- Produces Fake Intimidate, a controllable aura capable of frightening opponents and weak-willed Trainers 362 733.
- Produces Fake Mind's Eye, a perception effect that forces opponents into heightened focus; Heiduo considers it less useful against experienced Pokémon 787.
- At maximum power, its Dragon-type energy becomes a thin oil-like sheen that greatly reinforces both offense and defense 787.
- Earlier forms caused confusion, weakness, blurred vision, nearsightedness, and impaired color recognition after use 360 361.
- Returning to a Poké Ball can remove the Confusion, but not the temporary physical weakness 395.
Dragon-Type Combat
Garchomp specializes in direct, high-impact Dragon-type attacks, particularly Dragon Claw, Dragon Rush, and Outrage.
- Dragon Claw — Can be performed with its fin-blades rather than only its hand claws; it uses the technique for rapid, lethal close-range cuts 363.
- Dragon Rush — A devastating charging technique that creates intense pressure, though its lengthy preparation time was initially a major weakness 354. Outrage later accelerated its activation 362.
- Dragon Blade — A Mega Garchomp technique using sand-enhanced Dragon-type cutting power 637.
- Ranged Dragon Claw — Mega Garchomp developed a blue-green energy blade capable of slicing through multiple boulders at range 585.
- Dragon Flame enchantment — Its Level Eight Outrage State accelerated Dragon-type attacks and inflicted burn damage with successful hits 541.
Ground-Type Combat
Garchomp's Ground-type techniques evolved from straightforward attacks into major battlefield-control tools.
- Earthquake — Level Seven Earthquake concentrates its greatest force within ten meters 330. At Level Eight, it can devastate the terrain on a massive scale 645.
- Sand Tomb — Can trap targets, disrupt movement, block attacks, and form rotating defensive barriers 188 366.
- Prison Sand Tomb — A proposed Mega Garchomp application intended to bind a single target, impair its vision and judgment, and deal continuous damage 585.
- Sandstorm tornado — Garchomp can generate a tornado-like Sand Tomb exceeding twenty meters in height to control an opponent's movement 395.
- Dig / Spiral Drill — Can pursue targets underground and emerge in a spinning drill-like attack 287 500.
- Stone Edge — At Level Eight, can instantly generate numerous stone spikes around itself in close combat 645.
Mobility and Senses
Garchomp combines speed, aerial maneuverability, underground movement, and unusually sharp senses.
- Can fly fast enough to significantly shorten travel between Blackthorn City and Mahogany Town 389.
- Can swim rapidly while using Outrage and still obey simple commands 350.
- Can glide and maneuver in midair with fighter-jet-like movement 542.
- Its Lorenzini Ampullae can identify pheromones and detect approaching individuals before Heiduo notices them 583.
- Its Outrage-derived Bloody Vision allowed it to perceive minute enemy movement despite altered color vision 359.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Garchompite — Gifted by Kiley; enables Mega Evolution when paired with Heiduo's Key Stone 583 584.
- Mega Ring — Worn at the base of one Lorenzini Ampulla because its neck vents prevented use of a collar-style accessory 584.
- Earth Plate — Enhances its Ground-type moves; attaching it to Garchomp's forehead greatly increased the power of Earth Power 861.
- Persim Berry — Used by Heiduo to cure the Confusion caused by Outrage 351 359.
- Gemstone collection — Garchomp collects genuine gemstones and possesses two Evolution Stones 253.
Relationships
- Heiduo — Trainer and inseparable partner. Garchomp's attachment began when Heiduo rescued it from laboratory life; it is described as the Pokémon that loves him most 499.
- Cynthia's Garchomp — Female mate and romantic interest. Garchomp became visibly nervous and excited before meeting her, and the two developed an immediate mutual attraction 751 752.
- Cynthia — Heiduo's close associate and the Trainer of Garchomp's mate; she helped Heiduo understand Outrage's unusual evolution 361.
- Scizor — Rival, sparring partner, and frequent test opponent. Scizor willingly helped evaluate New Outrage's improved offensive and defensive effects 787.
- Electivire — Competitive teammate. Electivire envies Garchomp's Mega Evolution and once mocked it for wearing the Earth Plate, provoking a destructive chase 585 861.
- Swampert — Junior teammate whom Garchomp respects for its toughness and fighting style 284.
- Charmander / Golden Sparkle — Younger teammate whom Garchomp patiently assists with training 361.
- Kiley — Friend of Heiduo who gave Garchompite to Garchomp's team; Garchomp excitedly tackled him upon sensing the stone 583.
Major Arcs
Evolution and early recognition
After evolving from Gabite, Garchomp immediately became one of Heiduo's most conspicuous Pokémon. Its speed, flight, and terrifying presence astonished Gym Leader Chuck and other Trainers 141 144. Its rarity and resemblance to Cynthia's ace caused opponents to fear it before battle 187 287.
Dragon King Festival
Garchomp dominated the Dragon King Festival through a series of victories over Dragonair, Kingdra, Flygon, Dragonite, and Alolan Exeggutor 349 351 354 359 363. During the event, its Outrage reached Level Seven and produced the unique Bloody Vision state 358 359. Its battle against Clair's Dragonair exposed its weakness in chaining moves and its relative lack of experience compared with veteran Dragon-type partners 365 366.
Outrage development
Heiduo initially regarded New Outrage as unreliable because its benefits were limited compared with its severe aftereffects 362 395. Garchomp continued training and eventually transformed it into a self-developed Level Eight Outrage State, enabling faster Dragon-type attacks and Dragon Flame effects 541. By the time New Outrage was maxed, it had become a major source of physical strength, defense, intimidation, and Dragon-type enhancement 787.
Mega Evolution
Kiley's gift of Garchompite allowed Garchomp to Mega Evolve safely and without the instability Heiduo feared 583 584. Mega Garchomp traded a small amount of speed for enormous physical power, new ranged Dragon Claw applications, and sophisticated Sand Tomb control 585. Its Sand Force manipulation later allowed it to turn entire battlefields into weapons against opponents such as Magcargo 637 638.
Relationship with Cynthia's Garchomp
After reaching sexual maturity, Garchomp became infatuated with Cynthia's female Garchomp. Its usual confidence gave way to nervous romantic behavior, prompting Heiduo to treat it with embarrassed, fatherly concern 751 752. Their relationship continued despite Garchomp's longing for its mate during later travels 766.
Trivia
- Garchomp was still under two years old when it received Garchompite, yet already possessed the presence of an apex predator 583.
- At three years old, it could score above eighty-five on mathematics tests roughly equivalent to ninth-grade level 657.
- It prefers visibly forceful attacks such as Dragon Claw, Dragon Rush, and Outrage over indirect control moves such as Sand Tomb 395.
- It flies far higher than normal Garchomp after becoming accustomed to Heiduo's training methods, sometimes reaching altitudes other Garchomp avoid 894.
