Background / History

The Ashmark Lineage assembled dragon eggs through requests, trade, and coercion, then magically incubated them together in Ochre Valley. The resulting cohort included Heavy-Metal Dragons such as Iron, Chrome, Cobalt, Tungsten, and Nickel Dragons, alongside mixed-blood and Lesser Dragons. 2

Valyria Burningheart, known to the cohort as the Nurturer, assumed responsibility for their feeding, education, discipline, and training. Upon their hatching, she established that every hatchling belonged to the Ashmark Lineage regardless of scale color or bloodline, and that lineage-provided food could not be fought over. 1

Their earliest year was unusually secure: the Lineage supplied four meals a day, protected Ochre Valley from outside threats, and lost no hatchling to death or permanent injury. 2 23 This protection gradually gave way to harsher competition, including ore-chewing drills, rank-based combat, and the Feeding-Seizure Period, during which hatchlings had to secure food by force. 4 36 40

Hatchling Dragons vary dramatically in size, coloration, and anatomy according to bloodline. They hatch at roughly house-cat size, with disproportionately large heads, round bellies, short limbs, and undeveloped wings; by their first Dragonbirth Day, even smaller breeds measure around one and a half meters, while Iron and Cobalt Dragons exceed two meters. 1 23
