"All of my drugs have been used up. I didn't keep even a little." Lawyer Jin looked somewhat regretful as well.
Leaving aside whether murder was illegal, they simply had no poison on hand right now, only sleeping pills. The plan was simple. They did not need to send many people out to confront Brother Hao; they only needed one person to find a way to make Brother Hao take the drug and seize his phone. Everyone else would hide in the secret room, just in case.
Second-generation Zhao and Basketball Qiao, both of whom had already died once, volunteered in turn.
Zhen Liu vetoed them one by one. "I have a better choice." He had an alter personality who was a serial killer, after all. If he did not use him now, when would he?
It was still easy to lure Brother Hao out.
They did not need to make a phone call, nor did they need to write any little notes.
According to Second-generation Zhao, Brother Hao would definitely come in person. Only by watching them burn alive with his own eyes would he feel at ease. Although Zhen Liu did not know why Second-generation Zhao was so certain, his instincts still made him trust Second-generation Zhao's judgment.
Just as Second-generation Zhao had said, after they refused to hand over a single person, Brother Hao appeared openly with his men.
Brother Hao wore custom-made clothes and stepped out of a low-key black luxury car. He seemed to have worked hard to become more civilized, yet he still could not conceal the banditry in his soul.
In Lucien's words, he reeked of blood. A soul like that was best made into a medium-rare steak. There was no need to trim the edges; just sprinkle it with coarse salt and let it touch the grill for a moment, and it would sizzle with fat. Only the surface would change color, while the inside would still be raw flesh when cut open. Tender and juicy, but rarely appreciated.
The lackeys behind Brother Hao were broad-shouldered and thick-waisted, with fleshy faces, full-arm tattoos, and little watches, as though terrified that others might not know what they did.
At that moment, no one else remained in the villa's living room. Only Zhen Liu sat calmly on the sofa and gave Brother Hao a faint smile. "Long time no see, old classmate."
The humidifier beside the coffee table was busily billowing mist, making Zhen Liu look like an immortal ascending on the spot, detached from the world and ethereal.
Brother Hao recognized Doctor Zhen almost at a glance. After all, his appearance had not changed much since their school days. Time seemed especially kind to beautiful people. Back when they were in school, Brother Hao had first noticed Zhen Liu in the hallway because his looks were simply too outstanding, like a crane among chickens.
But young Brother Hao had immediately thought, if Doctor Zhen was the crane, then what were people like them? Chickens?
An uncontrollable malice suddenly rose in Brother Hao's heart. He viciously thought to himself, What was so special about this pretty boy? He wanted to see whether Doctor Zhen could still maintain that air of superiority when he was on his knees, begging them pathetically.
In the end, it all came down to one word: jealousy.
The face of a jealous person was always ugly. Brother Hao's inexplicable and unfulfilled hostility toward Doctor Zhen made his already unremarkable appearance even more loathsome. After all these years, Brother Hao's ugly face had gained a centipede-like scar that nearly crawled across half his face, making him look even more vicious.
Especially when compared to the serene, fair, clean-looking Doctor Zhen, Brother Hao seemed like absolute nothing. His old disgust surged up again, even stronger than before.
Brother Hao also wanted to imitate Doctor Zhen's cool expression, three parts aloofness and four parts mockery, but he merely made a fool of himself.
That completely infuriated him from humiliation.
Basketball Qiao, hiding in the secret room, pressed himself nervously against the door, unwilling to miss even the slightest sound. He worried for Zhen Liu, wondering whether his slight frame could last even one or two exchanges against Brother Hao.
Only then did Basketball Qiao remember to ask: how was Zhen Liu supposed to awaken his main personality? Was that even a setting in the game?
Before Basketball Qiao could ask his brother, Zhen Liu's entire aura changed in an instant. It was hard to say exactly how, but Basketball Qiao's animal instincts made him subconsciously glance at Professor Lu. Right, the two of them had become similar. Both gave him the casual air of a large beast eyeing its dinner, the confidence of someone at the top who had everything under control.
Clearly, Zhen Liu looked thinner and smaller than Brother Hao, and he was alone, yet he gave off the dangerous feeling of someone who licked blood from a blade.
Even Brother Hao unconsciously slowed his step. He did not immediately make a move, only asking, "Have you found the killer?"
"That depends on what kind of killer you're looking for." Zhen Liu replied unhurriedly, matching Brother Hao in presence and even faintly showing signs of overpowering him. "But no matter what kind of killer it is, I won't say anything unless you and I are alone."
The white mist in the humidifier drifted into the air with a light breeze and vanished without a trace.
Brother Hao frowned. Just as he was about to speak, his vision blurred, and the imposing air he had worked so hard to gather dwindled to one dry sentence. "You think I care?"
"Of course you don't. But do you care about your criminal evidence? If I don't check in safely later, it will appear at the police station." That was naturally a lie. Zhen Liu sat there as steady as a mountain, looking at Brother Hao with a half-smile. "Don't you find it strange? Why are only you and I here? Because everyone else has already run away."
Brother Hao was a little confused, but he remained rational. "If they could run, why didn't you?"
Zhen Liu was even calmer than Brother Hao. He countered, "I set up such a big trap to draw you out. Why would I run?"
"Oh?" Brother Hao only half believed Zhen Liu's claim, but when he thought of the second-in-command who had been inexplicably reported and taken in, he could not afford to gamble. That was how things were these days: the timid feared the bold, and the bold feared those with nothing to lose. In the end, Brother Hao could only compromise and have his men leave the living room to wait outside the villa.
The humidifier continued puffing out white vapor, making Brother Hao increasingly irritated. He sprawled onto the armchair beside Zhen Liu and deliberately picked a fight. "Why is this thing on?"
