Background

Tang Sanzang is born to Bi Yun and Yin Wenjiao after Bo Huang secretly arranges their marriage. His birth is unusual: the reincarnation of Golden Cicada possesses the Strongest Fahai System, which promises to cultivate him into the Great Majestic Heavenly Dragon within twenty years. Tang Sanzang immediately begins cultivating and later recognizes that Bo Huang is also a transmigrator. He rejects Bo Huang's invitation to join the Demon Race, insisting on Buddhism instead 204.

Bo Huang later tells Bi Yun that Tang Sanzang's spirit was produced through a Western Saint's possession method involving Golden Cicada's original spirit and another Buddhist believer, and orders Bi Yun to treat him as unrelated to the Demon Race's plans 206.

Tang Sanzang begins the pilgrimage confident in his Grand Unity Golden Immortal cultivation and Buddhist backing. Losing the Brocade Kasaya, suffering repeated deaths, and discovering that the Buddhist Sect often considers his rescue too costly gradually damage that confidence 208 217.

At the beginning of his journey, Tang Sanzang endures a starlight trap created by ten Grand Unity Golden Immortals. Bi Yun extracts him from the danger but steals his Brocade Kasaya, prompting Tang Sanzang to curse his father and suffer the 99 Heavenly Tribulation 207.

Without the kasaya, he is defeated and eaten by You Wen, whose cultivation immediately rises. This establishes Tang Sanzang as a resource sought by major factions across the Great Desolation 208 209.

Recruitment of Sun Wukong

After Golden Cicada is awakened, Tang Sanzang frees Sun Wukong from Five Elements Mountain. Their first meeting becomes a battle, with Tang Sanzang attempting to compel Wukong to join the pilgrimage by offering Buddhist combat techniques 211 212.

After Tang Sanzang's conflict with Guanyin threatens the pilgrimage, Bodhi seals his Golden Cicada true spirit and scatters his magical power into his body. From that point onward, he retains only the memories of a mortal devoted to continuing the Journey to the West 222 223.

Repeated consumption during the pilgrimage

Tang Sanzang is repeatedly captured, cooked, eaten, and revived by demons, great powers, and even Buddhist figures. His body becomes a contested cultivation resource, while the Buddhist Sect increasingly treats his revivability as justification for allowing the attacks 217 228 254 263 330.

The cycle leaves him increasingly disillusioned. By the time Sun Wukong encounters the leopard demons, Wukong notes that Tang Sanzang has already been eaten “at least sixty or eighty times” 314.

Completion of the Journey to the West
