Background / History
Ao Lie is the third son of Ao Run, the Dragon King of the West Sea. Before his involvement in the Journey to the West, Bo Huang identifies him as a talented dragon with excellent fortune who has been targeted by the Buddhist Sect. Bo Huang brings him from the West Sea to Penglai Island and accepts him as a disciple to divert this calamity. 200
Bo Huang trains Ao Lie in the Chaos Space, where one hundred years inside pass as one day outside. Ao Lie is ordered to attain at least the late stage of Grand Unity Golden Immortal within three hundred years and is taught the Thirty-Six Heavenly Dipper Great Divine Abilities, Dragon Heaven Carefree Art, and Golden Crow Battle Technique—Halberd. 200
Bo Huang also arranges Ao Lie's marriage to Golden Phoenix Fairy of Wa Huang Palace. Kong Xuan presents him with the Great Desolation God Extinguishing Spear, while Golden Phoenix gives him a feather that carries her aura and serves as a warning to anyone who would harm him. 215
Appearance
Ao Lie's true form is a white or silver dragon. When facing Sun Wukong, he manifests as a hundred-zhang-long silver dragon. He can also assume human form, which Golden Phoenix considers attractive. 215 219
- White dragon body and silver-scaled true form.
- Described as having a well-built dragon form. 215
- Considered a young dragon despite being nearly sixty thousand years old, as dragons age one year for every hundred thousand years. 323
- Commonly carries a silver-white spear, the Great Desolation God Extinguishing Spear. 215 218
Personality
Ao Lie is proud of his dragon lineage, strength, family connections, and marriage into the Phoenix Clan. He frequently invokes Golden Phoenix and Wa Huang Palace to deter enemies, openly treating his status as a powerful form of protection. 220 272 281
He is opportunistic and mercenary during the pilgrimage. He repeatedly prioritizes food, Merit, family interests, or personal safety over the Buddhist Sect's intended script, including deceiving Tian Peng in exchange for Tang Sanzang's meat and helping Xian Rui capture fellow pilgrims for a family banquet. 235 267
Though often arrogant and prone to relying on others, Ao Lie can be resolute in battle. He continues fighting Maitreya while badly injured, seeks revenge after being beaten at Lesser Thunderclap Monastery, and becomes increasingly ruthless in later conflicts. 220 316 364

Marriage and Dragon-Phoenix Harmony
Kong Xuan delivers Golden Phoenix to Eagle Grief Stream to finalize her arranged marriage with Ao Lie. The union gives Ao Lie a major political and familial shield, with Golden Phoenix and Ao Yue later declaring him the Dragon-Phoenix Harmony Ambassador. 215 221
Eagle Grief Stream
Ao Lie refuses to obediently become Tang Sanzang's mount. He gives Tang Sanzang a transformed dragon-horse instead, challenges him to prove himself, and defeats him with the Great Desolation God Extinguishing Spear. 218
He subsequently battles Sun Wukong. Although Wukong lands a powerful strike, Ao Lie's dragon form and combat ability force Wukong to retreat and concede Tang Sanzang. 219
Conflict with the Buddhist Sect
Maitreya attempts to punish Ao Lie for attacking and cooking Tang Sanzang. Ao Lie fights despite severe injuries until Golden Phoenix arrives and defeats Maitreya, while Ao Yue demands an explanation on behalf of the Dragon Clan. 220 221
