Background

Tang San retains memories of a former life connected to the Tang Sect. After his defeat at Suotuo City's arena, he dreams of returning to Ghostly Sorrow and witnessing the sect's destruction, including the death of Elder Tang Lan. The experience leaves him terrified of losing the people and institutions he values. 3

By the time of his first documented appearance, he has completed Shrek's first phase of training and has just become a Soul Elder. Confident in his Tang Sect arts, soul skills, concealed weapons, Clear Sky Hammer, and Eight Spider Lances, he seeks arena combat as a more meaningful test than sparring with his peers. 1 3

Personality

Tang San initially carries strong confidence in his own ability, believing that his ordinary Soul Power and soul skills are sufficient to defeat any opponent of his age without exposing the Eight Spider Lances. 1 He is especially protective of Yu Xiaogang's reputation; Chen Ling's criticism of his teacher immediately provokes him into abandoning restraint and escalating the duel. 2

Defeat damages his composure severely. After Chen Ling renders every major technique ineffective, Tang San suffers shock, helplessness, and a breakdown following Yu Xiaogang's harsh assessment of the battle. 2 3 Rather than accepting the loss, he becomes focused on revenge, recovering Xiao Wu, and obtaining power that will prevent another humiliation. 4 18

Tang San enters the Soul Fighting Arena after advancing to Soul Elder, expecting to test his new strength. He dismisses Chen Ling as an older but mediocre opponent, then loses after his Blue Silver Grass skills, Purple Demon Eye, concealed weapons, Eight Spider Lances, and Clear Sky Hammer are all countered. 1 3

Shrek's Retaliation

His loss prompts Yu Xiaogang and Xiao Wu to seek retaliation against Chen Ling. Tang San recovers some confidence when Yu Xiaogang promises to obtain Chen Ling's techniques, hoping to eliminate the weaknesses exposed in the duel. 4 5

Xiao Wu's Capture

When Chen Ling overwhelms the Shrek group, Tang San attempts to protect Xiao Wu after Chen Ling demands that she remain behind. He is unable to stop her capture and is knocked unconscious by Flender before he can provoke a larger confrontation. 9 10

Grief and Revenge

After Tang Hao is killed by Chen Ling, Tang San experiences severe pain through their blood connection but rejects the possibility that his father has died. He returns to training, using his grief over Tang Hao, resentment toward Chen Ling, and desire to recover Xiao Wu as motivation. 17 18

Heaven Dou Royal Academy Duel

Tang San confronts Chen Ling again after seeing Xiao Wu remain at Chen Ling's side. He proposes a weapon-only wager, expecting the Clear Sky Hammer and Disorder Splitting Wind Hammer to overcome Chen Ling's swordsmanship. 31 33

Xiao Wu publicly refuses to return to him. Enraged, Tang San abandons the spirit of the wager and attempts to assassinate Chen Ling with a Dragon Beard Needle and the Eight Spider Lances.
