Background / History

Yu Xiaogang accompanied Tang San and Xiao Wu to Suotuo City’s Soul Fighting Arena after Tang San advanced to Soul Elder. He advised Tang San to conceal the Eight Spider Lances and expressed complete confidence that no peer could defeat his disciple. 1

After Tang San’s defeat by Chen Ling, Xiaogang initially tended to his injured disciple, then harshly assessed the battle as “an old man toying with a child.” The intended lesson instead contributed to Tang San’s emotional collapse. 3

Rather than accepting the arena result, Xiaogang decided Chen Ling had been unfairly “bullying the young.” He planned to use Flender and Zhao Wuji’s superior strength to force Chen Ling to apologize, surrender his self-created techniques, and potentially join Shrek Academy as a nominal disciple. 4 8

The confrontation catastrophically failed. After Chen Ling revealed eight Soul Rings, Xiaogang continued challenging him and was severely punished; Chen Ling spared his life because of his connection to the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan. 9

Following Shrek’s financial crisis, Xiaogang relocated with the academy to Heaven Dou City. His altered appearance and reduced cultivation prevented Yu Tianheng from recognizing him, while his former comrades Flender and Tang San persuaded him to reunite with Liu Erlong. 18 22 27

Appearance

Yu Xiaogang was initially a lean, middle-aged man with a crew cut, dressed in a plain gray scholar’s robe. His demeanor combined a worn-down air with conspicuous arrogance. 1

After Chen Ling’s punishment and subsequent decline in Soul Power, his appearance changed drastically; he abandoned his scholar’s robe for more practical clothing and was described as resembling an elderly woman with short hair. 27

Personality

His concern for Tang San is genuine, but it is entangled with dependence and ambition. After his own mutilation, he regarded Tang San as his remaining hope and supported the disciple’s pursuit of revenge and greater strength. 18 35

His confidence repeatedly becomes self-delusion. He misread Chen Ling’s restraint as fear of the Papal Token, presumed Liu Erlong’s devotion would remain unconditional, and refused to accept overwhelming evidence of Chen Ling’s superiority. 28 33 36

Loss of Blue Tyrant Academy

When Chen Ling demands accountability for the Golden Saint Dragon’s attack, Liu Erlong accepts responsibility and offers Blue Tyrant Academy to settle the matter. Xiaogang remains silent as she sacrifices her academy and autonomy, ending her remaining faith in him. 36
