Background / History
Madara was once the Uchiha Clan head who helped establish Konoha alongside Hashirama Senju. He later defected from the village, an act blamed for Hashirama's death and for the Uchiha Clan's subsequent political isolation within Konoha. Homura Uchiha regards him as a clan traitor who abandoned the people he had once led. 242
Having fused Indra and Ashura Chakra, Madara awakened the Rinnegan, acquired Wood Release, and grasped Yin-Yang Release. The Rinnegan's burden devastated his body, forcing him to summon the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path to preserve his life before removing the eyes from himself. 235 252
By the present era, Madara survives in an underground lair and spends long periods asleep to conserve his dwindling lifespan. He relies on Black Zetsu and White Zetsu for intelligence, keeps Nagato under surveillance as the Rinnegan's host, and seeks to carry out the Moon Eye Plan personally rather than entrust it to a successor. 130 234
His situation changes after he summons Hashirama through Impure World Reincarnation and steals his Sage Chakra. The resulting Sage Mode restores his life force, gives him roughly another decade to act, and convinces him that he can complete his plan himself. 266 267
Appearance
Madara initially appears as a frail, aged man whose body deteriorates rapidly when separated from the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path. After absorbing Hashirama's Sage Chakra, he becomes visibly younger and stronger. 234 267 285
- Often wears a black robe while operating from concealment. 242
- Possesses Sharingan and later uses the Rinnegan. 235 318
- His Sage Chakra causes Sage Markings to appear on the Hashirama face embedded in his chest. 267
- By the time of his renewed campaign, his wrinkles have faded and his hair has regained much of its color. 285
Personality
Madara is arrogant, calculating, and intensely contemptuous of weakness. He considers the Will of Fire unreliable, values overwhelming strength above ideals, and finds little satisfaction in defeating opponents who cannot challenge him. 245 246
He is patient when gathering intelligence or arranging long-term schemes, but his pride frequently causes him to underestimate emerging threats—especially Kirito Tonsaka. Black Zetsu repeatedly has to redirect him toward caution, leverage, or compromise. 214 305
His pursuit of power steadily strips away his remaining restraint. He uses allies, captives, corpses, and even former comrades as disposable tools, ultimately deciding that villages and sacred lands that might oppose him should simply be erased. 258 270 356
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan and Mangekyō Sharingan
Madara's dōjutsu grants exceptional perception, genjutsu, and control over opponents who meet his gaze.
- His Three-Tomoe Sharingan has ocular power exceeding that of an ordinary Mangekyō Sharingan. 235
- He can use powerful genjutsu to control Danzō and Root's Edo Tensei forces. 258 259
- He uses Homura's Mangekyō Sharingan and its Fire Release Clone Technique to create convincing decoys. 245
- He can employ Izanagi to alter reality and survive otherwise fatal attacks, at the cost of a Sharingan. 243 247 381
Susanoo
Madara manifests a blue Susanoo vastly stronger than those of most Uchiha.
- His second-stage Susanoo already exceeds Homura Uchiha's third-stage construct in size. 242
- The second stage wields four Chakra Katanas and can withstand coordinated elemental attacks. 235 236
- His fifth-stage Susanoo represents a qualitative leap in strength and enabled him to confront Hashirama during his prime. 244
- He can create Uchiha Shadow Clones capable of using third-stage Susanoo independently. 374
Wood Release
Madara possesses Hashirama's Wood Release, which he uses for both offense and absorption.
- Deep Forest Emergence creates chakra-draining vegetation capable of incapacitating multiple enemies. 237
- Wood Clone Jutsu creates durable decoys capable of deceiving opponents using Izanagi. 243
- Wood Release allows him to absorb Hashirama's Sage Chakra directly. 267
- It supports his Mangekyō Sharingan, reducing the risk of blindness from sustained use. 244
Sage Mode
Madara acquired Sage Mode by forcibly taking Hashirama's Sage Chakra.
- Sage Chakra rejuvenates his body and substantially extends his lifespan. 267 285
- His Sage Chakra reserves later become vast enough that Orochimaru compares them to those of the White Snake Sage. 353
- His physical durability is sufficient to withstand the White Snake Sage's White Rage Technique and continue moving. 353
Rinnegan and Yin-Yang Release
Madara's Rinnegan is central to both his personal power and the Moon Eye Plan.
- He creates Black Rods for remote chakra transmission, jutsu conduction, and corpse control. 246 318
- He can use Rinnegan power to sense and counter enemy attacks, including sealing the Fourth Raikage's Chakra. 373
- Tengai Shinsei / Planetary Devastation summons meteors capable of devastating Ryūchi Cave. 353 354
- Kagutsuchi destroys the puppet body used by the Faceless Man. 354
- He uses Yin-Yang Release alongside his Sharingan to harm souls even without the Rinnegan physically in his possession. 247
Impure World Reincarnation
Madara improves and weaponizes Impure World Reincarnation to build an undead force.
- He summons Hashirama Senju using a Chimera sacrifice, retaining much of Hashirama's strength while restricting his actions. 266 267
- He resurrects Homura Uchiha, the Second Mizukage, and the Second Tsuchikage to assault Konoha's camp. 270
- He later uses Edo Tensei bodies, including Hashirama and Tobirama, during operations against Kirito. 298 305
- The technique becomes less central after Kirito develops methods that can counter it. 318
Six Paths of Pain
Madara turns powerful corpses into Rinnegan-equipped Pain clones.
- Naraka Path — created from the Third Kazekage's corpse. 318
- Animal Path — initially created from the Third Mizukage, then replaced by the White Snake Sage. 318 356
- Hell Path — created from Roshi's corpse after the Four-Tails' capture. 351
- Deva Path — uses Shinra Tensei to repel and injure the Fourth Raikage. 371
- His Pain forces include reanimated former Kage enhanced with Rinnegan and Mangekyō Sharingan powers. 371
Demonic Statue of the Outer Path
The Demonic Statue sustains Madara's life and serves as the vessel for his Tailed Beast collection.
- Its life-sustaining power initially keeps him alive, though separation from it accelerates his aging. 234
- Each absorbed Tailed Beast further revives the statue and opens additional eyes. 351 369
- Its revival strengthens White Zetsu connected to it; Madara believes sufficiently empowered White Zetsu can each reach Kage-level combat strength. 351
- Madara uses it to gather Tailed Beasts and restore the Ten-Tails for his final objective. 360 381
Relationships
- Black Zetsu — intelligence operative and adviser who follows Madara's orders while covertly manipulating his decisions; Madara increasingly distrusts its independence. 130 214 270
- Hashirama Senju — former friend and rival; Madara resurrects, restrains, studies, and drains him for Sage Chakra. 259 266 267
- Kirito Tonsaka — principal enemy and obstacle to the Moon Eye Plan; Madara recognizes Kirito's rapid growth as a grave threat. 214 247 305
- Nagato — host of Madara's Rinnegan; Madara monitors his development and protects Yahiko and Konan because of their influence on him. 64 130 234
- Homura Uchiha — former Uchiha Clan head who considers Madara a traitor; Madara kills him, takes his Mangekyō Sharingan, and later revives him as a pawn. 242 243 270
- Hatake Sakumo — captive and bargaining chip used against Kirito; Madara keeps him alive only for strategic value. 247 258
- Orochimaru — coerced subordinate bound by a Reincarnation Curse Mark and directed to assist Tailed Beast cultivation and forbidden-technique research. 336 345
- Hiruko — subordinate tasked with expanding the Oni Organization and improving Impure World Reincarnation. 318 336
- Akasuna — manipulated into serving Madara's plans and later threatened into spying at the Five Kage Summit. 338 363
Story Role / Major Arcs
Shadow Operations
Madara initially remains hidden, dispatching White Zetsu to collect intelligence and monitor Nagato. He accelerates Mito Uzumaki's death, investigates Hattori Masanari, and seeks to exploit Konoha's internal conflicts through Danzō and Old Root. 64 130 214
Return to the Battlefield
After infiltrating Kirigakure and Amegakure, Madara confronts Kirito's forces directly. He demonstrates the strength of his Susanoo and Wood Release, but Kirito's Sage-enhanced techniques force him to reassess the threat posed by the new generation. 234 235 236 237
Homura's Death and Hashirama's Resurrection
Madara kills Homura Uchiha, takes his Mangekyō Sharingan, captures Sakumo, and seizes Old Root's resources. He then summons Hashirama with Impure World Reincarnation and steals Sage Chakra to restore his own fading body. 242 243 258 266 267
Tailed Beast Campaign
Madara begins systematically cultivating and capturing Tailed Beasts to revive the Demonic Statue. He builds the Oni Organization, creates Pain clones from Kage-level corpses, captures the Four-Tails, and treats the Tenseigan and the sacred lands as threats requiring elimination. 318 345 351 356
Destruction of Ryūchi Cave and Kirigakure
Madara destroys Ryūchi Cave with meteors, captures the White Snake Sage, turns her into an Animal Path Pain, and gains control of her giant snakes. He then destroys Kirigakure to seize the Six-Tails, prompting the Five Kage to unite against him. 353 355 356 359
Third Shinobi World War and Final Battle
After absorbing multiple Tailed Beasts, Madara initiates the Third Shinobi World War and assaults the Five Kage Summit with his Six Paths of Pain. He eventually absorbs the Yin Nine-Tails into the Demonic Statue and declares the Ten-Tails complete. 369 371 381
Trivia
- Madara considers Sharingan, Wood Release, and Sage Art the only powers in the Shinobi World worthy of his interest. 214
- His fear of Sage Art stems partly from Hashirama's mastery of both Sage Art and Wood Release. 214
- He regards the Rinnegan as both invaluable and dangerous, having nearly been drained to death by its power when he first awakened it. 252
- He initially intends to find a successor for the Moon Eye Plan because his aging body seems unable to complete it. 234
