Background / History

Tang Chen was the first sect master of the Clear Sky Sect and grandfather of Tang Hao and Tang Xiao. He previously underwent the Asura God Examination and obtained the divine artifact Asura Demon Sword, but an accident prevented him from inheriting the Asura Godhood. His mind was subsequently corrupted by the Blood-Red Nine-Headed Bat King, leaving him as Slaughter City’s King of Slaughter. 32 34

After the Asura God’s Divine Thought was defeated by Chu Yuan, Asura restored Tang Chen’s consciousness by expelling and destroying the Bat King’s influence. Although Tang Chen was no longer considered suitable for the Asura God’s own position, Asura promised him a chance at a Second-Level God position in exchange for completing a new task. 32

Tang Chen was ordered to find Tang San, bring him to Slaughter City, and guide him through the Asura God Examination. He viewed the mission as a way for the Tang family to retain the Asura inheritance, even if he could not obtain it himself. 33 34

Personality

Tang Chen is stern, traditional, and intensely family-oriented. He considers respect for elders and stronger Soul Masters essential, and responds to Tang San’s initial hostility by physically disciplining him with the same whip once used on Tang Hao and Tang Xiao. 33 34

He is also protective to the point of recklessness. Yu Xiaogang’s embellished account of Spirit Hall’s conflict with Tang Hao, combined with the sight of Clear Sky Sect corpses hanging from Spirit City’s walls, drives Tang Chen into a murderous attempt to attack Spirit Hall. 35 36

As Tang San’s mentor, Tang Chen is encouraging and deeply proud of his great-grandson, calling him a “qilin child.” However, he endorses Tang San’s use of Slaughter City’s inhabitants as cultivation resources and accepts Tang San’s increasingly violent interpretation of the Asura God’s trial. 34 35

Tang Chen locates Tang San at Shrek Academy, reveals their family connection after disciplining him, and brings him to Slaughter City. He discloses Tang San’s Clear Sky Sect lineage, Twin Martial Souls, and the ten-year deadline to become the Asura God’s successor. 33 34

He supports Tang San’s accelerated cultivation through killing in Slaughter City and agrees to bring Yu Xiaogang into the city. Tang Chen becomes convinced that Tang San’s reasoning and ambition mark him as the Tang family’s future hope. 35

Attempted Assault on Spirit Hall

After hearing Yu Xiaogang’s version of Tang Hao’s history, Tang Chen flies to Spirit City seeking revenge. Seeing Clear Sky Sect bodies displayed on the walls, he challenges Qian Daoliu and attempts to launch an all-out attack before Asura forcibly recalls him. 36

Trespass into Star Dou Forest

Five years later, Tang Chen accompanies the Soul Saint Tang San into Star Dou Forest to obtain a Hundred-Thousand-Year Soul Ring for Tang San’s seventh ring. Both openly regard Soul Beasts as tools for Soul Masters, prompting Chu Yuan to confront them personally. 37
