Li Lin was an orphan in his current life, but retains memories of a previous existence as the blindborn heir of the Northern Water Tribe and an Earthbender. His former blindness trained him to perceive the world through vibration, an instinct that later became central to his combat style and elemental control. 1 3 16

In first grade, he became bound to Xia Mi through the Dragon-Slaying Binding System. Her progress repeatedly elevated his own abilities, granting him photographic memory, exceptional physical capacity, broad academic knowledge, and rapid technical learning. 1
