Lan Shuang was the leader of the Sea Spirit Clan on Cold Moon Island. When the Dragon Clan demanded three thousand able-bodied youths for its war effort, she refused; the island was razed, and the clan elders fought to secure the survivors’ escape. With sixty-eight refugees, including children, she led the clan into the forbidden Abyss rather than submit to Ao Zheng of the Blackwater Dragon Palace. 2

Abyss admitted the refugees under strict conditions: remain quiet, do not fight, do not reveal the realm, and leave after one hundred years. Lan Shuang immediately recognized the hidden master’s power and knelt in gratitude, beginning her enduring reverence for Lu Chen as the “Emperor” despite his objections to the title. 2

Rather than merely surviving, Lan Shuang organized the Sea Spirit Clan into the foundation of a functioning settlement. By the time Lu Chen emerged, the refugees had built homes, roads, spirit fields, training grounds, storehouses, and the Northern Darkness Dao Palace, alongside the Bureau of Calamity Avoidance, Bureau of Realm Patrol, and Register of Ten Thousand Tribes. 3

After receiving the Book of Cause and Effect, she became its chief administrator. She used it to register entrants, screen outsiders by karma and origin, restrict dangerous individuals from the Dao Palace, and establish an alternative to the Primordial World’s rule of unchecked strength. 4 5

She formally established the Bureau of Cause and Effect and incorporated the Register of Ten Thousand Tribes into it. Her first major judgments included approving the Mystic Clam Tribe and expelling the Redfin Tribe chief and his accomplices for their blood debts, while permitting uninvolved Redfin members to remain in the outer city and labor for a thousand years. She also proposed Abyss Academy, received the Abyss Stillness Art from Lu Chen for restricted teaching there, and personally led its first lesson. 5 7

After Ao Lie was assigned to guard Abyss’s outskirts, Lan Shuang proposed building Dragon-Suppressing Pass. When seventeen more refugee clans arrived, she sought Lu Chen’s decision rather than admitting them solely out of sympathy, then administered their screening under the upgraded Book of Cause and Effect. 9 10 11

During the Blackwater Dragon Palace’s assault, Lan Shuang helped turn Abyss’s displaced clans into a united defense. She exposed Dragon Clan soldiers’ past atrocities through the Book of Cause and Effect, transforming the defenders’ fear into organized resistance at Dragon-Suppressing Pass. 13

She later led Abyss’s first external expedition to the Northern Dark Water Palace. There, she kept the group focused on Lu Chen’s orders to prioritize survival, identified the Sea Devourer’s weakness through the Book, and coordinated the use of Abyss Water Aura to secure the Black Tortoise Sea-Calming Pearl. 20 22

When the Sea Devourer asked to enter Abyss, Lan Shuang insisted that it first disperse its slaughter karma. She offered only to bring its soul pearl back for Lu Chen’s decision, refusing to guarantee admission or an audience beyond her authority. Using the Book of Cause and Effect, she assisted its purification and brought back both its soul pearl and the Sea-Calming Pearl. 23 24

As Abyss expanded, Lan Shuang reorganized land and resource distribution around merit, helped establish the Abyss Treasury, directed the millennium-long preparations against the Dragon Clan Main Lineage, and oversaw the expulsion of infiltrators discovered by the Book of Cause and Effect. 26 28

When ancestral grudges among Dragon, Phoenix, and Qilin youths erupted at Abyss Academy, she reported the danger to Lu Chen and implemented his decision to establish the Calamity-Resolution Hall under the Bureau of Cause and Effect. She registered old grievances for karmic judgment and sentenced those involved in the fight to a hundred years in meditation chambers. Later, she helped establish the Young Clans Court and personally taught its first lesson, emphasizing survival and Abyss’s rules before inherited hatred. 38 46

During the Dragon-Han Cataclysm, Lan Shuang coordinated construction support for the Calamity-Viewing Platform and received the order to build the Three Lives Gate. She announced the gate’s screening procedures, organized refugee reception, and helped guide vengeful souls through it when Youdu attempted to overwhelm Abyss. As the crisis intensified, she mobilized the rescue zone, treasury, Young Clans Court, Realm Guard, and Realm-Guarding Yin Soldiers, then placed Abyss in its highest Calamity-Avoidance State. 44 47 49 54 58

After the Dragon-Han Cataclysm, she convened Abyss’s first grand assembly and formalized laws preventing the return of the Three-Clan Hegemony within the refuge. She later investigated the counterfeit Mysterious Abyss Divine Court and devised the Three Lives Post Stations as non-territorial evacuation and communication points across the Northern Sea. 68 136 138

As the Ten Thousand Demons Alliance expanded, Lan Shuang refused to register Abyss’s inhabitants collectively. She allowed individual clans to join voluntarily but rejected conscription of unregistered residents or the extension of Demon Clan military authority across the Three Lives Gate. In later discussions with the Demon Marshal, she explained that Abyss was itself a shared identity and that its rules governed those living within the gate, while acknowledging the obligations of residents who voluntarily accepted Demon Court resources and covenants. 80 81 101

Lan Shuang also worked with Mysterious Abyss’s increasingly independent Old Shell. At Lu Chen’s request, she assessed its changed aura, observing that it felt more physically present while its connection to the true body had become harder to trace. Later, she submitted a Spirit Field dispute and other administrative matters to the independently acting Old Shell, admiring its continued reliance on merit, existing officials, and delegated authority. 92 130

The arrival of dead souls became an increasing part of her work. She examined and arranged accommodation for Shi Sheng, an early Human Clan soul taken in by Abyss, and reported that souls were also gathering at the Three Lives Post Stations. After reincarnation was established, she bid farewell to long-resident souls and used the Book of Cause and Effect to help Shi Sheng learn the fate of his surviving family before he departed. 140 141 142 163

During the Witch-Demon conflict at the Thirty-Fourth Three Lives Post Station, Lan Shuang arrived with Ao Lie, checked on the injured station guards, and revealed the causal histories of Chiling and Kua Yue. When Great Witch Xingchuan questioned how the Book could judge witches without primordial spirits, she explained that it also read traces left in vital energy, weapons, and the surrounding world. Xingchuan ultimately accepted the station’s rules. 173 176

As refugees fled the Ten Suns Across the Sky, Lan Shuang warned that at least fifteen post stations were nearing capacity. After Mysterious Abyss approved trial water-vein connections between stations rather than expansion beyond the Northern Sea, she mobilized the relevant offices. She subsequently brought forward the Azurewing, Inkfeather, and Redtail clans’ settlement requests, consulted Ao Lie and Han Jue, and obtained approval to admit them through the existing karmic audit despite their Demon Court affiliations. 197 202

Lan Shuang is resolute under pressure. She chose the lethal uncertainty of Abyss over surrendering her people to the Dragon Clan, then transformed a shattered refugee group into a durable community. 2 3

She is deeply devoted to Lu Chen but repeatedly interprets his cautious, literal instructions as evidence of a larger political design. This tendency helps Abyss grow rapidly, even when Lu Chen intended only to avoid trouble. 3 16 19

As Abyss’s Fate Overseer, she is calm, procedural, and unwilling to compromise its laws for status or bloodline. She requires even potential allies and ancient remnant souls to submit to karmic examination, while refusing to promise outcomes beyond her authority. 23 34 36

Her compassion is informed by her own experience as a refugee, but she distinguishes sympathy from indiscriminate admission. The arrival of desperate clans reminds her of the Sea Spirit Clan’s flight, yet she still seeks authorization and insists on screening for hidden wrongdoing. During the water-palace expedition, she explicitly places her companions’ lives above obtaining treasure. 11 20 54

She resists imposed collective identities and coercive recruitment. Rather than accepting the Demon envoy’s assurances of shared ancestry and benefits, she repeatedly asks whether registration is voluntary and defends residents’ right to remain outside the Demon Registry. 80 81

Her approach to the dead is similarly restrained and humane. She explains to Houtu that Abyss gives souls somewhere to stay without claiming to be their final destination, and supports the possibility of a path through which they can begin again.
