Background
Rocks became one of the most feared pirates on the seas before the formation of his crew. His known exploits include kidnapping five kings during the Reverie, infiltrating Mary Geoise alone, severely wounding an Admiral beyond treatment, repeatedly seizing the Heavenly Tribute, and destroying the Gates of Justice with a single slash. The wounded Admiral later died, and Rocks's reputation alone frightens Cipher Pol Aigis Zero agents 2 3.
Operating from Hachinosu, Rocks gathered notorious and exceptionally powerful pirates under his banner, including Shiki, Edward Newgate, Charlotte Linlin, Kaido, Captain John, Ochoku, and Extreme Fierce. His recruitment of rising monsters caused the Marines and World Government to view his crew as a major threat 2 6 10.
Rocks personally recruited Oak after recognizing the West Blue fighter's potential. When Oak demanded to know his ambition before joining, Rocks openly declared his intention to conquer the world and become its sole king 10.
Rocks was born on God Valley and belongs to the Davy Family, a bloodline targeted by the World Government. He concealed his relatives there, later trusting Oak to arrange their discreet relocation. His relationship with Alice, also a member of the Davy Family, and their son Teach became a vulnerability the Government sought to exploit 80 81 82 124 125 145.
Appearance
Rocks is a tall, powerfully built man with a beastlike, ferocious face. His short blue-and-white hair flares outward like flames, while his sharp eyes and domineering presence give the impression of a volcano about to erupt 10.
- Wild, flame-like blue-and-white hair.
- Sharp, blade-like eyes.
- Muscular frame and intimidating stature.
- Carries the rapier Erosion 20.
Personality
Rocks is extraordinarily ambitious, seeking nothing less than world conquest. He recruits powerful people through the force of his vision rather than demanding unquestioning loyalty, accepting that his crew is a volatile alliance driven by personal goals and profit 10 19.
He is quick-tempered, especially where Harald is concerned, but can restrain himself when necessary. Although enraged by the Marines' apparent use of Elbaf warriors against him, he orders his crew to incapacitate the giants rather than kill them 19 46.
His charisma can temporarily unite even the fractious Rocks Pirates. After Kaido challenges his authority, Rocks delivers a speech about reaching “the top of the world,” inspiring the crew—including Oak—to follow him 19.
Rocks is fiercely protective of his family and takes precautions to conceal them from the World Government. When Saturn offers to exchange captured relatives for his crewmates, however, Rocks refuses to sacrifice the crew or enter what he recognizes as a trap in the Holy Land 82 145 146.
Abilities & Skills
Overwhelming Physical Power
Rocks possesses strength great enough to kill an Admiral and command the respect of the era's most dangerous pirates 2 33.
- Restrained Shiki and Captain John simultaneously, blocking Shiki's sword with one hand while holding John down with the other 42.
- His Conqueror's Haki pressure damaged his own ship's hull and incapacitated nearly every ordinary Marine aboard more than one hundred warships 46.
- Defeated Extreme Fierce, whose ability converted received damage into increased size and strength, by overpowering the ability's limit 20.
- Split God Valley with a sword slash after Alice and Teach escaped the immediate path of his attack 183.
Swordsmanship
Rocks wields Erosion, a rapier whose attacks strike with the force of artillery.
- His sword strikes produce devastating shockwaves that shatter the ground across the plaza 20.
- Uses the technique Abyssal Curse, concentrating overwhelming force into a decisive slash 20.
- His swordsmanship is powerful enough that Oak considers it far beyond techniques used by other elite fighters 21.
Conqueror's Haki Infusion
Rocks can coat his weapon in Conqueror's Haki, producing black lightning and drastically increasing the power of his attacks 20.
- Used Conqueror's Haki-infused Abyssal Curse to defeat Extreme Fierce after ordinary attacks only strengthened him 20.
- His mastery serves as Oak's benchmark for learning the technique 21.
- His Haki is far beyond Oak's, who regards witnessing it firsthand as a measure of how much stronger he must become 46.
- Can use Conqueror's Haki defensively to neutralize another fighter's infused attacks. Garp's Fist Bone Impact failed to harm him, and Rocks later resisted attacks from Garp and Roger with a sustained defensive barrier 57 61 202 203.
- Can concentrate Haki in a wound to interfere with the black flames sustaining an Elder's regeneration. His Abyssal Curse left Saturn unable to heal until Imu reinforced the flames 163.
Devil Fruit Power: Bird-Bird Fruit, Model: Phoenix
During the God Valley Incident, Rocks consumed a Mythical Zoan Phoenix Fruit provided via Oak, immediately regenerating from fatal injuries, shattered bones, and ruptured internal organs to return to his prime 208.
- Instantly heals from critical wounds using azure phoenix flames 208.
- Grants a massive physical boost that elevates him beyond his original limits 208.
- Can transform into an azure phoenix; he used its flames to block an attack from Imu while protecting his retreating allies 209.
Leadership and Strategy
Rocks combines immense strength with long-term planning toward world conquest.
- Seeks the Black Dragon Nidhogg Fruit for Harald and the Dark-Dark Fruit for himself 18.
- Searches for the Great Hammer Warband in order to rebuild and operate Pluton 27 28.
- Chooses preparation over immediate action, prioritizing the recovery of Pluton's builders before traveling to Wano 28.
- Recognizes that direct conflict with the hidden power of Mary Geoise would be premature after sensing Imu's overwhelming aura 33.
- Identifies the black flames as the source of Saturn's regeneration and tests how Conqueror's Haki can suppress them 163.
- Orders the Rocks Pirates disbanded and stays behind to confront Imu, giving his former crewmates an opportunity to escape 209 210.
Equipment / Weapons / Items

- Xebec's Sword — The flagship of the Rocks Pirates 24.
Relationships
- Oak — Personally recruits Oak into the Rocks Pirates after revealing his ambition. Rocks increasingly trusts Oak's intelligence and agrees to assist with his secret objectives 10 26. He entrusts Oak with relocating his family; at God Valley, Oak helps free him from Black-Turn Domination and obtains the Phoenix Fruit that saves his life 82 204 208.
- Kaido — Captain and apprentice subordinate. Rocks regularly disciplines Kaido's recklessness, including kicking him after he proposes subjugating Harald by force 18 19. He later celebrates Kaido's acquisition of the Azure Dragon power and orders him to retreat from Imu 185 209.
- Edward Newgate — Core crewmate and trusted combatant who accompanies Rocks on the secret Punk Hazard expedition and stands by him during the final battle at God Valley 26 27 185.

- Charlotte Linlin — Crewmate and intelligence gatherer whose network supports the crew's searches and raids 18 42.
- Harald — Former friend and king of Elbaf. Rocks wants Harald to wield the Nidhogg Fruit and views Elbaf as essential to conquering the Holy Land 18 19. Their friendship ends after Harald rejects an alliance against the World Government and the two fight on Elbaf 128.
- Extreme Fierce — A prospective recruit who challenges Rocks's right to captain the crew; Rocks defeats him decisively 20.
- Ochoku — Crewmate whose greed makes him vulnerable to World Government manipulation. Oak warns Rocks that Ochoku may be a traitor, and Newgate later accuses Ochoku of leaking a crew operation 26 33 57.
- Alice — Rocks's secret romantic partner and fellow member of the Davy Family, with whom he has a son, Teach 124 183.
- Teach — Rocks's infant son with Alice, who witnesses his father's stand at God Valley 125 183.
- Imu — The hidden ruler whose power Rocks sensed in Mary Geoise. Imu's Black-Turn Domination briefly controls Rocks at God Valley; after being freed, Rocks remains behind to confront Imu alone 33 195 204 209 210.
- Garp and Roger — Powerful rivals who join Oak in defeating Rocks while he is under Black-Turn Domination. The World Government later falsely credits Garp alone with executing him 197 204 211.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Recruitment of Oak
Rocks sends Shiki to retrieve Oak and has Newgate retrieve Kaido, bringing both young fighters to Hachinosu as apprentices. He recruits Oak after the latter accepts his world-conquering ambition 3 4 10.
Building the Rocks Pirates
Rocks establishes himself as the crew's dominant authority while managing constant rivalries among its members. He permits Oak and Kaido's destructive duel, later offers Oak full membership if he can defeat any official crewmate, and defeats Extreme Fierce when the newcomer challenges his right to lead 13 15 20.
Pluton Revival Plan
Rocks seeks the Great Hammer Warband, believing its Ancient Giant craftsmen are necessary to restore and operate Pluton. Oak's knowledge leads him to consider the Shadow-Shadow Fruit as a means of reviving the dead builders as obedient zombies 27 28.
Conflict with the Marines
After the Rocks Pirates are surrounded by a Marine fleet, Rocks changes from retreating to attacking. The arrival of Elbaf warriors enrages him because he believes the Government is attempting to divide him from Harald; nevertheless, he orders the giants spared and demands the enemy commander be captured alive 46.
During the confrontation, Rocks overwhelms Garp. His defensive Conqueror's Haki neutralizes Garp's infused punches, while his precisely concentrated Abyssal Curse drives the Marine back 57 60 61.
Marineford Assault
Rocks leads the full crew to Marineford to retaliate against the World Government for attacking Hachinosu and capturing his allies, easily defeating Fleet Admiral Zorn and clashing with Saint Saturn 147 153 157. He discovers that Conqueror's Haki can suppress Saturn's regeneration, but Imu intervenes through Saturn. Oak, Kaido, and Newgate then force Rocks to withdraw before he can test himself against the possessed Elder 163 165.
God Valley Incident and Disbandment
Lured to his birthplace of God Valley by a World Government trap involving his family and Shakuyaku, Rocks fights through an army of God's Knights and transformed family members before facing Imu's possession and the Five Elders 168 184. He rescues Alice and Teach, holds off their pursuers, and kills transformed relatives whom he cannot save from the Government's control 183 184.
Temporarily overtaken by Black-Turn Domination, he attacks former allies and is freed after being defeated by Garp, Roger, and Oak 195 196 204. Revived by the Phoenix Fruit, he orders the Rocks Pirates officially disbanded and stays behind to fight Imu alone so his crew can escape 208 209 210.
Uncertain Fate
The World Government reports that Rocks was executed by Garp, but Oak and Newgate cannot confirm what happened in his final confrontation with Imu. God Valley has vanished, and the Government suppresses records of the island 211. Years later, Oak notes that Rocks's Phoenix Fruit has never been known to reappear—even Marco possesses a different Mythical Zoan. Oak considers Rocks's survival possible but cannot rule out Imu or another unknown power preventing his escape, and resolves to investigate 469.
