History

Early Marine career

As a Vice Admiral, Sengoku confronted Golden Lion Shiki when Shiki came to rescue Oak from a World Government transport ship. Shiki initially dismissed Sengoku as unworthy of fighting him, but Sengoku answered by unveiling his golden Buddha Form and challenging him directly. His ordinary sword slashes could not damage Sengoku’s golden body; only Shiki’s Conqueror’s Haki Infusion finally wounded his palm. 6 8

After Admiral Kong’s capture by the Rocks Pirates, Sengoku was among the Marine officers disturbed by the World Government’s willingness to have Kong assassinated rather than allow a public execution. He and Tsuru understood the implication before the Fleet Admiral stated it openly. 62 70

Conflict with Oak

Sengoku’s hostility toward Oak became intensely personal because of Oak’s abuse, manipulation, and eventual abduction of Tsuru. He pursued Oak across the West Blue, attacked him in Buddha Form, and regarded him as a threat capable of eventually reaching Rocks’s level. 101 103 120

Their first extended rematch was interrupted when Ochoku ambushed Oak. Sengoku used the opening to strike Oak, but Oak escaped by critically injuring Ochoku, using Sengoku’s shockwave to propel himself away, and flying beyond the Marines’ reach. Sengoku subsequently urged Navy leadership to treat the seventeen-year-old Oak as a major future threat. 106 110 115

Sengoku later failed to prevent Oak from abducting Tsuru at the Venora Kingdom. Oak exploited his speed, hidden Vampire blood within Tsuru, and Sengoku’s protectiveness to incapacitate her and escape. When Oak used the unconscious Tsuru as a hostage during the fighting at Hachinosu, Sengoku could not risk attacking him. 120 143

At God Valley, Sengoku ordered weaker Marines away from the battlefield. When Garp confronted him about the slaughter of the island’s natives and enslaved people, Sengoku admitted that the Navy had received reports and that a person who tried to expose the truth had disappeared. 184

Admiral of the new generation

Following the collapse of the previous Admiral generation, Fleet Admiral Selen promoted Sengoku to Admiral under the title Wise General. Sengoku and Zephyr accepted their promotions, while Garp refused the position because he would not become a direct servant of the Celestial Dragons. Sengoku also erased evidence connecting Garp to an important prisoner’s escape and arranged for his absence to appear to be a pursuit of Roger. 220

As an Admiral, Sengoku and Tsuru confronted Oak after Oak defeated Byrnndi World. Their coordinated assault forced Oak to divide his attention, but Oak’s Paw-Paw Fruit, speed, regeneration, and superior endurance allowed him to suppress both of them over two days of fighting. Sengoku’s Buddha Form eventually collapsed after Oak pierced him through the chest and kicked him into the sea. 229 230 231 232 233

Sengoku followed Tsuru’s Vivre Card with Garp after Oak took her away, but was ordered to abandon the search and proceed to Hachinosu. There, the Marines captured Kaido as part of their operation. Sengoku destroyed one of Shiki’s falling islands with a Conqueror’s Haki-infused Buddha Shockwave, but Shiki successfully provoked him by invoking Tsuru. 242 250 251

Sengoku and Garp then fought Oak together. Oak’s newly acquired Cause-and-Effect Fruit converted much of the damage they inflicted into greater size and strength; after their close-range attacks failed, they attempted to wear him down from a distance. Oak nevertheless drove both Marines back and continued fighting them while his allies surrounded Ochoku. Zephyr later joined the assault. 255 256 257 261

After the World Government announced Oak’s supposed execution, Sengoku, Garp, and Zephyr led Navy forces against a month-long campaign of retaliation by Oak’s former allies. Sengoku subsequently became Fleet Admiral as a new generation of Marines rose through the ranks. 264 305 401

Fleet Admiral and Oak’s return

Thirty-six years after Oak’s disappearance, Sengoku was shocked to receive a report that Oak had returned and defeated Hawk-Eye Mihawk. As Fleet Admiral, he later managed the response to Luffy’s assault on a Celestial Dragon at Sabaody, dispatching Kizaru and allowing Eagle and Enel to accompany the operation. 305 384

Sengoku arrived at Sabaody with Aokiji and Tsuru and restrained Garp from immediately attacking Oak. He considered a temporary alliance with the Red-Hair Pirates when both groups faced Oak, but their combined offensive failed. Even attacks by Sengoku, Garp, Aokiji, Kizaru, Shanks, and Rayleigh could not break through Oak’s defenses. Sengoku used Buddha’s Radiance against him while trying to limit the danger to nearby civilians. 401 406 409

Oak’s awakened abilities left Sengoku increasingly doubtful that the assembled fighters could defeat him. Sengoku helped defend Rayleigh, but their intervention could not prevent Oak from severing Rayleigh’s arm; Oak later killed him. Sengoku and the other senior Marines were also driven back when Oak turned his attack toward their position. After the Five Elders arrived, they reprimanded Sengoku for the Navy’s defeat and ordered him to withdraw from the fight with Oak and arrest the pirates on Sabaody, particularly Shanks and Luffy. 413 414 423 425 426

Sengoku and the other Marines witnessed the God’s Knights massacre witnesses, including civilians, to conceal the World Government’s powers and Imu’s existence. They did not intervene, recognizing the danger of opposing the Government while Oak remained on the battlefield. 427

After Oak took Dressrosa and killed Doflamingo, Sengoku convened the Navy’s senior officers to assess the failing Shichibukai system. He predicted that Boa Hancock might also be drawn toward Oak, but argued that the World Government would not abolish the system without a replacement. Sengoku then ordered a temporary withdrawal of Navy forces from the New World, judging that none of its officers could reliably contain Oak. 459 460

Sengoku rejected Akainu’s suggestion of using Eagle as bait against Oak. He also announced that the World Government intended to replace him as Fleet Admiral through a leadership transition and worldwide military draft. Sengoku favored Aokiji over the Government’s preferred candidate, Akainu. Later, he warned Garp that the Government was watching for an attempt to free the imprisoned Luffy and that Garp must not repeat his earlier intervention on behalf of a prisoner. 460 461

Appearance

In combat, Sengoku transforms into a massive golden Buddha. In later years, he wears frog-shaped glasses, a long black beard braided into a single plait, a white Marine uniform, a Marine cap bearing a seagull, and a Justice coat with golden tassels. 6 102 401

Personality

Sengoku is resolute, disciplined, and unwilling to be intimidated by reputation. Shiki’s contempt only strengthened his determination to prove himself, while his battles show a preference for assessing an opponent’s abilities before changing tactics. 6 102

He is also deeply protective of Tsuru. Oak’s treatment of her repeatedly drives Sengoku into visible rage, sometimes compromising his usual composure and strategic restraint. Decades later, Oak still provokes him by alluding to Sengoku’s old feelings for her and his unmarried status. 101 120 230 251 401

Despite his loyalty to the Marines, Sengoku is unsettled by the World Government’s political cruelty. He was appalled by the plan to assassinate the captured Kong, and later acknowledged that the Navy had received reports about atrocities on God Valley before the informant disappeared. At Sabaody, however, he and the other senior Marines did not intervene when the God’s Knights killed witnesses. 70 184 427

As Fleet Admiral, Sengoku prioritizes the Navy’s survival over a futile confrontation with Oak. He also protects fellow officers from being used as expendable tools, opposing Akainu’s proposal to use Eagle as bait, while insisting that Garp cannot free Luffy merely because he is family. 460 461

Sengoku’s Mythical Zoan grants him a golden Buddha transformation centered on physical enhancement, immense size, defensive strength, and rapid recovery. 6 102
