Standing in the crowd, Evan swept his Demon Hunter Sight across the building and quickly located Mike in his office.
There was someone else in Mike's office: a Beyonder.
Judging by his aura through Demon Hunter Sight, he was an Apprentice Status Monk skilled at controlling human desire.
Evan's keen hearing let him make out their conversation clearly.
"Sir, Old Parker drank that potion over a day ago. Should I call him in so we can check on him?"
The middle-aged man facing Mike shook his head casually. "No need. The potion's taken effect. Now we'll see whether he can withstand the boss's blessing."
Mike grunted in acknowledgment, then asked eagerly, "Sir, once this job is done, will I be able to become someone like you?"
The middle-aged man said evenly, "Do your job. When the time is right, you'll get your reward."
Mike showed no resentment at the vague promise. Instead, he nodded excitedly.
Evan raised an eyebrow as he listened. The boss? That doesn't sound like a traditional Beyonder organization.
Just then, the two finished talking, and a middle-aged man in ordinary work clothes walked out.
His hair was graying, he stood around five foot nine, and he had a bright red nose, dry, peeling skin, and a face full of stubble. He looked like any other dockworker.
As he passed a rather pretty young clerk, he grinned, showing a mouthful of yellow teeth, then pointed a finger at her.
A flash of pink power flickered past.
The girl, who had been busy a moment ago, froze. The tension and preoccupation in her eyes vanished, leaving only love for this unremarkable-looking middle-aged man.
He grabbed her hand and started pulling her toward an empty office across the way.
