Background and history

Evan lives on Gooding Street and attends school while taking Professor Pulis’s potions. After surviving Zack’s gang at an abandoned factory, he identifies Pulis as a Vampire from his habits, the smell of his medicine and Evan’s unusually rapid improvement. Hill recognizes his judgment and offers to make him a Demon Hunter 19 22 23.

The transformation changes Evan’s prospects without removing his need to earn a living. He continues his studies and dockwork, later taking detective and security jobs. His resistance to potions also becomes a survival strategy: Armitage advises him to alter his blood so that his ancestor, Kaisha Mason, cannot use him as a sacrifice 35 42 86 112 119.

Evan’s investigations draw him into conflicts involving the Phoenix Brotherhood, Ghouls, experimental potions and supernatural rituals. He becomes an Expert during the campaign against the Ghouls, then leads the Rhine Demon Hunter faction and works as a Miskatonic University investigator. On meeting Mason, he accepts a contract to eliminate members of an Excellence Institute faction involved in blasphemous research 179 180 270 271.

Appearance

Evan changes from a pale, sickly student in patched clothes to a tall, broad-shouldered young man. He can conceal or activate his more conspicuous Demon Hunter traits 35 240.

• Demon Hunter form: Silver-white hair and golden slit pupils; his completed transformation also produces black veins 41 46.
• Copperization: Brass covers his skin in distinctive patterns 222.
• Forbidden Nine Dragons Tyrant form: A towering, scaled body with claws, wings, a mane, antlers and black mist 227.
• Blood Moon Spirit form: His head becomes a miniature Blood Moon that he can detach and hold 304.

Personality

Evan is cheerful and often irreverent, even when frightened or badly outmatched. He tests unfamiliar powers methodically, but his eagerness to take potions and gain strength repeatedly puts him at risk. His harmless-looking manner can also conceal deliberate provocation or careful planning 72 98 161 249 324.

Money and food strongly influence his choices: he accepts Eldin’s invitation only after she offers pay, keeps a bank deposit accessible, and enters an eating contest after months of insufficient meals. He is protective of people who helped him, including Hill, Richard and Parker, and wants to reduce the bodily costs other Demon Hunters bear 42 93 94 251 297.

Abilities and skills

Demon Hunter physiology and combat

• Enhanced strength, senses and potion resistance support his close-quarters fighting; inherited combat knowledge can surface instinctively when danger triggers it 38 46 271.
• Demon Hunter Sight reveals Beyonder traces, though sufficiently powerful Magic Artifacts can evade it 62 108.
• Hill teaches him Demon Hunter Combat Arts, including counters and ways to exploit the interval before a potion takes effect 71.
• Multiple potions can temporarily push him into a feral, rapidly healing combat state. Nine simultaneous injections unlock the Forbidden Nine Dragons Tyrant form without causing him to lose control 170 227.

Blood and plague Characteristics

• Cain Bloodthirsty Species: Grants powerful regeneration, but retains a need for blood and a vulnerability to silver 102 108.
• Copper Plague: Enables Copperization and the storage, refinement and transmission of pathogens. Evan can shape copperized tissue into plague-carrying bullets 72 93 98.
• Mist Brain Plague: Can affect minds and souls and shield Evan’s own soul; a Master-level ability can overwhelm its defenses 180 249 275 277.
• Toxic Blood: His blood can poison others and is potent enough to subdue his own rebelling Characteristics during advancement 41 179.

Black Sun’s Wings and special forms

• Black Sun’s Wings grant flight, endurance and defensive uses as the Characteristic develops. Its completed form gives Evan two additional chances to survive otherwise fatal situations 110 280.
• Blood Moon Spirit lets him perceive available enemy attacks and wield his detachable head. Its Burning Authority can harm Spirituality and souls and suppress Bestiality, but the form restricts his ordinary Demon Hunter abilities 304 306.

Secondary Brain and alchemy

• Evan’s retractable, claw-like Secondary Brain processes information, follows his thoughts and can keep watch while he sleeps. After evolving, it can use first-stage effects of three of his Characteristics; its effective combat range is limited to about twenty meters from him 46 94 187 213.
• He brews and tests Magic Potions and uses his Panel to track attributes, effects and the reversal of side effects 41 93 179.

Equipment and items

• One-Ninth Silver Key — Opens ordinary locks and can grant an additional ability to a Characteristic it carries; its use demands an exclusive secret each Thursday 98.
• Shadow Cloak — Can conceal Evan and fold itself around his waist when not in use 175 198.
• Transforming cane / Sacred Bone Staff — Takes forms including a cane, Ritual Knife, chains and a self-aiming rifle 253 300 327.
