Background / History

Hill comes from the Adolf Family but moves out rather than accept the marriage her parents arranged. They do not know she is a Demon Hunter and mistake the silver hair of her hunting form for a wig. She works at a public library despite a manager’s harassment because its rare books contain Ciphertext knowledge she needs 111 112.

She first approaches Evan after secretly observing his unusual tolerance for Magic Potions. Hill admits that she manipulated a Vampire into losing control, intending to rescue Evan and earn his trust; instead, he talks his way out and improvises a claim that he is her student. She backs up the story, then invites him to become a Demon Hunter. Hill later passes him her late teacher’s Demon Hunter Characteristic and trains him 21 22 23 71.

Her Ciphertext studies lead to her Expert advancement, but Ghouls attack during the vulnerable period afterward and capture Richard. Hill and the other Demon Hunters subsequently join the effort to rescue him 163 166 170 171.

After her family has her sent into a storybook through a Witch’s power, Hill accepts an offer to develop her Witch potential. She defeats Princess Sapp in a Potion Duel and claims a tavern in the Dreamlands. Choosing not to return to her family, she takes the name Hill Reinhardt and makes the tavern her base 197 203 204.

Appearance

Hill has an ordinary appearance when her Demon Hunter trait is inactive and a visibly supernatural one when it is activated 34 41.

• Inactive form: Long golden hair and blue eyes; she wears everyday clothing for her library work and travel 34 40 67.
• Demon Hunter form: Long silver-white hair, golden slit pupils and black blood 21 41.
• Hunting gear: Fitted leather armor, two swords across her back and supply pouches 21 168.
• Witch form: Her head can separate from her body as the Witch Mask 203.

Personality

Hill is proud of her work and quick to tease Evan, but she is candid about her mistakes and the dangers of Demon Hunter potions. She praises Evan’s judgment, worries when his transformations put him at risk and continues teaching him even after his raw strength surpasses hers 22 71 113.

She values independence. She endures an unpleasant library job rather than ask her estranged parents for help, and later leaves the Adolf name behind. As a Witch, she becomes more openly ambitious, seeking information, allies and influence to protect the fragile Demon Hunter faction 112 203 204 235.

Demon Hunter physiology and potions

Hill uses Magic Potions in combat and has the Black Blood System that helps Demon Hunters break down their toxins 22 41.

• Black blood provides poison resistance, but not immunity: a taste of Evan’s drug-saturated blood briefly poisons her, and Snake Person venom leaves her needing an antitoxin 40 41 116.
• She carries potions and other consumables for hunts; their expense affects which fights she can afford to pursue 115 168.

Mental influence

• Hill can affect a target’s mind or instinctive desires. She uses this to provoke a Vampire and later to incapacitate a robber 22 113.
• At the second stage of this Characteristic, she cannot precisely control what a target experiences 113.
• As an Expert, she can issue a command powerful enough to force a Giant Ghoul to kneel, though using it during Spirituality Shock causes severe backlash 164.

Telekinesis and movement

• She uses Telekinesis to restrain an afflicted student, defend against attacks and move allies out of danger 114 170 233.
• She can teleport repeatedly during a fight, though tracking attacks can keep her from closing on an opponent 115.

Rituals and Witch powers

• Hill performs an item-identification ritual without drawing a magic circle 154.
• Her Witch Mask holds her madness, recklessness and other extreme emotions, leaving her rational self separate. She later learns to switch between these states at will 203 205.
• She has an Audience Ritual through which Evan can visit her Dreamlands tavern, and can grant him a temporary movement-speed blessing there 204 223.
