Background

Richard was already in conflict with Professor Pulis when he first appeared, confronting him for breaking an agreement after the two had apparently fought several times in the preceding days. Pulis dismissively called Richard and his associates “lowlifes,” indicating their hostile history and different social positions within the Beyonder world 47.

He is a senior disciple within Evan’s Demon Hunter lineage. After Evan’s transformation, Richard accepts him as a junior brother, protects him from immediate threats, and becomes one of his principal guides in supernatural survival, combat, potion use, and faction politics 48 52 56.

Appearance

Richard’s ordinary appearance is that of a broad-shouldered man over 1.8 meters tall with a square face, chestnut eyes, and the build of a retired sailor or dock foreman. He commonly wears worn jackets, old work clothes, and heavy winter layers 52 249.

Richard is blunt, practical, and shaped by long experience in a dangerous profession. He is also deeply distrustful of official institutions, believing that government Beyonders primarily serve the ruling class rather than ordinary people 54.

Despite this cynicism, Richard is protective and affectionate toward his fellow Demon Hunters. He repeatedly praises Evan’s progress, respects his junior brother’s right to keep personal trump cards secret, and takes responsibility for protecting Hill during her advancement 52 53 211. His willingness to let Hill escape while he remained behind against Martin’s forces demonstrates that this loyalty extends beyond words 212.

Conflict with Pulis

Richard first appears confronting Pulis, then intervenes when Pulis attacks Evan. He takes the hit intended for Evan, counterattacks with Dragon Blood-enhanced strength, and leaves Pulis badly injured despite his escape 47 48 53.

Afterward, Richard helps Evan dispose of the Bloodthirsty Species assistant, gives him the recovered Beyonder Characteristic as spoils, and explains the strategic importance of secrecy and exploiting weaknesses 53.

Evan’s Mentor and Investigator Partner

Richard explains the Demon Hunters’ unofficial status, their Miskatonic University cover identity, and the practical value of becoming an investigator. He also analyzes Pulis’s letter, identifies Sapp as a likely threat, and begins teaching Evan how to identify and brew the potions Pulis left behind 54 56 116.

Ambush, Infection, and Recovery

Richard later arrives at Evan’s home severely wounded after an ambush connected to the Healing Church and Sapp Mining Group. Evan uses Copper Plague to absorb the Crypt Corpse Plague infecting Richard’s wounds, allowing Richard to recover and reveal more about Witches and incompatible Beyonder Characteristics 115.

Hill’s Advancement and Richard’s Capture

Richard prepares to protect Hill through the vulnerable Spirituality Shock Period following her Expert breakthrough. Martin’s group exploits Richard’s cold weakness through Chariot’s freezing breath; Richard throws Hill to safety, but is frozen unconscious and abducted 211 212.

He is later found wounded at Martin’s Ritual Ground. Evan, Hill, David, and Erlong fight through Ghouls and Copper Corpses to reach him, and Richard eventually recovers well enough to leave the Healing Church’s hospital 219 232.

Renewal of the Demon Hunter Faction

At Christmas, Richard publicly identifies Evan as the hope of their struggling faction, crediting him with bringing money, respect, and a possible future to the group. He formally welcomes Evan as a brother 254.

Richard later supports the faction’s transition into an official independent Beyonder organization and joins Wild Hunt after its registration as a security company and Special Operations Team supplier 266 320.

Defense of Evan’s Home

While Evan remains trapped in the Dreamlands, Richard, David, and Erlong defend his home from twelve Bloodthirsty Species and eight Ghouls. Using a Dragon Blood Potion alongside Cold Resistance and Erlong’s Soulfire, Richard overcomes his former weakness and helps eliminate the entire assault force in under twenty minutes 306.
