Background / History
Ye Tong was formerly a well-off high school student before transmigrating into the body of Grot Ye Tong, an orphan abandoned in Goa Kingdom’s Gray Terminal after his parents died of illness and he became sick himself. He awakened starving amid the dump, where the Junk-Picking System fused with him and converted discarded objects into food, money, clothing, skills, and equipment 1.
He spent roughly six months clearing Gray Terminal while training with Xiling, Armament Haki, and Beginner Swordsmanship. By the time he left, the dump had been completely emptied except for his small wooden cabin; he had also grown to approximately 1.7 meters tall at age twelve 3.
Appearance
At age twelve, Ye Tong was already approximately 1.7 meters tall due to his rapidly increasing physical attributes 3.
- Initially possessed a frail, malnourished body after awakening in Gray Terminal 1.
- Usually appears in Marine attire after joining the organization; he is seen wearing a Justice coat while cleaning in Donquixote Family territory 49.
- Commonly carries cleaning tools, including a broom and garbage bags, to support his cover as a cleaning soldier 21.
Personality
Ye Tong is intensely practical and opportunistic. He treats discarded objects as valuable resources and routinely prioritizes collecting garbage over food, social expectations, military etiquette, or even meetings with powerful Marines. His fixation is sincere rather than purely performative: he sees cleaning as both his preferred work and a way to improve the world 6 32 45.
He is calculating when opportunities arise. He leveraged Ace, Luffy, and Sabo’s hidden treasure to make them accept him as their older brother, pressured Dragon and Garp to discard items, and chose the Marines partly because their personnel and facilities provide better scavenging opportunities 4 11 17.
Despite his bluntness and growing confidence, Ye Tong remains emotionally inexperienced with violence. After killing Sig’s bandits, he vomited at the sight of the bodies, showing that his combat ability developed much faster than his tolerance for killing 12. He also values autonomy strongly, refusing Garp’s discipleship until it came with freedom to clean wherever he wished and repeatedly rejecting higher Marine responsibilities that would take him away from his chosen work 27 28 32.
Abilities & Skills
Junk-Picking System
Ye Tong’s central ability is a system that transforms personally collected discarded objects into rewards.
- Can receive food, money, clothing, weapons, skills, Haki, physical attributes, and Pickup Points from junk 1 2.
- Pickup Points can improve attributes, skills, items, storage, and unlock system functions 2 18 34.
- Personally created objects cannot be recycled for new rewards, preventing infinite self-farming 3.
- He must personally touch discarded objects for the system to reward him 16.
- Repeatedly collecting from the same sources eventually produces diminished or no rewards, motivating him to seek new locations and people 34 39 46.
- His storage space expanded from 10 cubic meters to 1,000 cubic meters after spending 100,000 Pickup Points 1 18.
Haki
Ye Tong possesses all three forms of Haki.
- Armament Haki — Initially weak enough that its coating was barely perceptible, but later advanced enough to coat his body, reinforce his swords, and strike Logia users such as Kuzan 3 25.
- Conqueror’s Haki — Initially unusable despite acquiring copies through pickups. It became usable after Dragon recognized Ye Tong’s leadership; Ye Tong used it to incapacitate Ghost Bear and overwhelm weaker opponents in groups 7 10 14.
- Observation Haki — Obtained from Kuzan’s discarded fruit core after Ye Tong defeated him at the Marine training ground 25.
Swordsmanship
Ye Tong combines scavenged swordsmanship knowledge, high physical attributes, and Haki reinforcement.
- Uses two-sword techniques with Falling Rain and Spirit Echo, including Two-Sword Style: First Form, Crosscutting Waterwheel 31.
- Developed One-Sword Style: Birdsong, which he used with Muramasa to kill a Sea King 37.
- Can use Soru and Geppo to create explosive movement during sword combat 31 37.
- His Swordsmanship rose from Beginner Swordsmanship to at least Lv. 7 before Zephyr’s Autumn Swallow reward added another +8 3 32 34.
Six Powers
Ye Tong has acquired two of the Six Powers.
- Geppo — Learned after collecting Garp’s Sea King kill and replicated after witnessing Garp use it once 19.
- Soru — Obtained through scavenging and used to overwhelm Gion, Smoker, and Kuzan with sudden bursts of speed 29 30 31.
- Can maintain Geppo while using Soru, though extended use rapidly drains his stamina 37.
Life Source
Life Source is a substance extracted from the remains of enormous creatures.
- Immediately restores fatigue, soreness, and physical weakness when consumed 38.
- Increases vitality, metabolism, and the health of newly generated cells 19.
- Gradually raises Ye Tong’s base attributes and Digestion beyond what his normal pickups account for 46.
- Ye Tong considers its potential effect comparable to an immortality medicine 19.
Myriad Worlds Shop
After spending 200,000 Pickup Points, Ye Tong unlocked the Myriad Worlds Shop 34.
- Offers items including random Devil Fruits, Haki Enhancement Cards, Sharingan, Eight Gates, and Imperial Arms 34.
- Its prices are extremely high, giving Ye Tong further reason to pursue new sources of Pickup Points 34.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Muramasa — Supreme Grade Blade obtained from Zephyr’s discarded Autumn Swallow; used to kill a Sea King in its first recorded battle 34 37.
- Falling Rain — Great Grade Blade obtained from Dragon’s discarded short blade; its water-like effect cleans blood from the blade 11 12.
- Spirit Echo — Great Grade Blade obtained from Garp’s discarded broken sword 28.
- Portable Space — Thought-controlled storage dimension with a 1,000-cubic-meter capacity 18.
- Life Source — Regenerative and attribute-enhancing substance gained from Sea King corpses 19 37 46.
- Broom and garbage bags — Cleaning tools used to present his system ability as an unusual Devil Fruit power 21.
Relationships
- Monkey D. Luffy — Self-appointed older brother. Ye Tong challenged Luffy to become no weaker than him within seven years before leaving with Garp 4 18.
- Portgas D. Ace — Self-appointed older brother; Ye Tong defeated Ace, Luffy, and Sabo before using their hidden treasure to secure their acceptance 4.
- Sabo — Self-appointed older brother; initially suspicious of Ye Tong’s motives but accepted the arrangement after Ye Tong threatened to expose the boys’ treasure 4.
- Monkey D. Dragon — Dragon pledged allegiance after accepting Ye Tong’s social ideals and asked him to become the movement’s leader. Ye Tong later directed Dragon to establish a base and preserve Ohara’s books 10 27.
- Monkey D. Garp — Master and powerful patron. Garp brought Ye Tong into the Marines and eventually became his master in exchange for allowing him freedom to clean wherever he wanted 17 28.
- Hina — Navigator and later first mate of Ye Tong’s warship. She is protective of him, handles the ship’s operations, and follows him closely during island operations 35 37 45.
- Gion — Guide and fellow Marine swordswoman. Ye Tong’s gratitude and teasing were repeatedly misread by Gion as romantic pursuit 22 29.
- Tsuru — Senior Marine who recognized Ye Tong’s cleaning ability as useful and assigned him to the Cleaning Department, though she remained suspicious of his hidden strength 21.
- Carotell — Director of the Navy Cleaning Department and Ye Tong’s initial Marine superior; he came to regard Ye Tong as the department’s “lucky star” 22 30.
- Zephyr — Supportive Marine mentor figure who repeatedly tried to recruit Ye Tong, later appointed him a colonel and supplied his warship, mission, and Autumn Swallow 26 34.
- Kuzan — Rival and occasional target of Ye Tong’s criticism. Ye Tong defeated him twice and pushed him to take his training and concept of justice more seriously 25 31.
- Brook — A defeated pursuer whom Ye Tong redirected by revealing that Laboon was alive; Ye Tong dismissed him as useless because he could not produce more trash 48.
