Background / History

Whitebeard was the long-serving captain and father figure of the Whitebeard Pirates. He built his crew around chosen family, referring to its members as his sons and protecting them with exceptional devotion. His white crescent-shaped mustache became his defining visual symbol, while his reputation as the world’s strongest man made his crew one of the most feared forces in the New World 4 22.

When Yake became infamous for killing a Celestial Dragon, Whitebeard admired the newcomer’s audacity rather than condemning it. He ordered Marco to aid Yake if the Marines pursued him, calling Yake a gutsy young pirate 4.

Duel with Yake

Yake deliberately approached the Moby Dick to measure himself against Whitebeard. Whitebeard personally accepted the challenge, refusing Marco’s offer to fight in his place. Their Conqueror’s Haki clash incapacitated weaker crew members before the duel escalated into a contest between Yake’s lightning and Whitebeard’s Tremor-Tremor Fruit 22.

Whitebeard endured lightning attacks, shattered Yake’s Super Railgun Barrage, and exploited Yake’s distraction to knock him unconscious. After Marshall D. Teach murdered Thatch and stole the Dark-Dark Fruit, Whitebeard sensed that Teach was unusually dangerous and warned Ace not to pursue him. Ace refused, believing that Teach had dishonored both Thatch and Whitebeard’s name. Whitebeard ultimately allowed Ace to leave, recognizing the sincerity of his son’s devotion 48 50.

Marineford War

Whitebeard led his forty-three allied ships to Marineford to rescue Ace. He opened the battle by creating massive tsunamis with the Tremor-Tremor Fruit, forcing Aokiji to use Ice Age to protect the island 95.

Once Ace was freed, Whitebeard ordered every member of his crew to retreat safely to the New World. Choosing to remain behind, he declared himself a remnant of the old era and fought the Marine leadership alongside Yake 102 103.

Yake later had Luo temporarily treat Whitebeard’s accumulated internal damage so that their final duel would not be decided against a terminally ill opponent. Whitebeard fought with full resolve, but his illness and the strain of his own power steadily weakened him 104 105.

Yake mortally wounded Whitebeard with a Super Railgun through the chest. Before dying, Whitebeard publicly confirmed that the One Piece is real. He died standing while holding Murakumogiri; Reiju subsequently extracted his Tremor-Tremor Fruit power into an apple 106.

Encounter with the Roger Pirates

During an earlier era, Whitebeard encountered Yake after Yake joined the Roger Pirates. Whitebeard and Yake fought for four days amid a larger three-day conflict between their crews. Their battle devastated an uninhabited island, but Yake’s recovery and endurance gradually gave him the advantage 131 132.

Roger ended the fight before the island was destroyed. Afterward, Whitebeard, Roger, and Yake drank together, and Whitebeard acknowledged Yake as a formidable opponent—more troublesome than Golden Lion 132.
