Background
Monet and her younger sister Sugar lose their family during a war on a North Blue island. While escaping the pillaging soldiers, Monet carries Sugar, reassures her despite her own fear, and shields her from soldiers who corner them in an alley 61.
Adams incapacitates nearly every invading soldier with Conqueror’s Haki and offers the sisters safety and a place among his companions. Monet consults Sugar rather than deciding for her, and the two accept his offer together 61. After Adams effortlessly defeats Doflamingo soon afterward, Monet’s admiration for him takes on an almost religious intensity 62.
Appearance
Monet has long, wavy grass-green hair and emerald-green eyes. She is described as petite and gentle in bearing; she later wears glasses while working and training 91 225.
- Long green hair, often shown flowing amid lightning 169
- Emerald-green eyes 61
- Slender build 140
- Uses glasses in later appearances 225
Personality
Monet is protective, conscientious, and highly respectful toward Adams. Even as a frightened child, she prioritizes Sugar’s safety; as an officer, she consistently seeks to prove that she is useful rather than burdensome 61 191.
Her failures tend to become motivation. After being struck down repeatedly by the Yamato replica, she continues requesting another attempt; after struggling against Tokikake and Doflamingo, she commits herself to increasingly severe training 91 110 191.
Monet’s devotion to Adams blends gratitude, romantic affection, and worship. His praise brings her intense happiness, while the prospect of disappointing him causes visible guilt and anxiety 140 141 191. In battle, however, she can be cold and decisive, killing severely injured enemies without hesitation 246.
Abilities & Skills
Rumble-Rumble Fruit
Monet is a Logia user who can generate, control, and transform into lightning. She combines the fruit with Armament Haki, causing her attacks to shift from blue to gold and gain substantial penetrative power 94 140.
- Can transform into lightning to evade physical attacks, including attacks from non-Haki users 110 140.
- Forms lightning weapons such as bows, arrows, and the Haki-infused Thunder Lance 164 169.
- Creates elemental lightning clones to mislead opponents during obscured or chaotic exchanges 169.
- Produces massive thunderclouds for sustained battlefield control and bombardment 202 216.
- Direct lightning attacks can be predicted or resisted by opponents with strong Observation or Armament Haki, requiring her to use traps and area attacks instead 110 140.
Lightning Techniques
- Charge Bullet — Golden lightning projectiles that detonate into paralyzing electric fields, limiting an opponent’s movement and ability to evade 140.
- Lightning Nova — A circular close-range shockwave of compressed lightning that combines defense, knockback, and paralysis 140.
- Thunderstorm Technique — Her strongest known offensive technique at the time of its creation: a compressed, Armament Haki-infused thunderball that unfolds into a massive lightning barrage 140 141.
- Thunder Lance — A golden lightning spear with enough piercing power to destroy Doflamingo’s Haki-coated Overheat whip 164.
- Ten Thousand Thunders — A large-scale thundercloud bombardment used against Aramaki’s life-draining millstone 216.
Haki
Monet awakened Observation Haki immediately after eating the Rumble-Rumble Fruit. Her perception later becomes powerful enough to detect numerous approaching combatants and identify an especially dangerous presence from afar 94 102.
- Uses Observation Haki to anticipate ambushes and track opponents across a battlefield 102 169.
- Infuses lightning attacks and physical strikes with Armament Haki 140 164.
- Her Armament Haki is tempered through repeated life-and-death training; by the Dressrosa conflict, it overwhelms the emergency Haki training of several Donquixote officers 191 246.
- Her lightning-enhanced kick breaks through Borsalino’s Armament Haki guard during the divided battlefield conflict 259.
Reflexes and Close-Quarters Combat
Before gaining a Devil Fruit, Monet possessed exceptional neural reaction speed. Her initial weakness was that her body could not execute movements as quickly as she could perceive danger 91.
- Passed Adams’s evasion test by dodging Thunder Bagua and countering with Shigan 94.
- Trains in direct Haki-coated fist-and-leg exchanges rather than relying exclusively on elemental evasion 191.
- Uses her elemental form to avoid attacks while maintaining mobility against stronger close-range opponents 110.
Bioelectric Communication
Monet can convert messages into bioelectric waves and transmit them directly into a target’s mind. This technique enables nearly delay-free long-distance coordination 223.
- Relays Vegapunk’s research request directly to Adams 223.
- Transmits mission orders to Baccarat, Koala, Sugar, and Ulti without conventional communications 223.
Relationships
- Adams — Savior, captain, mentor, and later husband. Monet’s devotion to him grows from gratitude into romantic and near-religious worship; she trains obsessively to remain useful to him 61 191 208 225.
- Sugar — Younger sister. Monet protects Sugar during their escape from the war-torn town and asks for her consent before accepting Adams’s offer 61.
- Hina — Fellow officer and combat partner. The two jointly block King Ramen’s escape and combine lightning with blue flames to kill him and annihilate his remaining soldiers 99 105.
- Stella — Training partner after Monet gains the Rumble-Rumble Fruit; both are paired to develop their new abilities through combat 94.
- Koala — Subordinate and companion during the Punk Hazard operation. Monet helps lead Koala away from Foolshout Island after she learns the truth about Fisher Tiger’s death 202.
- Doflamingo — Major adversary. Monet repeatedly humiliates and wounds him during the Minion Island conflict, ultimately outmaneuvering his clone-and-ambush tactics 164 169.
- Borsalino — Opponent during the Vegapunk rescue and later world conflict. Monet prevents his initial retreat with a lightning arrow, then later breaks his Haki guard with a kick 201 259.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Recruitment and Early Training
After joining Adams with Sugar, Monet witnesses his overwhelming defeat of Doflamingo and becomes determined to grow stronger under his guidance 61 62. Her first major training arc centers on surviving Yamato replica’s Thunder Bagua, which reveals her unusual perception and resilience 91.
She completes the test by evading the attack and striking the replica with Shigan. Adams rewards her with the Rumble-Rumble Fruit, and she unexpectedly awakens Observation Haki upon eating it 94.
Flower Country Conflict
Monet fights beside Hina to prevent King Ramen from fleeing the Flower Country battlefield. After his false surrender, they kill him with a combined lightning-and-flame attack, then unleash a larger assault against the remaining enemy forces 99 105.
When powerful Marine forces approach, Monet’s Observation Haki identifies their arrival before the rest of the battlefield receives confirmation. She launches a compressed lightning sphere as a warning signal 102.
Minion Island and Dressrosa Battles
Monet initially cannot defeat Rear Admiral Tokikake because his Armament Haki can resist her Logia attacks. Adams reassures her that the setback does not invalidate her progress, prompting her to resolve to train harder 110.
During the conflict with the Donquixote Family, Monet destroys Doflamingo’s Overheat with Thunder Lance, ignores Pica’s attempted intervention, and later counters Doflamingo’s own clone tactics with an elemental clone and omnidirectional lightning 164 169. In Dressrosa, she kills Machvise, Jora, Buffalo, and Señor Pink with Haki-infused lightning before turning toward the final battlefield 246.
Vegapunk Rescue
Monet serves as part of the force delaying Borsalino while Adams’s team infiltrates Punk Hazard. She intercepts Borsalino’s attempted escape, later covers the retreat with thunderclouds and lightning, and brings Koala through Hyperspace to reunite with the crew 201 202.
Scientific and Military Support
By the artificial-soldier project, Monet has become a key communications link for Adams’s organization. Her bioelectric telepathy allows her to deliver Vegapunk’s requests and coordinate distant teams immediately 223.
During the later war, she counters Borsalino’s light barrage with golden lightning, closes the distance in elemental form, and drives him into a fortress with a Haki-coated kick 259.
Trivia
- Monet’s exceptional reaction speed was identified before she received the Rumble-Rumble Fruit 91.
- She initially viewed failure against Yamato’s replica as evidence that she had disappointed Adams, but his reassurance became the basis for her persistence 91.
- Her Charge Bullet was specifically designed to counter opponents who rely on Observation Haki to evade predictable lightning attacks 140.
- Monet’s lightning is commonly depicted as golden after being infused with Armament Haki 140 164.
