Background

Lafitte served as sheriff of Pejella, a border town in the Palermo Kingdom. His reputation rested on exceptionally violent law enforcement: he believed that criminals who ignored the rules could only be controlled through pain severe enough to make both them and bystanders remember “order.” His methods repeatedly brought him into conflict with local officials. 34

After pursuing a handbag thief through the market, Lafitte recognized the man was feigning remorse while reaching for a concealed dagger. He responded by crippling the thief with precise cane strikes before returning the stolen bag to its owner; the victim fled in fear of Lafitte as well. 34

A senior official condemned Lafitte publicly while secretly profiting from the thief’s crimes. The official mobilized roughly five hundred border soldiers to expel and eliminate Lafitte, but Lafitte incapacitated the entire force in less than fifteen minutes. The official then ordered a false report portraying Lafitte as a violent criminal driven out by the kingdom’s soldiers. 35
