Background / History

Robin grew up isolated on Ohara. Her mother left when she was two, instructing her to remain with her uncle’s family so she could be found upon returning; the household routinely neglected and starved her. Other children called her a monster because of her Devil Fruit ability, and Robin learned to endure mistreatment without resisting or seeking help. 2 3 8

She first met Adams when he intervened as children stoned her in an alley. Unlike the others, he reacted to her ability with curiosity rather than fear. Their shared interest in the Tree of Knowledge and its books quickly formed the basis of their friendship. 2

Over the following year, Adams regularly brought Robin food and challenged her habit of forcing an unhappy smile. After gaining his Devil Fruit, he used a “friendly discussion” with her uncle and aunt to bring her into his home; by the time she was eight, their relationship had become that of family. 3 6

Robin earned her scholar’s badge at the Tree of Knowledge and immediately declared her desire to research the Void Century and the Poneglyphs. Dr. Clover’s terrified reaction deeply upset her, but did not diminish her resolve. 7

During the Buster Call, Robin spent time hiding with Jaguar D. Saul, reunited with Olvia and the scholars, and was rejected from Ohara’s evacuation ship by frightened civilians. She values sincere happiness over empty performances. Adams’s criticism of her forced smile stayed with her; she later repeats the lesson to Saul, arguing that people should laugh because they are happy rather than pretend happiness through laughter. 3 8
