Background

Hiruzen Sarutobi initially approached Tsunade because Fang Xu’s family was identified as a Senju branch. He hoped she would use her status as Hashirama’s granddaughter to draw Fang Xu away from Hatake Sakumo’s influence. Tsunade rejected the political scheme, agreeing only to evaluate the child and warning Hiruzen not to exploit a six-year-old in factional struggles. 26 27

Although she initially refused to accept Fang Xu as a formal disciple, Tsunade recognized his Senju heritage and was reminded of Tobirama by his appearance and demeanor. She gave him the Shadow Clone Technique and Water Release: Water Wave Technique, offered the Senju Residence and Ninja Hospital as places of refuge, and asked him to call her “Sister Tsunade.” 29 42
