Background

Hiruzen Sarutobi initially approached Tsunade because Fang Xu’s family was identified as a Senju branch. He hoped she would use her status as Hashirama’s granddaughter to draw Fang Xu away from Hatake Sakumo’s influence. Tsunade rejected the political scheme, agreeing only to evaluate the child and warning Hiruzen not to exploit a six-year-old in factional struggles. 26 27

Although she initially refused to accept Fang Xu as a formal disciple, Tsunade recognized his Senju heritage and was reminded of Tobirama by his appearance and demeanor. She gave him the Shadow Clone Technique and Water Release: Water Wave Technique, offered the Senju Residence and Ninja Hospital as places of refuge, and asked him to call her “Sister Tsunade.” 29 42

Fang Xu’s deliberate reasons for studying Medical Ninjutsu—improving Chakra Control, understanding anatomy, and avoiding self-inflicted damage from body-tempering—convinced Tsunade to become his teacher. Tsunade had intended to leave Konoha after six months of teaching Fang Xu, believing that trauma from Dan’s death and her hemophobia made her unfit for frontline work. However, the escalating war and Fang Xu’s vulnerability to Danzo’s retaliation compelled her to remain involved. She asked Jiraiya and Orochimaru to protect Fang Xu if she left. 71

When Fang Xu requested early graduation, Tsunade initially objected because of his age and her memories of Nawaki’s death. Tsunade is blunt, impatient with bureaucracy, and openly fond of drinking. She defends neglecting paperwork while drinking, reacts sharply to disrespect or evasiveness, and frequently uses physical reprimands—such as pinching Fang Xu’s cheek or twisting his ear—when worried about him. 29 51 133

She deeply distrusts Konoha’s political leadership. Tsunade believes Danzo and possibly Hiruzen may be connected to Nawaki’s death, Dan’s death, and the decline of the Senju main branch; she is especially hostile to attempts to turn Fang Xu’s bloodline into a political asset. 70 104 207
