Background

Yang Yi grew up in Yang Family Hollow after losing his parents; villagers claimed they had been eaten by a mountain tiger. Although he inherited their house, he lived under the care of his uncle’s household and endured poverty, hunger, and his aunt’s resentment over the cost of raising him. His uncle, Yang Yong, and Yang Ya generally treated him kindly, with Yang Ya frequently saving food for him. 1

A year before the story, Yang Yi rescued a white fox in the mountains. When he later tried to send the fox away rather than let his aunt sell it, the animal revealed herself as Yuejian, a fox demon whose life he had saved. Yuejian gave him cultivation knowledge, the Body Tempering Technique, and a cloth pouch containing an inheritance that could only be opened once his qi and blood became strong enough. 1 2

Yang Yi discovered that the golden light within his consciousness protected the damaged Source Crystal of his Mortal Realm. The golden light repaired injuries caused by his intense training, while the Source Crystal gradually recovered and later enabled him to influence natural lands of creation. 2 18

After Black Wind Stronghold threatened Yang Family Hollow, Yang Yi killed Tie Ying and several bandits while rescuing the injured Qiao Wuwang. Concerned that the stronghold would retaliate against his relatives, he accepted Qiao Wuwang’s offer to bring his family to Qiao Family Fort. 5 6 7

Appearance

Yang Yi is a tall, broad-boned youth with a sturdy frame shaped by years of mountain travel. His early poverty left him thin, but regular food, cultivation resources, and body tempering later make him visibly tall and powerfully built. 1 44

Personality

Yang Yi is practical, observant, and unusually composed for his age. He habitually assesses danger before acting: he concealed his strength from Tie Ying rather than provoke Black Wind Stronghold prematurely, declined Shen Qian’s proposed duel over Cuiwei Residence, and later altered battle plans when circumstances made a direct assault more advantageous. 5 10 29

His compassion is most evident in his treatment of vulnerable people. He refuses to sell Yuejian despite his family’s poverty, risks himself to protect Yang Ya, treats Qiao Wuwang after saving him, and forgives his aunt for her past harshness because she and his uncle raised him after his parents’ deaths. 1 5 6 13

Although ambitious about cultivation, Yang Yi does not pursue power solely for himself. He uses his rise within the Qiao Household to secure housing, a shop, and cultivation opportunities for his family, then begins teaching Yang Yong the Body Tempering Technique. 16 17

His directness can be socially awkward. He unintentionally offends Shen Qian through casual behavior, makes an overly dramatic declaration of loyalty before a mission, and responds to Golden Saber Hall’s assassination attempt by criticizing its lack of manners. 21 22 36

Yuejian’s sixty-four-movement Body Tempering Technique is Yang Yi’s foundational art. Each movement has a matching breathing method that strengthens the body and refines qi and blood. 2

Yang Yi joins Lü E’s force against Clearwind City’s major Lineages. When the party is trapped, he assumes command, protects his allies with Mountain Suppression, kills multiple Lan Blood leaders, and turns a planned escape into a successful counteroffensive. 27 28 29 30

His performance earns formal recognition: Qiao Yaoyao credits him with leading the group to kill six Lan Blood enemies, capture two, and avert severe losses for the Qiao Household. 33

Falling Moon Market

Assigned to recover Falling Moon Market from Black Wind Stronghold, Yang Yi uses Golden Saber Hall’s betrayal to identify its allegiance, kills Shi Zhongtang, subdues Lu Qianshan, and helps seize the occupied stronghold. He then distributes spoils generously and compensates fallen soldiers’ families at double the usual rate. 36 41 47

Falling Moon Cave and Hu Zhang

Lu Qianshan leads Yang Yi to Falling Moon Cave, where Moonlight Essence can sharpen weapons and grant them blood-breaking power. Yang Yi uses the Source Crystal to accelerate this process, creating two Divine Weapons and beginning serious saber-and-sword training. 43 44 45 47

When Hu Zhang attacks Falling Moon Market, Yang Yi confronts the True Blood cultivator while still a Lan Blood martial artist. His Moonlight Essence Sword destroys Hu Zhang’s spear but shatters under a direct True Blood strike; Yang Yi continues the battle with the Moonlight Essence Blade. 50
