Background / History

Xiao Yan was once regarded as the Xiao Family’s genius, but his cultivation ceased progressing at the third stage of Dou Qi for three years. During this period, he endured ridicule within the clan while Xun’er remained one of his few consistent sources of comfort and encouragement 33.

When Qing Luo arrives at the Xiao Family, he reveals that the declining family is in fact descended from one of the Ancient Eight Great Emperor Clans. Qing Luo also identifies Xiao Yan as the carrier of the Xiao Clan’s Tou She Ancient God Jade and, later, as the Dou Qi Continent’s Child of Destiny 35 37.

Qing Luo relocates the entire Xiao Family to the Misty Cloud Sect’s Life-and-Death Gate and forces the family into the Emperor Alliance, offering resources and three years to rise to the level of a Central Plains faction 37 38. Xiao Yan initially distrusts Qing Luo because of Xun’er’s capture, but reassesses him after witnessing the protection and opportunities given to the Xiao Family 38 39.

Qing Luo discovers that Xiao Yan’s black thumb ring contains the weakened remnant soul of the Dou Zun alchemist Yao Chen. Xiao Yan is proud and highly sensitive to humiliation. Nalan Yanran’s intended annulment angers him chiefly because a public rejection would disgrace both himself and Xiao Zhan before the Xiao Family 33.

He is also emotionally loyal. Even after learning of Xun’er’s Gu Clan identity and possible mission to locate the Xiao Clan jade, he cannot dismiss the warmth and confidence she gave him during his years of stagnation 36 37.
