Background / History

In his previous life, Tang San was an overlooked Tang Sect outer disciple. He stole the sect’s Mysterious Heaven Treasure Record before transmigrating to the Douluo Continent. His memories of being mistreated and denied resources, followed by poverty and Tang Hao’s scoldings in his new life, fuel his desire to rise above others. 9

Tang San arrived at Nuoding Academy with Old Jack. The gatekeeper’s contempt for their poor clothing provoked him into preparing a Hidden Weapon, but Lu Shiyuan intervened before he could attack. Yu Xiaogang then approached the dispute, beginning his mentorship of Tang San. 9

After recovering from Lu Shiyuan’s beating, Tang San accompanied Yu Xiaogang to the Soul Hunting Forest and gained his first Soul Ring from a Mandala Snake, continuing the path Lu Shiyuan recognizes from the original timeline. 17

His reputation at Nuoding Academy deteriorated from his first day, leaving few students outside Dorm Seven willing to associate with him. Over the following years, he repeatedly challenged Lu Shiyuan after seeing Xiao Wu behave affectionately toward him, despite consistently losing. After his time at Nuoding Academy, Tang San traveled to Suotuo City to attend Shrek Academy. He praised the school using information supplied by Yu Xiaogang, including its graduates’ prospects of becoming imperial Viscounts, but Xiao Wu rejected his attempts to discuss their continued association as classmates. 40 41

At Shrek, Tang San initially found himself socially isolated and reluctant to alienate Dai Mubai while already opposing Lu Shiyuan. Although he received a monthly Spirit Hall subsidy of ten Gold Soul Coins as a Soul Grandmaster, the expense of making Hidden Weapons left him with limited savings. 56

Personality

Tang San is proud, stubborn, and intensely sensitive to humiliation. He resents the social advantages enjoyed by Lu Shiyuan and Xiao Wu, whose wealth, appearance, and treatment at the academy contrast with his own impoverished upbringing. 9

He is fiercely loyal to Yu Xiaogang, whose attention and theoretical knowledge gave him affection and validation he lacked growing up. Although Lu Shiyuan’s criticisms briefly make him doubt his teacher, Tang San quickly returns to defending Yu Xiaogang. 12 13

When angered, Tang San is willing to employ covert and disproportionate methods. He prepares to use a Hidden Weapon on the gatekeeper and later fires a Sleeve Arrow at Lu Shiyuan after losing an argument. 9 13

His attraction to Xiao Wu repeatedly overrides his judgment. He interprets their arrival in Suotuo City as evidence that she wants to remain his classmate, despite her open hostility, and initially underestimates how far her cultivation has surpassed his own. Enrollment at Nuoding Academy

Tang San’s arrival at the academy establishes his antagonism with Lu Shiyuan. Humiliated by the gatekeeper’s class prejudice, he prepares a Hidden Weapon before Lu intervenes; he then meets Yu Xiaogang and becomes interested in Xiao Wu. 9

Conflict with Lu Shiyuan

After Yu Xiaogang attempts to recruit Lu Shiyuan, Tang San defends his teacher and challenges Lu. When Yu Xiaogang prevents a life-or-death duel, Tang San fires a Sleeve Arrow in anger. Lu retaliates with Time Blade Pierce, overwhelms him physically, and leaves him unconscious. 12 13 14

Dean Chen arranges treatment for Tang San at Yu Xiaogang’s expense. The beating also draws out Tang Hao, whom Xiao Feiyu defeats as part of Lu Shiyuan’s preparations against retaliation. Defeating Tang San completes a system mission that rewards Lu Shiyuan with a Soul Bone. 14 15 16

Lu Shiyuan later recognizes that Tang San’s grudge will make reconciliation unlikely and begins targeting opportunities that could strengthen him. Xiao Feiyu initially warns Lu against killing Tang San because he remains important to her plans. At Suotuo City, Yun Qingluo relaxes the restrictions, permitting Lu to take his opportunities and allies provided he does not kill him. 20 46

First Soul Ring and Academy Rivalry

Tang San obtains a Mandala Snake Soul Ring and uses Blue Silver Entanglement to defeat Xiao Chenyu. Emboldened, he challenges Lu Shiyuan again, but Xiao Wu accepts the fight in Lu’s place and decisively defeats him with her improved Waist Bow. 17 18 19

His losses do not end the rivalry. Throughout the remaining academy years, Xiao Wu’s affection for Lu Shiyuan repeatedly provokes Tang San into further unsuccessful challenges. Because Lu rarely displays his Martial Soul publicly during this period, Tang San mistakenly assumes that their cultivation levels remain relatively close. 40 50

Shrek Academy Admission and Zhao Wuji’s Challenge

Tang San passes Shrek Academy’s registration with Blue Silver Grass, two yellow Soul Rings, and level-29 Soul Power. His attempt to impress Xiao Wu is undercut when Lu Shiyuan reveals that he has already reached level fifty. 47 49 50

After watching Lu Shiyuan fight Zhao Wuji, Tang San requests his own match. He expects to use Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track and Hidden Weapons to surpass Lu’s performance and attract Xiao Wu’s attention. Instead, Zhao Wuji retains his Martial Soul Avatar and overwhelms him. His attempted use of Dragon Whisker Needles is exposed, and the needles are confiscated. 53 54 56

Tang San awakens with his right hand and left leg heavily bandaged and believes their bones have been broken. Dai Mubai delivers dinner and explains that the academy hired a Healing Soul Master for five Gold Soul Coins. Tang San reluctantly reimburses him while hiding his resentment. 56

Great Soul Arena Training

Flender assigns the students, except Ning Rongrong, the task of earning Silver Soul Fighter badges within a year. Tang San initially thinks the requirement sounds manageable, but is surprised by Dai Mubai’s poor accumulated score. Xiao Wu rejects his offer to form a 2v2 team because their different cultivation realms would place them against Soul Ancestor opponents. 60

Tang San instead partners with Ma Hongjun against two level-25 twins. Although Blue Silver Entanglement initially restrains both opponents, Ma’s Phoenix Fire Line burns through the vines. The pair abandon coordinated tactics and win through their superior cultivation, drawing boos from spectators dissatisfied with the match. 62

Canghui Academy Confrontation

During the journey to the Star Dou Forest, Dai Mubai and Ma Hongjun provoke Canghui Academy’s students at an inn. Tang San and Oscar join their side, and the Shrek students defeat the opposing students before being beaten by their defense-type Soul King teacher. Lu Shiyuan stays out of the fight and prevents Zhao Wuji from intervening. 69 70

By this point, Oscar has explained Xiao Wu’s disgust toward Tang San’s Hidden Weapons, prompting him to avoid using them in front of her. This limits his options during the encounter. Star Dou Forest and the Lost Eight Spider Lances

A dispute over Oscar’s third Soul Ring escalates when Tang San attacks and injures Meng Yiran without obtaining her agreement to his proposed contest. Lu Shiyuan negotiates compensation for her lost opportunity and requires Tang San to apologize. Unsupported by Zhao Wuji or the other students, Tang San bows to her while privately blaming everyone who failed to defend him. 81 82

Tang San subsequently announces that he has reached level thirty. When the group encounters an over-two-thousand-year-old Man Faced Demon Spider intended for Meng Yiran, he argues that she cannot absorb it and demands the beast for himself. Lu Shiyuan instead arranges for Dugu Bo to pressure the spider into maintaining its avatar state, reducing its cultivation enough for Meng Yiran to absorb its ring safely. 83 87

Tang San tries once more to stop Meng Yiran, offering her a favor in exchange for the spider. Lu Shiyuan physically restrains him while she kills it. Dugu Bo, the Dragon Duke, and Snake Granny then erect a Soul Power barrier to prevent interference during her absorption. Before the expedition ends, Tang San reluctantly accepts a different Man Faced Demon Spider aged fifteen hundred years. Absorbing its ring raises him to level thirty-one, but grants no External Soul Bone. He outwardly appears pleased with his advancement while concealing an intensified hatred of Lu Shiyuan. 89
