Background / History
Lu Yun rose through Jichuntang Hall over eight years, advancing from menial worker to courtyard guard and eventually becoming the guards' manager. By his early thirties, he had reached the Nourishing Flesh Realm, though his forced breakthrough through a Foundation-Nourishing Pill weakened his foundation. 5
After Chen Chong survived the Mount Dingjun expedition and was promoted to courtyard guard, Chief Steward Yuan Zhiwu ordered Lu Yun to familiarize him with the grounds and teach him Jichuntang's inherited techniques. Lu Yun instead withheld instruction, apparently expecting deference or benefits. When Chen Chong demanded the manuals, Lu Yun tried to overpower him through a grip on the shoulder, only to be restrained and forced to yield the texts. 4
Lu Yun then used his authority over duty assignments to place Chen Chong on nearly continuous patrols. The arrangement inadvertently allowed Chen Chong to observe Chen Huaixu's alchemy and begin his rise as an alchemist. 5
Following his unsuccessful attempt to report Chen Chong for neglecting duty, Lu Yun eventually apologized in person. During the subsequent refugee-relief operation, he treated Chen Chong with marked respect before joining the guards' resistance to the disguised bandits and suffering a nonfatal chest injury. 7 10 11 12
Appearance
Lu Yun is a man in his early thirties with a solid, martial build.
- Square face and thick brows.
- Large-knuckled hands.
- His shoulders sway slightly when he walks. 4
- Usually wears a short brown jacket. For his apology visit to Chen Chong, he wears it more neatly than usual and carefully combs his hair. 10
Personality
Lu Yun is initially arrogant, resentful, and sensitive to status. He looks down on Chen Chong as a younger former laborer, uses seniority to deny him instruction, and attempts to burden him with excessive patrol duty. 4 5
His hostility is rooted partly in insecurity. Despite holding a higher realm, his unstable foundation prevents him from decisively overpowering Chen Chong, whose perfected techniques compensate for his lower cultivation. 5
As Chen Chong becomes a valued alchemist, Lu Yun recognizes the changed hierarchy. His attempt to report Chen for abandoning guard duty collapses when Yuan Zhiwu reveals that Chen Huaixu personally recruited him. Lu Yun later offers a nervous, sincere apology, which Chen Chong accepts without resentment. 7 10
His changed attitude remains evident during the refugee-relief operation: upon meeting Chen Chong's gaze, he immediately bends slightly at the waist and lowers his head with restrained respect. Despite his earlier pettiness toward Chen Chong, he also fulfills his protective duties by leading guards against the disguised attackers. 11 12
Power Progression
| Stage / Realm | Development and Evidence | Chapter(s) |
|---|---|---|
| Skin Tempering foundation | Initially described as possessing a Skin Tempering foundation, and Chen Chong assumes they share the same realm. His actual higher cultivation is clarified afterward. | 4 5 |
| Nourishing Flesh Realm | Had already forced a breakthrough using a Foundation-Nourishing Pill rewarded by Jichuntang Hall. Although the realm increases his strength and endurance, his unstable foundation prevents him from gaining the upper hand against Chen Chong's perfected techniques. No later advancement is directly established. | 5 |
Abilities & Skills
Nourishing Flesh Realm Cultivation
Lu Yun's true qi nourishes his blood and flesh, granting strength and endurance beyond the Skin Tempering Realm. 5
- He reached the realm through a Foundation-Nourishing Pill supplied by Jichuntang Hall.
- His forced advancement left his cultivation foundation unstable.
- This instability contributed to his inability to gain the advantage when grappling with Chen Chong. 5
Guard Leadership
As Jichuntang Hall's guard manager, Lu Yun oversees patrol assignments and can direct the hall's guards.
- Assigned Chen Chong to near-daily courtyard patrols. 5
- Helped distribute grain during Li Zhaoning's refugee-relief operation. 11
- Led guards against Yang He's disguised bandits but was knocked away by a heavy punch and incapacitated. 12
- Was entrusted by Yuan Zhiwu with introducing Chen Chong to the grounds and teaching the hall's inherited breathing method and techniques. The manuals he ultimately handed over were Fierce Tiger Force and Five Tiger Saber. 4
Relationships
- Chen Chong — Initially a hostile senior colleague who withheld techniques, attempted intimidation, and assigned excessive duties; later apologized after Chen's alchemical status surpassed his own. 4 5 7 10 His subsequent deferential greeting during the relief operation demonstrates the lasting change in their relationship. 11
- Yuan Zhiwu — His superior at Jichuntang Hall, who ordered him to guide Chen Chong. 4
- Zhao Da and Qian Hu — Fellow veteran courtyard guards and drinking companions; they stop supporting Lu Yun's complaints once Chen Chong becomes Chen Huaixu's apprentice. 7
- Chen Huaixu — Jichuntang's alchemist; Huaixu's recruitment of Chen Chong directly undermines Lu Yun's attempt to discipline him. 7
- Li Zhaoning — Commands Lu Yun during the refugee-relief operation, assigning him to distribute grain. 11
- Yang He's accomplices — Disguised attackers whom Lu Yun confronts during the relief operation. One strikes him heavily in the chest, sending him flying and temporarily removing him from the fight. 12
Story Role / Major Arcs
Conflict with Chen Chong
Lu Yun enters the story as Chen Chong's assigned guide at Jichuntang Hall. Rather than teach him, he tries to establish dominance and withholds the hall's manuals. Chen Chong physically counters him and takes the manuals without escalating the confrontation. 4
Lu Yun continues the conflict by arranging relentless patrol shifts. When Chen Chong enters the alchemy room under Chen Huaixu's patronage, Lu Yun tries to accuse him of neglecting duty, but Yuan Zhiwu dismisses the complaint immediately. 5 7
The punitive assignments exceed the hall's usual treatment of new guards: although new arrivals commonly endure frequent duty for ten days to half a month, Chen Chong remains on the roster every day after twelve days. Lu Yun's attempt to capitalize on his eventual absence also includes an accusation that Chen Chong disrespects his elders and will become difficult to restrain. 5 7
Reconciliation
After Chen Chong becomes known as “Alchemist Chen,” Lu Yun visits with wine and pastries to apologize for their earlier disputes. Chen Chong considers the old conflict insignificant and receives him courteously. 10
Lu Yun brings two jars of wine and a packet of pastries, addresses Chen Chong nervously as “Alchemist Chen,” and explicitly accepts fault. He stays for approximately an incense stick's burning time, drinks three bowls of tea, and speaks little before departing visibly relieved. 10
Refugee Relief and Bandit Ambush
Lu Yun assists Li Zhaoning's relief effort by distributing grain to refugees according to headcount. During Yang He's ambush, he leads several guards against disguised attackers but is struck down and temporarily loses the ability to fight. 11 12
Before the ambush, he stands with Yuan Zhiwu, Zhao Da, Qian Hu, and the other guards near the bridgehead, greeting Chen Chong with restrained deference. During the fighting, a heavy punch lands on his chest after only a few exchanges and sends him flying. The attackers inflict nonfatal injuries on the guards, incapacitating them rather than killing them while Yang He seeks a pill from Li Zhaoning's party. 11 12
Trivia
- Lu Yun's punitive patrol assignments unintentionally put Chen Chong near the alchemy room, creating the opportunity for Chen to learn furnace alchemy. 5
- His former drinking companions, Zhao Da and Qian Hu, become silent rather than endorse his complaints once they understand Chen Chong's importance as a future alchemist. 7
- His initial presentation emphasizes a Skin Tempering foundation, but the following chapter clarifies that he has already reached the Nourishing Flesh Realm through a pill-assisted breakthrough. 4 5
- The two manuals he reluctantly hands over become ingredients in Chen Chong's first martial-technique fusions: Tiger Roars Through the Mountains and Forests and Five Tigers Severing the Mountain Blade. 4
