Yuan Zhiwu is a man around fifty and of unremarkable height, but his composed presence makes him seem “like a deep well whose bottom could not be seen.” He favors refined but understated clothing and carries himself with deliberate calm. 4

Personality

Yuan is perceptive and pragmatic. After examining Chen Chong’s pulse and hearing his account of Mount Dingjun, he recognizes both the youth’s cultivation and the political usefulness of the rat demon’s corpse. Rather than treating Chen as a suspect in the deaths of the gathering party, he promotes him to courtyard guard. 4

He maintains a cold, restrained demeanor in ordinary dealings, but his attitude shifts when Chen Chong proves capable of refining high-quality Essence-Nourishing Pills. He openly acknowledges Chen as “Alchemist Chen,” watches a full refinement process with intense interest, and improves Chen’s profit-sharing arrangement. 9

Despite his authority within Jichuntang Hall, Yuan is visibly uneasy around Li Zhaoning. When she addresses him as “Uncle Yuan,” he answers that both he and the hall are her property. After she leaves the meeting arranging refugee relief, he releases a long breath and gives Chen Chong a bitter smile. 10

Yuan is also loyal and resolute in crisis. During Yang He’s ambush, he fights the bandit leader barehanded despite being injured and remains prepared to continue defending Li Zhaoning. 12

Flesh-Nourishing Realm Cultivation

Yuan possesses perfected Flesh-Nourishing Realm cultivation during the refugee-relief ambush. His cultivation is later identified as the Tendon-Tremor Realm. 12 21 28

Chen Chong later considers Li Zhiyi’s Tendon-Vibrating Stage cultivation to be about the same as Yuan’s, confirming this later assessment of his strength. Mount Dingjun Aftermath

Yuan receives Chen Chong’s report that the herb-gathering party was killed by a rat demon. After personally examining Chen’s cultivation, he accepts the explanation, approves the handling of the demon corpse, and promotes Chen to courtyard guard. 4

Rise of Alchemist Chen

When Lu Yun attempts to accuse Chen Chong of abandoning his guard post, Yuan dismisses the complaint after revealing that Chen Huaixu has taken Chen into the alchemy room. 7 At Chen Huaixu’s request, he subsequently approves the transfer of the former alchemy workshop to Chen Chong and arranges for it to be cleaned. 8 Later, Yuan is visibly impressed by Chen’s successful refinement of six flawless Essence-Nourishing Pills, appointing him to produce them and increasing his profit share by ten percent. 9

Refugee Relief and Bandit Ambush

Yuan summons Chen Chong to meet Li Zhaoning in his office, where she outlines the Li Family’s refugee-relief operation and provides the formula for the Illness-Repelling Essence Pill. She instructs them to gather outside the north gate at dawn the following day. 10

Yuan accompanies Li Zhaoning’s relief convoy, leading Jichuntang’s guards in crowd control while Chen Chong refines medicine for refugees. 11 When Yang He’s disguised bandits attack, Yuan duels Yang with his bare hands and continues protecting Li despite his injuries. 12

When Yang He pauses the duel to state his demands, Yuan retreats to Li Zhaoning’s side. After Yang threatens to take her into the mountains as security for the refinement of a Flesh-Regenerating Bone-Mending Pill, Yuan gathers force in his palms and remains prepared to stake his life on another clash. Li instead proposes that Chen Chong refine the medicine on the spot. 12

Later Cultivation Recognition

Yuan’s later cultivation is established indirectly during the Wang Zheng affair. Wang names him as having reached the Tendon-Tremor Realm, and Chen Chong subsequently uses Yuan’s strength as a point of comparison when assessing Li Zhiyi. These references update his cultivation beyond the perfected Flesh-Nourishing Realm demonstrated during the relief ambush. 12 21 28

• Yuan’s appreciation of Chen Chong’s Essence-Nourishing Pills briefly causes him to lose his usual composure, repeatedly examining and smelling one of the pills before regaining his restraint. 9
• Although he initially intimidates Chen Chong, their relationship changes rapidly once Chen’s alchemical value becomes clear. 4 9
• His delight at Chen Chong’s pills is partly tied to Jichuntang Hall’s reputation: he explains that the hall had previously purchased Essence-Nourishing Pills from other shops because Chen Huaixu was advanced in years. 9
