Background

Ma San controlled protection-fee collection on West Street through dozens of blade-wielding thugs. His gang was notorious for usury, extortion, and killing entire debtor families. His influence was reinforced by ties to northern smugglers and bandits, allowing him to operate with little fear of official consequences. 1 3

Behind his local operations, Ma San served as an intermediary between Zhao Dong and the Red Whale Gang. He handled illicit salt routes and planned to expand the arrangement into black-market sales of military supplies. A sheepskin waterway map concealed among his possessions recorded smuggling routes, secret trade sites, coded phrases, patrol routes, and supply stations. 7 12

Ma San was also linked to the White Horse Salt Gang, a powerful salt-trafficking organization with northern routes, intelligence networks, and a hidden outpost in Yin Mountain Ghost Market. Gang members recognized his personal “Ma” token and referred to him as Third Master. The gang had originated in a Ma clan village near White Horse Shoal. 80

Appearance

Ma San was a broad, powerfully built man with bronze skin and a scarred face. During his confrontation with Chen Mu, he wore a blue-cloth martial outfit and carried a curved saber. 5

Personality

Ma San was cruel, suspicious, and calculating. He recognized that Chen Mu’s Azure Dragon Martial Academy token offered temporary protection, so he avoided an immediate attack and instead exploited Chen Mu’s three-day assessment period to prepare retaliation. 6

He used threats against civilians as a deliberate means of coercion. His gang severely wounded Wang Hu, murdered Xi’er after her father warned Chen Mu, and threatened to sell A-Ning to the Pleasure Pavilion. 5 6

Despite his brutality, Ma San valued his own life over a killing blow. During his duel with Chen Mu, he hesitated when forced to choose between completing a slash and exposing himself to Chen Mu’s elbow strike; that hesitation allowed Chen Mu to kill him. 8

Story Role

Ma San becomes Chen Mu’s first major human antagonist after Huang Silang’s death. Chen Mu initially tries to buy time by demanding ten taels of unpaid meat money from him, but Ma San retaliates by attacking Chen Mu’s household and exploiting the uncertainty of Chen’s martial-academy assessment. 2 5 6

After Ma San’s men murder Xi’er and threaten A-Ning, Chen Mu abandons caution, advances to Body Tempering First Stage, and infiltrates Ma San’s Central Peace Street residence. There he discovers Ma San’s smuggling conspiracy with Zhao Dong and the Red Whale Gang. 6 7

Ma San initially gains the advantage in their saber duel, but Chen Mu accepts a severe waist wound to land a full-force elbow strike on Ma San’s head. Chen Mu then confirms the kill, loots the compound, burns the bodies, and plants “Red Whale” in blood to shift suspicion toward the rival gang. 8

Ma San’s death leaves behind the Waterway Map, draws Zhao Dong and the Red Whale Gang into open conflict, and sets off the larger struggle that continues to pursue Chen Mu. 11 12 13

His remaining gang members and strongholds subsequently became targets of both Chen Mu and the Red Whale Gang, which sought to erase witnesses while recovering the Waterway Map. The Red Whale Gang killed and disposed of men at several strongholds; Chen Mu reached another before its attackers and found Ma San’s surviving men still there. 14 15

Ma San’s martial inheritance also shaped Chen Mu’s later growth. Chen Mu fused the Black Tiger Blade Technique taken from his residence with the Ox-Slicing Saber Technique to create the Hundred-Slash Baleful Blade. Separately, Chen Mu received the related Black Tiger Baleful Heart Art as a Slaughter Register reward rather than finding it in Ma San’s compound; he later fused it with Rampaging Bull Force to form the Yin Extremity Profound Baleful Art. 8 9 13 34

Ma San’s posthumous influence extends to Yin Mountain Ghost Market, where Chen Mu uses the Waterway Map and Ma token to access White Salt Hall. There, Chen Mu and Qin Tieya recover Ma San’s hidden cache of nearly 5,000 taels, funding their infiltration of the Ghost Market auction. 80 81
