Background

Ma San controlled protection-fee collection on West Street through dozens of blade-wielding thugs. His gang was notorious for usury, extortion, and killing entire debtor families. His influence was reinforced by ties to northern smugglers and bandits, allowing him to operate with little fear of official consequences. 1 3

Behind his local operations, Ma San served as an intermediary between Zhao Dong and the Red Whale Gang. He handled illicit salt routes and planned to expand the arrangement into black-market sales of military supplies. A sheepskin waterway map concealed among his possessions recorded smuggling routes, secret trade sites, coded phrases, patrol routes, and supply stations. 7 12

Appearance

Ma San was a broad, powerfully built man with bronze skin and a scarred face. During his confrontation with Chen Mu, he wore a blue-cloth martial outfit and carried a curved saber. 5

Personality

He used threats against civilians as a deliberate means of coercion. His gang severely wounded Wang Hu, murdered Xi’er after her father warned Chen Mu, and threatened to sell A-Ning to the Pleasure Pavilion. 5 6

Despite his brutality, Ma San valued his own life over a killing blow. During his duel with Chen Mu, he hesitated when forced to choose between completing a slash and exposing himself to Chen Mu’s elbow strike; that hesitation allowed Chen Mu to kill him. 8

Ma San initially gains the advantage in their saber duel, but Chen Mu accepts a severe waist wound to land a full-force elbow strike on Ma San’s head. Chen Mu then confirms the kill, loots the compound, burns the bodies, and plants “Red Whale” in blood to shift suspicion toward the rival gang. 8

Ma San’s death leaves behind the Waterway Map, draws Zhao Dong and the Red Whale Gang into open conflict, and sets off the larger struggle that continues to pursue Chen Mu. 11 12 13
