Background / History

A-Ning found Chen Mu after he was wounded by an arrow and fell into a snowy ravine. Despite her frail condition, she dragged him through the snowstorm and secured help from a passing merchant caravan, saving his life. The exposure and exhaustion left her with a lasting cold affliction and recurring fevers. 2

She claims to be a famine refugee from the north seeking a place to settle, but Chen Mu notices that her concealed gold and jade ornaments do not fit that story. He chooses not to press her about her past. 2

During the months after his rescue, A-Ning and Chen Mu privately became husband and wife. They have not held formal wedding rites because Chen Mu's lowly butcher registration prevents him from publicly marrying her as he wishes. 2

Her cold illness leaves her largely bedridden during winter, though Chen Mu's ginseng and costly restorative medicine substantially improve her condition. 2 3 12

When conflict with the Red Whale Gang escalates, Chen Mu moves her to Granny Li's house near the City God Temple for safety and gives her the white half of the Yin-Yang Twin-Heart Jade. 19 20 After Chen Mu returns from the ruined temple expedition, he finds Granny Li's home ransacked and A-Ning missing, with her medicine and clothing left behind. 33
