Background / History

A-Ning found Chen Mu after he was wounded by an arrow and fell into a snowy ravine. Despite her frail condition, she dragged him through the snowstorm and secured help from a passing merchant caravan, saving his life. The exposure and exhaustion severely aggravated her underlying cold affliction, leaving her with recurring fevers and weakness. 2 58 71

She initially claims to be a famine refugee from the north seeking a place to settle, but Chen Mu notices that her concealed gold and jade ornaments do not fit that story. He chooses not to press her about her past. 2

After returning safely to Everlasting Prosperity Town, she reveals that her family name is Song and that she is from Youzhou. Her father was a clerk in the Protector-General's Office who was falsely imprisoned after offending a superior; the family property was confiscated, and A-Ning became separated from her mother and younger brother while fleeing bandits. She concealed both her name and background because she feared bringing their enemies' attention upon Chen Mu. 90

During the months after his rescue, A-Ning and Chen Mu privately became husband and wife. They have not held formal wedding rites because Chen Mu's lowly butcher registration initially prevented him from publicly marrying her as he wished. 2 After Chen Mu receives official status as a Patrol Inspector, he begins preparing to secure a residence and formally marry her. With a dangerous mission approaching, he arranges an evening wedding, though the rites have not yet been shown to take place. 91 108 169 170 171

Her cold illness leaves her largely bedridden during winter, though Chen Mu's ginseng and costly restorative medicine substantially improve her condition. 2 3 12

When conflict with the Red Whale Gang escalates, Chen Mu moves her to Granny Li's house near the City God Temple for safety and gives her the white half of the Yin-Yang Twin-Heart Jade. 19 20 After Chen Mu returns from the ruined temple expedition, he finds Granny Li's home ransacked and A-Ning missing, with her medicine and clothing left behind. 33

Although Chen Mu initially believes she was abducted by the Red Whale Gang or another enemy, later events reveal that Granny Li used ghost soldiers to repel the ruffians who attacked the residence. Granny Li then persuaded A-Ning to leave with her and Li Susu by claiming that she could locate A-Ning's missing family. 41 57 58

A-Ning traveled north with Granny Li and Li Susu alongside the Li Family Merchant Association's caravan, eventually reaching Luo Family Fort. There, she learned that Granny Li had concealed her identity as a cultivator of the Northern Mang Ghost Sect and had targeted her for her Innate Mysterious Yin Physique. 41 57 63

Granny Li later forcibly brought A-Ning into the Mystic Capital Dharma Hall and placed a Blood-Transforming Curse on her to compel Chen Mu to surrender inheritance treasures. Chen Mu used Li Susu as leverage to force Granny Li to remove the curse, then reunited with A-Ning and escaped the secret realm with her and Qin Tieya. 70 71

After returning to Everlasting Prosperity Town, A-Ning remains with Chen Mu at the Azure Dragon Martial Academy. Her health improves, and she grows close to Liu Qingluo while Chen Mu seeks a suitable cultivation method and a safer future for her. 90 104 106 109 Before leaving on a later expedition, Chen Mu arranges for a maid, Chuntang, to attend her. He also gives A-Ning an annotated copy of the Lunar Chain-Form Formula, which she begins practicing during his absence. 109 167

When Chen Mu returns, the threat of an imminent Sky Wolfer invasion leads to his assignment to seek reinforcements from Cloud Province. He asks A-Ning to marry him formally before he leaves, and she agrees despite sensing the danger behind his sudden proposal. Chen Mu arranges an evening wedding and plans to take her to Youzhou after the winter war to search for her family. 169 170

A-Ning is a frail, pale woman whose illness visibly diminishes an otherwise elegant beauty. 2

Personality

A-Ning is gentle, obedient, and deeply attached to Chen Mu. She readily accepts his arrangements, but becomes frightened whenever his actions suggest that he may leave or die. 2 6 10 19

Her devotion predates their life together: she endangered herself to save Chen Mu in the snow, and later remains certain that he would never betray her when Granny Li questions his character. 2 20

Though physically vulnerable and often self-critical for burdening him, she trusts Chen Mu completely and treasures the care he shows her. 20

A-Ning is also more resolute than her outward gentleness suggests. She rejects Granny Li's pressure to abandon Chen Mu for Ghost Sect cultivation, intends to reveal her true identity to him, and hopes to marry him properly after finding her family. 58 71 90

She remains compassionate even toward those who have endangered her. After Chen Mu captures Li Susu to force Granny Li to lift her curse, A-Ning pleads for Susu's release because Susu had treated her kindly during their journey. 70

Raised in an official's family and taught poetry and classics, A-Ning is perceptive enough to recognize Chen Mu's hurried wedding proposal as a possible farewell. She nevertheless accepts his decision, promises to wait for him, and gives him a Peace Buckle she embroidered herself. 169

Health

A-Ning suffers from a severe, lifelong yin-cold affliction connected to her Innate Mysterious Yin Physique. Hypothermia and exhaustion after rescuing Chen Mu greatly worsened the condition, causing severe weakness, recurring chills, fever, and difficulty leaving bed except during clear midday weather. 2 10 12 71
