Background / History

Liu Qingcang leads the Azure Dragon Martial Academy in Everlasting Prosperity Town. He responds personally when a suspected water-ghost calamity kills dockworkers, departing with disciples to investigate while prospective students, including Chen Mu, remain at the academy. 4

His pursuit of the evil cultivators behind the “water ghosts” leads him to Clear River Ghost Village. The supposed water ghosts are Refined Corpses created by evil cultivators, and the village is revealed to be an ambush designed to trap Liu Qingcang. His adopted son and seventh disciple, Liu Qi, is killed while attempting to return with a warning token. 22 23 24

At Ghost-Crying Forest, Liu Qingcang confronts the Rakshasa Gate despite its force of Corpse Kings, Silver Corpses, and a Golden-Scaled Corpse King. Although the public believes him to be only at Great Completion of the Meridian Opening realm, he reveals himself as an Innate expert and manifests True Blood in the form of a blood dragon. 28 29

The Rakshasa Gate Master exploits Liu Qingcang’s old injuries with the Blood-Baleful Formation, but Chen Mu destroys the formation’s banner in a surprise attack. Liu Qingcang breaks free, repels the Rakshasa Gate Master, and personally uses his true qi to stabilize Chen Mu after he is poisoned by yin-baleful energy. 30 31

In recognition of Chen Mu’s intervention, Liu Qingcang accepts him as his ninth personal disciple. He keeps the apprenticeship secret while Rakshasa Gate remains active, intending to announce it only after Chen Mu completes Body Tempering and cultivates inner qi. 32

Later, Liu Qingcang supports Chen Mu’s search for A-Ning, directs Qin Tieya to investigate the Red Whale Gang, and prepares the academy to patrol against the approaching Northern Barbarian threat. After Chen Mu uncovers a conspiracy at Yin Mountain Ferry, Liu Qingcang chooses to enter the enemy’s planned ambush on his own terms. 39 49

Appearance

Liu Qingcang is a middle-aged martial instructor with a square face, broad features, and frost-touched temples. He is first seen riding a jujube-red horse in a blue-cloth martial robe; later, he is described in green or black martial attire. 4 28 40

Personality

Liu Qingcang is composed under extreme pressure. Even while surrounded by the Rakshasa Gate’s corpse army and facing a Golden Corpse capable of halting his attacks, he remains deliberate, taunts the enemy’s formation, and waits for an opening rather than surrendering. 29 30

He is fiercely protective of his disciples and adopted family. Liu Qi’s murder turns his conflict with the Rakshasa Gate into a personal vendetta, while Liu Qingluo’s attempt to shield him causes him immediate concern despite his own peril. 29 30

As a master, Liu Qingcang is observant and pragmatic. He recognizes Chen Mu’s calculated humility when the latter declines a reward, accepts him as a personal disciple, and conceals the arrangement to keep him from becoming a target. He later counsels Chen Mu to abandon the fearful, overly cautious temperament formed by his lowborn upbringing. 32 40
