Background / History

Two years before the main conflict, Hibiki attended a Zwei Wing concert featuring Tsubasa Kazanari and Kanade Amou. The concert was attacked by Noise, leaving Hibiki hospitalized and Kanade severely injured and placed in a long-term coma 1 7. Hibiki later enrolled at Lydian Music Academy while remaining unaware that the concert’s events connected her to the Relics and the Second Division.

Hibiki first encountered Raye at the academy. Raye’s examination revealed that Hibiki contained Relic fragments, prompting her to recommend both physical and psychiatric examinations. Hibiki instinctively sensed that Raye was not truly malicious despite her threatening behavior and weaponry 1 2. Soon afterward, Hibiki’s Gungnir armor emerged from within her body during a Noise attack. Tsubasa rescued her and brought her to Second Division, where the organization identified her as an unprecedented human–Relic fusion case 3 4 6.

Second Division initially treated Hibiki as both a potential combatant and a security risk. Raye’s connection to the stolen Bronze Serpent Armor and Durandal made Hibiki a target, while the organization’s attempts to protect her forced Hibiki to confront the wider conflict 4 5 14. Her first major moral crisis came when armed humans attacked her. Hibiki could fight Noise without hesitation, but struggled to attack people who shared her humanity 14 32.

After Tsubasa was badly injured fighting Raye, Hibiki began intensive martial-arts training under Genjuro. Because she could not summon Gungnir’s spear, she developed a close-combat style based on fists, kicks, and Bajiquan techniques 40 43. She also continued trying to balance combat training with schoolwork and her friendship with Miku.

Hibiki was later captured by Raye after Raye used Miku as leverage. Raye held her as a research subject, studying the connection between Hibiki’s body and Gungnir while testing her against controlled Noise 59 89 90. Raye discovered that Hibiki’s body was gradually transforming into a Relic and created a Fusion Inhibitor to slow the process 91 95.

During the conflict surrounding Fine, Hibiki repeatedly fought alongside Chris and Tsubasa. Her ability to protect allies and absorb or combine with other powers became central to the group’s victories. She eventually confronted Maria, absorbed Maria’s Black Gungnir, and persuaded Maria to abandon her defense of Raye 154.

Hibiki’s fusion later became severe enough to threaten her life. Even after learning that continued combat could cause irreversible bodily collapse, she refused to abandon her goal of protecting others and reaching Raye 91 127 128. Raye eventually gained control over Hibiki’s thoughts and instincts, but Hibiki resisted through determination, pain, and the bonds she had formed with her friends 150 185.

After S.O.N.G.’s dissolution, Hibiki continued training with Miku and remained involved in efforts connected to Raye. She ultimately entered Raye’s mental space with the other Singers, choosing to confront Raye’s memories and trauma rather than simply defeat her 174 180 224.

Hibiki is a flaxen-haired schoolgirl whose ordinary appearance contrasts with the heavy armor and destructive power of her Symphogear. Her Gungnir armor has appeared in several forms, including yellow, orange-and-white, black-and-scarlet, and white-and-gold variations 3 35 127 154.

She is highly compassionate and has difficulty accepting violence between humans. This idealism repeatedly places her in danger, but it also allows her to reach people whom others treat only as enemies. Hibiki attempts to understand Raye, Chris, Maria, Kirika, and Shirabe even while fighting them 29 127 154.

Hibiki is also self-sacrificing to a fault. She routinely places duty above sleep, schoolwork, safety, and even her own lifespan. Ryouko and Genjuro warn that suppressing her emotions and forcing herself forward could trigger another destructive rampage 42 43.
