Background
The zombie virus reached Earth when a cross-dimensional battle between Crazy Dave and Dr. Zomboss tore open the battlefield and released a distorted torrent of energy. By the time humanity responded, zombies had spread through the streets, conventional weapons had failed, and surviving humans had retreated into Plant Garden-protected residential areas 1.
Ordinary Zombies form the most common body of these invading hordes. They advance through Plant Garden lanes toward human defenders, driven primarily by the instinct to consume brains 10 11.
Appearance
Ordinary Zombies are decayed humanoids with gray-green or gray-white skin and visibly deteriorated bodies.
- Rotting faces, cloudy or gray-white eyes, and indistinct throat gurgles 16 18.
- Arms commonly hang at their sides with half-curled fingers 16.
- Injuries expose blackened wounds, jagged bone, and dried dark fluid rather than stopping them immediately 18.
- Unlike armored variants, they have no head protection or specialized equipment 16.
Behavior
Ordinary Zombies are persistent but simple-minded. They march toward nearby humans and plants even under sustained fire, prioritizing access to a human brain over coordinated tactics 11 16.
They can alter their path when directly provoked or lured, though they usually do not expend effort thinking beyond their immediate hunger 11. In large groups, they press forward in dense formations behind stronger Zombie types 24 108.
Abilities & Skills
Brain-Seeking Pursuit
Ordinary Zombies identify humans as prey and advance toward them through available lanes.
- Will redirect toward a nearby human target when attracted or provoked 11.
- Continue advancing despite wounds that would incapacitate a living human, including severe arm damage 16 18.
- Their goal is to reach the defender's brain after breaching the garden's plant defenses 10 11.
Horde Pressure
Their principal threat comes from numbers rather than individual strength.
- Appear in groups alongside Roadblock, Conehead, Buckethead, and other specialized Zombies 21 24.
- Can crowd lanes and force defenders to divide firepower across multiple approaches 24 108.
- Are often used as the main mass of an attacking force while stronger Zombies exploit the pressure they create 97 108.
Combat Limitations
Ordinary Zombies lack the defenses of armored Zombie types and are vulnerable to focused plant attacks.
- Peashooter's enlarged peas can tear apart an arm and knock an ordinary Zombie off balance 16.
- Repeated Extreme Cold Peas slow them to a halt, freeze them solid, and allow a subsequent shot to kill them regardless of remaining health 88.
- Cattail's precise spikes can rapidly sink pool-crossing Zombies before they reach the plants 23 24.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Zombie Cataclysm
Zombies are the immediate result of the dimensional disaster that destroyed the former world order and made Plant Gardens humanity's primary defense 1.
Early Plant Garden Attacks
Ordinary Zombies participate in the first attacks on Lin Yue's backyard, testing his improvised defenses and newly planted combat units. A regular Zombie follows a destroyed rake into the yard and is met by Peashooter's enhanced firepower 15 16.
Huge Wave Beach
Ordinary Zombies continue to fill the ranks of the beach assaults, where they are slowed and frozen by Hypothermia Shooter, burned by Peashooter, and swept aside by the plants' combined defenses 88 108.
