Ch. 121Graveyard Upgrade (1)
Key plot points and events
- Blood Knight Akalusi withdraws from Colant’s body to avoid permanently harming his disciple. Colant is left weakened and distracted while drinking a healing potion.
- Hillsova, thought dead, revives enough to launch a surprise attack and kill Colant. Akalusi’s soul escapes Colant’s corpse and attacks Hillsova.
- Hillsova abandons his body and flees as a spirit. Akalusi pursues and repeatedly damages his soul, but Hillsova escapes into a building and hides in the sewers. Akalusi searches aboveground without finding him.
- Elsewhere, Green’s concealed cannon destroys a fragment of Martinez’s Split Soul. He collects the magic items and bodies of the two Assassins, Daisy and Lily, converting them in the Graveyard into Psychic Energy.
- The collected energy raises the Graveyard’s reserves to 6,500, enough to upgrade the Town Hall to level 3. The upgrade also improves the Clock Tower and, with it, Green’s Gelfis Meditation Method.
- Green’s mental power surges, causing severe headaches and forcing him to leave the Graveyard and sleep. He wakes after about five hours feeling recovered, more alert, and unusually sensitive to his surroundings.
Character developments and interactions
- Hillsova proves resourceful and determined: despite near death, he uses his last Psychic Energy for a surprise kill, then relies on cunning to evade Akalusi.
- Akalusi is powerful in spirit combat but loses Hillsova’s trail when Hillsova hides underground.
- Green turns his victory into a major advancement. The sudden growth in his mental power is painful, but the chapter suggests he has adapted to the upgrade.
- The conflict between Hillsova and Akalusi shifts from a physical fight to a desperate pursuit between spirits. Meanwhile, Green’s victory over Martinez’s fragment brings a separate strategic and personal gain.
Significant themes
- Survival through timing and ingenuity: Hillsova’s ambush and escape succeed because he exploits Akalusi’s transition and the environment.
- Power and its costs: Green’s upgrade strengthens his mind but initially overwhelms his body with pain.
- Growth through resources: The Graveyard converts defeated enemies and their possessions into the Psychic Energy that fuels Green’s progress.
- Vulnerability and persistence: Even powerful spirits can be weakened, while a nearly defeated opponent can endure through a final act of will.
