Background / History

Rayleigh served as the Pirate King Gol D. Roger’s right-hand man and vice-captain aboard the Oro Jackson. During the Roger Pirates’ voyage through the Grand Line, he investigated a mysterious pillar of light and found an infant floating in a basin. He swam out to rescue the child, killed a giant fish after it swallowed them both, and later adopted the boy as Silbaz-@@REF_ENTITY_17352575@@ after the infant chose a Log Pose over a gold coin. 1

After Roger returned from Laugh Tale and chose to surrender because of his terminal illness, the Roger Pirates disbanded. Rayleigh was devastated by Roger’s decision and refused to witness the execution directly, though he brought Mislanda to Loguetown at the boy’s request. 2

Following the disbandment, Rayleigh initially sought retirement and a quiet life raising Mislanda. He declined Monkey D. Dragon’s recruitment offer and refused to disclose Laugh Tale’s secret, honoring his promise to Roger; however, he directed Dragon toward the significance of the Poneglyphs. 5

Rayleigh settled on Ohara with Mislanda, trained him in combat and Haki, and agreed to protect Nico Robin at Professor Clover’s request. During the Buster Call, he intervened after Aokiji froze Mislanda, seriously wounding the vice admiral with a sword strike. He then defended the scholars, Robin, and his unconscious son against Aokiji, Akainu, and the Navy’s bombardment. 5 9 10

Cornered by the Buster Call fleet and Sengoku’s threat against the survivors, Rayleigh considered surrendering to protect Mislanda and Robin. Scopper Gaban and Dragon arrived before he could do so, forcing the Navy to withdraw. Rayleigh subsequently left Ohara with Mislanda and moved toward the Grand Line. 11 12

On an isolated island near the Calm Belt, Rayleigh trained Mislanda for four years and prepared him for independence. Mislanda mastered the basics of all three forms of Haki after one year, learned Conqueror’s Haki coating after two, and reached the level Rayleigh expected within three years. Rayleigh departed after a final sparring match, satisfied that his son could survive alone. 13 14

He later settled at the Sabaody Archipelago with Shakuyaku, learning ship coating as a hobby. He reunited with Mislanda, aided his search for Fisher Tiger, sheltered the Hancock sisters after their liberation, and repeatedly supported Mislanda against Marine pursuit. 16 17 25 30 32

Appearance

At Mislanda’s reunion with him after years apart, Rayleigh had noticeably grayer hair and additional wrinkles, though he remained energetic. 16

Personality

Rayleigh is protective, pragmatic, and deeply devoted to the people he considers family. His outrage at Aokiji freezing Mislanda reflects how completely he regards Mislanda as his son. 5 10
