Background / History

Rayleigh served as the Pirate King Gol D. Roger’s right-hand man and vice-captain aboard the Oro Jackson. During the Roger Pirates’ voyage through the Grand Line, he investigated a mysterious pillar of light and found an infant floating in a basin. He swam out to rescue the child, killed a giant fish after it swallowed them both, and later adopted the boy as Silbaz-Mislanda after the infant chose a Log Pose over a gold coin. 1

After Roger returned from Laugh Tale and chose to surrender because of his terminal illness, the Roger Pirates disbanded. Rayleigh was devastated by Roger’s decision and refused to witness the execution directly, though he brought Mislanda to Loguetown at the boy’s request. 2

Following the disbandment, Rayleigh initially sought retirement and a quiet life raising Mislanda. He declined Monkey D. Dragon’s recruitment offer and refused to disclose Laugh Tale’s secret, honoring his promise to Roger; however, he directed Dragon toward the significance of the Poneglyphs. 5

Rayleigh settled on Ohara with Mislanda, trained him in combat and Haki, and agreed to protect Nico Robin at Professor Clover’s request. During the Buster Call, he intervened after Aokiji froze Mislanda, seriously wounding the vice admiral with a sword strike. He then defended the scholars, Robin, and his unconscious son against Aokiji, Akainu, and the Navy’s bombardment. 5 9 10

Cornered by the Buster Call fleet and Sengoku’s threat against the survivors, Rayleigh considered surrendering to protect Mislanda and Robin. Scopper Gaban and Dragon arrived before he could do so, forcing the Navy to withdraw. Rayleigh subsequently left Ohara with Mislanda and moved toward the Grand Line. 11 12

On an isolated island near the Calm Belt, Rayleigh trained Mislanda for four years and prepared him for independence. Mislanda mastered the basics of all three forms of Haki after one year, learned Conqueror’s Haki coating after two, and reached the level Rayleigh expected within three years. Rayleigh departed after a final sparring match, satisfied that his son could survive alone. 13 14

He later settled at the Sabaody Archipelago with Shakuyaku, learning ship coating as a hobby. He reunited with Mislanda, aided his search for Fisher Tiger, sheltered the Hancock sisters after their liberation, and repeatedly supported Mislanda against Marine pursuit. 16 17 25 30 32

Mislanda’s subsequent actions repeatedly disrupted Rayleigh’s retirement. The assault on the Celestial Dragons’ slave prison drew Garp to Sabaody, while Mislanda’s later capture of Celestial Dragons again made Rayleigh fear Marine retaliation. Although Mislanda invited him to retire at the Dark Night Pirates’ stronghold, Rayleigh preferred his life on Sabaody and remained wary of becoming involved in further disputes. 30 65 108 148

Rayleigh nevertheless continued to follow Mislanda’s progress. He expressed concern about Mislanda’s plan to fight the Marines, but after watching him escape a confrontation with Kuzan and Tsuru, he trusted him to pursue his own path. During the years of the Dark Night Pirates’ rise, Rayleigh lived chiefly on Sabaody, working as a coater and opposing human trafficking; he generally visited the pirates once a year for his granddaughter Elizabeth’s birthday. After the Marines’ defeat at Evernight Island, he visited the imprisoned Sengoku, bringing rum for a conversation between former rivals. 70 211 249

When news spread that Mislanda had obtained an Eternal Pose to Laugh Tale, Rayleigh was shocked: he had seen Roger throw that same Pose into the sea. Although Shakky welcomed Mislanda’s apparent approach to becoming Pirate King, Rayleigh felt that reaching the title by this shortcut was too casual. 283

Rayleigh and Shakky later visited the Dark Night Pirates, where Mislanda secretly drugged Rayleigh’s wine and, with Ain’s assistance, incapacitated him. Mislanda arranged for both Rayleigh and Shakky to regain younger bodies and sought to keep Rayleigh near the pirates. Upon waking beside the rejuvenated Shakky, Rayleigh believed he was dreaming and confessed that, although he would still have joined Roger, he regretted not taking her with him. He agreed that he would marry her. Mislanda revealed that the conversation had been real, and Rayleigh and Shakky married two days later. 298 299

Six months later, Rayleigh administered the Conqueror’s Haki screening for the Dark Night Pirates’ combat tournament, eliminating roughly ninety percent of its several thousand entrants. He subsequently fought alongside the pirates against the Three Bastards Alliance, gaining the advantage over the aging Golden Lion Shiki. In the final battle against the World Government, Rayleigh defeated his longtime rival Garp and then the exhausted Fujitora. 299 302 304 311

Appearance

At Mislanda’s reunion with him after years apart, Rayleigh had noticeably grayer hair and additional wrinkles, though he remained energetic. 16

Mislanda later arranged for Rayleigh to be restored to a body more than thirty years younger. His renewed youth gave him a significant advantage in his later fight with the aging Shiki. 299 304

Personality

Rayleigh is protective, pragmatic, and deeply devoted to the people he considers family. Although he initially wants to retire after Roger’s death, he repeatedly abandons safety and comfort to defend Mislanda, Robin, and the Ohara scholars. His outrage at Aokiji freezing Mislanda reflects how completely he regards Mislanda as his son. 5 10

He carries lasting grief over Roger’s execution and remains bound by his promise not to reveal Laugh Tale’s secret. Even so, he is willing to offer limited guidance to Dragon regarding the Poneglyphs and the Void Century. 2 5

As a mentor, Rayleigh stresses discipline over reliance on natural gifts. He repeatedly warns Mislanda that Devil Fruit elementalization is not invincible and that Haki is essential against powerful opponents. 5 6

Rayleigh values an independent, quiet life and often worries that Mislanda’s provocations will bring the Marines to his door. His reluctance to join the Dark Night Pirates does not prevent him from advising Mislanda or fighting beside him when necessary. He is less forthcoming about his feelings for Shakky. When he believed he was dreaming, however, he admitted his regret over leaving her behind and said that he would have taken her with him aboard Roger’s ship. 299
